Transcendentalism was a philosophy with a strong effect on the literature of the 1830's and 1840's. Transcendentalism advocated views involving isolation from society and connection to nature. However, transcendentalist writers such as Emerson and Thoreau were not the first to utilize these ideas. Thomas Paine, a well known Revolutionary hero, is an origin of transcendentalist ideals. While his views were not exactly those of the modern transcendentalists, Thomas Paine generated very similar ideas in order to advance his revolutionary ideas. This new style of writing was an integral part of the reason for his writing's popularity and success, reserving him a place in American history. Thomas Paine utilized early elements of transcendentalism in order to express his belief and support of both human and societal rights.
Thomas Paine started life as a common man, but became a distinguished writer and devoted patriot. The son of a corset maker, Paine was more influenced by his father's religion than his work. His father's religious influence in combination with his study of science caused him to dislike Government based on hereditary privilege. Eventually, Paine immigrated to Philadelphia, gained more schooling, and became very acquainted with several advocates of political change (Foner 1). Paine's success had two origins. The first, and most well known, was his sympathy with the American plight. Paine disliked monarchy as did many other Americans. Secondly, his transcendentalist style of writing caused his writings to be quite unique making them all the more interesting to his readers. Thomas Paine was not the perfect example of transcendentalism. However, this is because he came nearly 50 years before the movement and was most likely a very large influence on its origin. He still used the finer elements to create well reasoned moral, ethical, and realistic arguments for liberty and revolution which benefited society and individuals. These views themselves are transcendentalist in nature. Thomas Paine's work went on to inspire men throughout the revolution, causing him to be cited as one of the main influences on liberty throughout time.
I believed Paine had an advantage by not being born in the colonies. This was because he had witness the oppressive nature of the crown in Britain and wanted nothing to do with it, except to overthrow it. Paine was rooted as an advocated for the British colonies' cost.
By the age of twelve, Thomas Paine had flunked out of school. Then in the year 1768, Thomas Paine became a tax officer, and in the same year, he met Benjamin Franklin by coincidence and Benjamin Franklin Helped Thomas Pain move to Philadelphia. After moving to America Thomas Paine’s career started off. In 1776 he published his first work Common Sense and after that was released. “He traveled with the Conti nental Army and wasn’t a success as a soldier, but he produced The American Crisis (1776-83) which helped inspire the Army.” (Independence Hall Association 1995). Emerson is known as the father of Transcendentalism because he was the founder of the movement. His writings appealed to both intellectuals and the general public even if his new ideas were hard for most of society to understand. Emerson’s entire life journey was transcendental. He was constantly thinking outside of society’s norms. Emerson once said “Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist” (Emerson). Emerson means that to be a real man you cannot conform to what society wants you to be. Society tends to want everyone to think the same way and do what they are told to do. A man cannot go around following others and not thinking for himself.
First off, one of the defining differences between the transcendentalist life and the life lived today are feelings towards self-reliance. Transcendentalists strongly believed that all people are unique and have the power to accomplish anything. Walden by Thoreau is a great example of this value. According to Walden, “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived’ (Thoreau #). Thomas Paine was one of the great supporters of the American Revolution. He was a journalist and used his pen and paper to urge the public to break free from Great Brittan. He wrote anonymously, yet addressed the public as he spoke out about his beliefs. The first pamphlet he published, influencing independence from Brittan, was called Common Sense

