Media has a huge impact on the shaping of the world. For centuries, in all parts of the world, media has been the main source of transporting news and great use for public out cries. Media has helped shaped the modern world since the 1400’s until today. The media comes in many different sources from books, to radio, to television. I will focus on the effectiveness the media has on the world throughout history in religious, political and social context.
The first printing press was invented by Johannes Gutenberg in 1436. Johannes Gutenberg was a goldsmith and businessman from a small town Mainz in southern Germany. This printing press had adjustable wooden or metal letters and was called the Gutenberg press. It wasn’t completely finished until 1440. This press helped the production of books but it also helped with communication with the sciences, arts and religion departments through text. The Gutenberg Bible was the first book to be printed from this printing press in 1452.
In 1517, Western Europe there was controversies in religion between Catholics and the Protestants. Martin Luther was a Christian theologian and Augustinian monk who inspired the Protestant Reformation with his teaching. He had intolerance for the Roman Catholic Church’s corruption of Halloween during this period. He used the printing press to create the 95 Theses of Contention to the Wittenberg Church. He believed in finding peace with God and prayer for others souls. The 95 Theses of Contention challenged the views of religion within the Roman Catholic Church. It mentions the nature of the Catholic’s amends for wrong, it questioned the authority of the pope and the convenience of gratification. He eliminated some practices of the Catholic Church by onl...

To begin, Johannes Gutenberg was born 1395, in Mainz, Germany. He started experimenting with printing by 1438. He obtained backing in 1450 from the financier Johann Fust, whose impatience and other factors led to Gutenberg's loss of his establishment to Fust in 1455. Gutenberg's masterpiece, and the first book ever printed from movable type, is the “Forty-Two-Line” Bible, completed no later than 1455" (http://www.biography.com)". The first most important consequence of the printing press is that it chang...
During the early 1900’s and late 1800’s precipitated the first true form of American media. The daily newspapers have been a part of the United States for some time, but during 1880’s and 1890’s reports such as Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst began to transform the newspaper in order for it to become the first major stepping stone in mass media. These publishers, especially Hearst, took advantage of the American involvement in foreign affairs. Hearst convinced his audience that sinking of a U.S ship during the Spanish-American War obliged a military response. Although Hearst was not the initial cause of the war, there was proof that he had the power to distort information, images and options. By World War 1, the media involvement increase by a tremendous amount.
Society is greatly influenced by the media as it holds great power and it is dominant in western society and culture. We see many different forms of media everyday and it can easily impact the way we view things without us even realising.
Johannes Gutenberg created the printing press in the year 1452. Four other technologies that were more or less common to different parts of the world, made the printing press possible. The first technology was a wine/olive in the screw-press, which areas of Asia and Europe used to obtain oils and create wines. The second invention was block-print technology that Marco Polo originally brought to Europe. A third technology is oil-based ink that was invented in the eleven hundreds. Since this ink smears on vellum, printing did not use this ink. Vellum was costly, but durable so books that took awhile to make utilized this material. Finally, the fourth material was paper, which many process make different forms of all over the globe (Bantwal). Gutenberg used these old technologies ...
Johann Gutenberg, the 1400s printing press inventor contributed his invention to the spread of Renaissance. The printing press was invented in 1455 in Mainz, Germany by Mr. Gutenberg, Johann. "It combined movable pieces of metal type that could be reused; with a press that could produce sharp impressions on paper that could be redone over and over again; movable type was arranged over a flat wooden plate called the lower platen; ink was applied to the type and the sheet of paper was laid on top; an upper platen was brought down to meet the lower platen; and the two plates pressed the paper and type together creating sharp images in the paper." Gutenberg’s machine printed two-hundred- fifty sheets per hour. Modern day offset printing prints about 70,000 sheets per hour.
It has been said that the media is a bad influence on society. This is true in some cases, but we have to also add this to the statement; society also influences the media by what it chooses to promote or watch. Media is a very important part of society today. Even with its adverse effects, we could not live without it.
‘One of the first and most important assumptions of the study of mass communication has been the presumption that media and their content have significant and substantial effects’ (Perse, E.M. 2001: 3). The topical debate and concerns of ‘media effects’ has had a long history. ‘Mass communication could become the basis for people’s view of the world’ (Lippman, 1922)4. This quote demonstrates that in the early 1900s scholars were concerned with media’s dominant ability to influence audiences. As new mediums have come into play, opinions on the matter have rarely changed. ‘Media effects’ refers to how powerful and influential the mass media is upon audiences in society and how this affects individuals patterns of thought and behaviour.
Power of the media can transform the whole society especially in developing countries, it can be used as a 'weapon of mass destruction’. But the most important use of media is to educate the people about the basic human rights.Education and discipline is key to progress. This is the difference between a nation and a crowd. Media men have access to people/ society and they have an audience. Their programs have an impact and people listen to them.
In my life, I have only witnessed first hand, the effects of media and its development since about 1995, as this is the earliest I can remember. However, my huge interest in the subject has lead me to broaden my knowledge over the way media had developed in the 1980's and even earlier. I believe that what I have witnesses is in fact the most important time period in the media development timeline so far.
The printing press is a system invented by the goldsmith Johann Gutenberg in the 15th century. This invention introduced movable print first to Europe and then to the rest of the world and thus was a very important creation. The printing press is often regarded as one of the most influencial events in our time. This is due to the fact that it spread rapidly and had a great effect on all the world especially in Europe.
These tools, or medium, have evolved over time. The first tool that accomplished this job was known as the Gutenberg Printing Press created around 1450 by Johann Gutenberg. The creation of the first movable printing press allowed books to be created and duplicated quickly. Historyguide.org dives in further, “It made information available to a much larger segment of the population who were, of course, eager for information of any variety.” Information was spreading quickly and as the act of reading started to develop into a necessity instead of a luxury, allowing another medium for mass communication to emerge.
Media is considered as "mirror" of the modern society, it is the media which shapes our lives. The purpose of the media is to inform people about current, new affairs and to tell about the latest gossip and fashion. It tells about the people who are geographically divided. The role of media has become one way of trading and marketing of products and prejudices. The media claimed to be governed by righteousness and equity, but greed and self-aggrandizement has poisoned its virtues. Media is in charge of: 1.Information, 2.Education, 3.Entertainment, 4.Advertising
Hence, the power of media has touched its apex in today’s age. Its societal, political and economic functions reflect its unparallel capacity to affect the human life in all spheres.
Media is everywhere. Spending a whole day purposefully avoiding media in todays tech savvy, media saturated world is difficult. Phones that have connection to the Internet, Television, radio, books, movies, billboards are all ways the media communicates with us. To avoid media is almost impossible it seemed. Without interacting with the media it is easy to notice what hold it plays in daily life. This task may not have been an easy one, but it was a very eye-opening adventure. By removing media it became clear as to why we actually use media, and how those uses can be affected. A day without media shocking was very informative.
Media technologies are becoming an important aspect of today’s society. Each and every day, people interact with media of many different forms. Media is commonly defined as being a channel of communication. Radio, newspapers, and television are all examples of media. It is impossible to assume that media is made up of completely unbiased information and that the media companies do not impose their own control upon the information being supplied to media users. Since many people use media very frequently, it is obvious to assume that it has affects on people. According to the text book Media Now, "media effects are changes in knowledge, attitude, or behavior that result from exposure to the mass media," (386). This leaves us with many unanswered questions about media and its influences. This paper will look at how the effects of media are determined and explore the main affects on today’s society - violence, prejudice, and sexual behavior.
