The Technology of Industrialization (U.S. Economic History)
We already knew the men who guide the process of industrialization in U.S. economic history, but we need to explore and examine the truth of technology of industrialization in American history such as the entire iron and steel industry. The industrialization applied to the social and economic changes that mark the transition from a stable agricultural and commercial society to a modern industrial society because of using complex machinery rather than tools. Industrialization effected changes in some parts such as economic, political, and social organization. These effects increased international trade; political changes because of the shift in economic power; sweeping social changes that included the rise of working-class movements, the development of managerial hierarchies to manage the division of labor; and the emergence of new patterns of authority and corporation.
The Second Industrial Revolution developed within the chemical, electrical, petroleum, and steel industries from 1871 to 1914. ¡§The second phase of the industrial revolution was about the internal combustion engine and electrical motors and generators.¡¨ (http://www.answers.com) The second industrial revolution is also named the second phase of the Industrial Revolution, from this period, you can see the growth of railways and steam ships from the investor such as Bessemer and Siemens. Bessemer invented the process of steel making in the decades preceding 1871.
Technological changes included the use of iron and steel, new energy sources began in England in the 18th century. For the age of industrialization that machinery requires steel. ¡§The invention of machinery brought some benefits such as increased production (including the steam engine and the spinning jenny), the development of the factory system, and important developments in transportation and communication (including the railroad and the telegraph)¡¨(http://www.answers.com). In other words, the technology of industrialization brought more benefits but also increased economic growth.
In medieval Europe, the steel swords were treasures to be handed down from father to son. Moreover, the cost of converting iron into steel was expensive, so it could not be made in large quantities. There is one guy whose name was Henry Bessemer. He invented cheap steel and that was the beginning of new steel technology. The machines performed the operations before and after the conversion into steel. Mechanization became the most important thing at that time. Bessemer kept revolutionize the making of steel. When the cost of steel fell, steel became the basic building material of other industries. Because of Bessemer reduced the cost of making steel, so the railroad executives can replace their iron rails with steel.
Throughout the 19th century, industrialization was a turning point in the United States that led to huge changes in society, economics and politics. The incoming growth of factories had positive and negative effects. Two specific changes were the new government regulations and the increasing immigration. These changes were extremely important because they settled the bases of the country. Industrialization provided many benefits for the nation but however, it also created serious problems that required action by the government.

Many new advancements in textiles and transportation, took place during the late 18th and 19th century. This time period was called the Industrial Revolution, it was the expeditious development of industry. It was brought on by the establishments of machinery. As a result, the inventions shaped the economy and it helped civilization reach further into technology. The Industrial Revolution started in Britain because of its resources and geography.

The Second Industrial Revolution took place between 1870 and 1914, beginning as Ulysses S. Grant entered the presidential office and coming to a close in Woodrow Wilson’s first term. The factory system was the key to the industrial revolution. The factory system was a combination of Humans and new technology. New technology was arriving every day. The greatest invention during this time was the steam engine. The creation of the steam engine was credited to James Watt. There had been other steam engines before James Watt’s but none of them were efficient. Watt’s engine was the first efficient engine that could be used in a factory. The steam engine had the strength of ten thousand men.(Pollard) This was not the only invention that helped the factory system evolve. Textiles were a major product of the Industrial Revolution. Production was slow at first in the factory. In 1764, a British inventor named James Hargraves invented the “Spinning Jenny.” This lowered production time which enabled the factory to produce more per day. In 1773, John Kay, an English inventor, created the “flying shuttle” which lowered the production time even more.(Encarta) If production had not been speed up, the Industrial Revolution would have not had that big of effect as it did in North America.
The Industrial Revolution was the major advancement of technology in the late 18th and early 19th century that began in Britain and spread to America. The national and federal government helped the United States grow into a self reliant nation with improvements in transportation, technology, manufacturing and the growth of the population. Americans had an economy based on manual labour, which was replaced by one dominated by industry and the manufacture of machinery. It began with the expansion of the textile industries and the development of iron-making techniques, and trade expansion was enabled by the introduction of canals, improved roads and railways. One of the first to kick off, was the textile industry.

Industrialization was a period of rapid expansion in the 19th and 20th century for the United States and had a profound effect on the country. Although there was much success across the country, such as massive population growth and manual labor becoming easier, the negative effects of industrialization outweigh the positives.
The first Industrial Revolution evolved into the Second Industrial Revolution in the transition years. Second Industrial Revolutions begins in 1850 when technological and economic progress continued with the increasing espousal of steam-powered boats, ships and railways and the construction of machine tools.
Industrialization in the 19th century changed our nation. We became a modern, faster paced society with modern technologies. Women joined the work force and helped develop our nation. Cities grew and developed, leading to advanced transportation and high rise skyscrapers. Even farmers began to feel the improvement of the nation's economy. Industrialization had spread across the USA.
Advancements in new technology clearly promoted the industrial growth of the United States. The new technologies allowed business owners to reduce labor in the movement of materials from one point to the other. This occurred by using the new technology of railroads and machinery. Business owners used the railroads to transport their finished product and raw materials around the country more efficiently, which enabled businesses to expand. The business owners were now able to use machines for lifting materials from one floor to another and to use conveyer belts to move materials around on an assembly line. The use of machines is evident because the graph in document 5 clearly shows that American industrial and agricultural power sources between 1850 and 1900 changed. This is evident because in 1850, only 13% human power and 35% water and coal power was used, but in 1900 a mere 5% human power and a whopping 73% water and coal power was used. In conclusion, the industrial revolution brought many changes to Britain. The changes included the textile industry, the steam powered engines, which helped create steam-powered locomotives and steam boats. Because of this major improvement in the industrial revolution railroads began to sprout and was a more efficient way to transport goods and people across Britain. The Industrial Revolution no doubt brought rapid changes to people’s lives in Britain.
Throughout the Industrial Revolution in 1780 there were many positive and negative effects that resulted during this time including technologies were improving, machinery that was making travel, luxuries and comfort better, and poor working/ living conditions. The industrial revolution began in Europe in the 18th century. The revolution prompted significant changes, such as technological improvements in global trade, which led to a sustained increase in development between the 18th and 19th century. These improvements included mastering the art of harnessing energy from abundant carbon-based natural resources such as coal. The revolution was economically motivated and gave rise to innovations in the manufacturing industry that permanently transformed human life. It altered perceptions of productivity and understandings of mass production which allowed specialization and provided industries with economies of scale. The iron industry in particular became a major source of economic growth for the United States during this period, providing much needed employment, which allowed an abundant population of white people as well as minorities to contribute and benefit from the flourishing economy. Steel production boomed in the U.S. in the mid 1900s. The U.S. became a global economic giant due to the size of its steel industry, taking advantage of earlier innovations such as the steam engine and the locomotive railroad. The U.S. was responsible for 65 percent of steel production worldwide by the end of the 2nd World War (Reutter 1). In Sparrows Point: Making Steel: the Rise and Ruin of American Industrial Might, Mark Reutter reports that “Four out of every five manufacturing items contained steel and 40 percent of all wage earners owed their livelihood directly or indirectly to the industry.” This steel industry was the central employer during this era.