Thomas Paine was a great man. He created a pamphlet called Common Sense that had an impact on many colonist minds and many others. Though he didn’t have a religion, but he did believe in God. Even though he believed in God he didn’t go to church. Paine passed away on June 8th, 1809 . His death was negative when he went to get reburied. Thomas’s remains were lost at sea when they went to rebury him.
Thomas Paine was an activist for many causes throughout his lifetime including the abolition of slavery, government rule by democracy rather than a monarchy, and in later years about what he believed were falsehoods in the Bible. He was an advocate for freedom of the people and his writings were often controversial. He believed in democracy and leaned toward rule by the common man. After becoming a friend of Benjamin Franklin, he traveled to the colonies. While in the colonies his writings on the American Revolution caused him to become an enemy of the British Government. When he returned to Great Britain his writings as a proponent for the French Revolution caused him to have to flee to France to avoid arrest. His political stance in France eventually caused him to be imprisoned and he eventually had to flee again to the United States to escape long-term imprisonment. He traveled quite a bit and was able to see firsthand the American Revolution and the French Revolution. Thomas Paine was a gifted writer, and he was very devoted to his causes. He is extremely famous for his pamphlet Common Sense which he wrote about what he felt was the necessity for American independence and later had an input into the Constitution of the United States of America. There were a number of gifted male writers during this timeframe who wrote about the same issues, including Edmund Burke, so even though he was a revolutionary writer, he was not unique.

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote it and Henry David Thoreau lived it. Transcendentalism was a religious and philosophical movement developed approximately in the 1820s and 1830s. It began in the northeastern part of the United States. According to Paul Reuben, the movement began as a protest against spirituality and the intellectualism brought from England to the United States (Reuben). The movement’s core beliefs can be inferred in a single line, infixed good found in nature and people. They fought against the only two big institutions that influenced society in that time, the government and religion; which were said to pervert individuals.
Thomas Paine is undoubtedly one of the most prolific founding fathers of the United States, albeit not in the manner most would expect from a founding father. Paine was not a drafter of the constitution, nor was he an early member of Congress or President of the United States. However, Paine did have a profound impact on society, not only in America, but also abroad. Often remembered for helping spur the American Revolution, yet not as often remembered for the other revolution in France. Two of the more famous writings from Paine are, of course, Common Sense and The Rights of Man, both of which were written during revolutionary times in separate countries. It goes without saying that when a revolution is taking place there will be many on both sides of the war; in both of these instances, Paine was the voice of the people and stood up for what was right regardless of the consequences. I posit Thomas Paine was the most influential man for revolution in America and France despite fear of backlash or imprisonment. In fact, near the end of his life Paine was not only imprisoned, but somehow evaded being beheaded as well. Thomas Paine was even more influential as a result of his extreme lack of self-interest and ability to stay true to the cause of his writings rather than wither away in fear.

Transcendentalist were hard to define, but perhaps one of the fathers of transcendentalism Ralph Waldo Emerson defines it most gracefully in a speech he gave, “The Transcendentalist adopts the whole connection of spiritual doctrine, He believes in miracle, in the perpetual openness of the human mind to new influx of light and power: he believes in inspiration, and in ecstasy”. The age of Transcendentalism was an American movement brought upon by philosophers and writers in the 19th century that focused on the inner spiritual and mental essence of the human than the physical (). Ralph Waldo Emerson served as a prominent figure in the age of Transcendentalism, and left his mark on American literature by leading the transcendental movement, and influencing other memorable writers of his time, as well as writers after his death. Emerson’s themes and style of writing is a product of his upbringing, and his time and interactions with the members of the Transcendentalist Club.
The first ideas of Transcendentalism were formally introduced in the Nineteenth-Century by becoming an intellectual movement that brought forth new ideas, theories, and ways of thinking to society. These transcendentalist ideas were created by people known as "transcendentalists". Some of the more well known transcendentalists are Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau who created new styles of literature, essays, novels, philosophy, poetry, and other forms of writing that were much different from the current ideas that society was accustomed to. Transcendentalism is one of the most influential movements in ideological and literary fields in American history. It emphasizes the spirit of the universe, which means it admits the existence of the "oversoul." This shows a new view of nature for people; the formation of this idea especially caused people to focus on their "personal"-individual life. Transcendentalism has religious origins and was influenced by romanticism, it tells people to be self reliant, to have self esteem, and to strive to rely on their own strength to ascend and improve their spiritual realm. Also, it liberates humanity to a great extent and improves the status of people, making people's freedom possible and it has a strong critical spirit and to build a society with
