Long overlooked and ignored, the second amendment has become much study and caused many debates. This was when influential people began to think it was a good idea to disarm the civilian population. Confusion and some serious mistakes began to appeal in the twentieth century. This amendment created an obstacle and created many court trials due to the lack of knowledge of the provision of the Constitution. The second amendment is unclear to many people and perhaps the most misled amendment. The second amendment is the most debatable amendment. James Madison argued that there needs to be no concern about forming a federal government because state militias would protect the people from any threat. Madison suggested in 1789 that specific rights of citizens be spelled out in the Bill of Rights (Glantz 2360). Ratified on December 15,1791, the Bill of Rights included the Second Amendment to the Constitution that reads in this order, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” (Madison 2360). Opponents of existing and proposed laws, including the NRA, Gun Owners of America, and the Second Amendment Foundation, routinely argue that the Second Amendment to the Constitution grants unrestricted right to individuals to “keep and bear arms” (Vernick 1773). In another group, they believe that only the military should have the right to keep and bear arms. Many people have many misinterpretations about gun control. Gun control issues are still occurring in today’s society due to misusing firearms and weapons. People aren’t just using them as self-defense, but as a weapon to themselves and others. Because of the way the amendment is phrased has caused much debate and misinterpretations. This issue has been one of the longest problems and still continues to be unresolved today. No matter what happens, there’s still going to be issues concerning gun control. Individuals will still posses weapons in their homes and use them as self-defense, but also as a weapon toward each other. Also, people who aren’t suppose to own weapons, like felons, will still continue to do so. No matter how the amendment is worded it will still continue to be trouble in the generations to come. Gun control is a big issue in today’s society and has been from generations.
