Technology in the Mathematics Classroom
While reading the NCTM summary on Technology, it is to my
understanding that use of technology is at the teacher’s discretion.
Therefore, the teacher is charged with the responsibility of preparing
students before venturing into the field of technology. Essentially,
students should be able to grasp and understand basic concepts and
ideas, before intertwining computers or calculators into a lesson to
further explore the concepts in said lesson.
When visiting the U.S. Department of Education’s National
Education Technology Plan website, I did not find any information on
how technology should or could be integrated with mathematics. Their
entire site was devoted to integrating technology but simply left an
open forum for ideas. Now the ideas submitted by teachers were
interesting, however, the matter still remains on whether a teacher
feels that their students are prepared and receptive to integrate
technology with a lesson or idea. I believe a teacher would be less

Technology plays a very important role in today’s society. Everyone has a smart phone and we crave the latest and greatest televisions, computers, cell phones and tablets. Some of these include iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, Samsung Smart TVs, Samsung Smart watches and the new Google Glass. More and more schools are using technology in their teaching methods including our own one-to-one program at Oxon Hill High School where each student received a Samsung Google Chromebook. Technology should be used in school’s curriculum and instruction because of improved communication, innovations to come and convenience to both the students and the teachers.
Technology is a portion of everyday life. It affects how business is conducted, teaching, learning, and receiving information. Good or bad, everyone uses technology every day. There are many items people have on them on a daily basis, one would be hard pressed to be without. If you were to examine the effect of technology on teaching and learning and acquire an understanding of why technology should be a part of every classroom curriculum, what would the conclusion be? Technology is a great benefit to the classroom, it stimulates our digital generation and allows educators to be more creative with curriculum.
The article discusses a study done in 2013. The study consisted of five different schools in Chile where teachers were using Khan Academy. Four of the five schools were chosen from a non-profit network of schools that provide education to students from low-income families. These families pay approximately $25 a month to send their children to this school. The fifth school was a public school in Chile. The researchers wanted to know how Khan Academy was blending with classroom practices of teachers. So, the researchers interviewed teachers on their use of Khan Academy and their reflections on the website. The study was based on a theory by Vygotsky who believed that tools play an important role in the process of learning and interacting with others. In the study, Khan Academy was the tool being integrated with the established classroom environment. Researchers interviewed eight mathematics teachers to see how they were integrating Khan Academy into the mathematics classroom. According to the teachers, they carefully thought about whether or not Khan Academy was appropriate to use in the classroom. It has been the goal of educators to integrate technology in all levels of learning. Educators believe that if this goal is properly implemented and supported, it may bring about a positive experience for both teachers and students (Ertmer & Leftwich, 2009; Simon, 2002). In their research, Cradler and Bridgforth (2005) concluded that technology applications can support higher-order thinking by engaging students in authentic, complex tasks within collaborative learning contexts. On average, students who used computer-based instruction scored at 64th percentile on tests of achievement compared to students in the control conditions without computers who scored in the 50th percentile (Motamedi, 2010). Beside the classroom benefits, it is also clear that as the society moves further to 21st century, human beings are increasingly becoming more dependent on technology. Despite these realities, research shows that it is only relatively few teachers who feel well prepared to integrate education technology into classroom instruction (Ertmer & Leftwich, 2009; Franklin, 2011; NCES 2010,). According to NCES (2010), despite teachers having access to computers and internet, the teachers used technology only in 40 percent or sometimes 29 percent of their instruction time. The NCES further reports that only less than half of the U.S. elementary teachers felt comfortable to use technology for classroom instruction.
Within technology comes the gateway to almost everything that is out in the internet, it opens a whole new world to the students and the teachers that use them. The outcome of the uses, if they happen to be good or bad, come from the restrictions and the management of usage of said technology inside a classroom. Educators see firsthand how the used in their daily lives influence how a student learns. Thanks to technology not only has students and teachers changed the ways they learn and teach, learning itself has changed as well. It is not only crucial to have the technological tools needed in a classroom, but also an educator that can mend and mold the technology to their rightful use. The use of technology in a classroom not only expands the tools and gadgets, not to mention adds much needed knowledge that will help students later on in life, but also brings a whole new and better way to teach and learn.
Almost everyone attends a school at one time in their life whether the classroom includes technology or not. Research shows that technology isn’t used as often as one might think. The article, “High Access and Low use of technology in High School Classrooms” illustrates the use of technology by stating that only one in ten of elementary and middle school teachers are daily users of computers (Cuban, Kirkpatrick, Peck). Most schools now have classrooms that use technology throughout the entire class time and even at home to do homework. Although some people might agree with the use of technology in class, it is more harmful to the students than useful. It can cause many distractions, it can be difficult to use and can take away from learning time.
Technology is becoming more and more dominant in our society.Everyday upgrades are being made and new innovations are being discovered. Technology is all around us whether we want it to be or not: it is the vehicles we drive, it can be found in our homes, and can even be found in the grocery store.Every place we look there is some type of technology.I believe technology has had a major impact on our school systems and is still impacting it today.There are those who do not agree, though, that technology has impacted our schools.Eric Gormly writes, “In fact, many theorists point out the overall impact of technology on education has been quite small, manifesting little discernible change in the classroom.” [1]Yes, there are some schools that are not as advanced as others, but many of them do have a significant amount of technology in them.I find it fascinating that so much technology has been incorporated into our classrooms, but I believe that, even with all of the positive aspects that are associated with technology, there are some negative and even dangerous aspects that should be taken into account.I will be sharing some of the equipment that has been used in the schools, how both the students and the teachers use the equipment, and also the positive and negative effects that technology has had on our schools.
There are several good reasons everyone argues that more and/or better technology be incorporated into our schools, but do they ever consider the arguments of why too much technology in school has a negative impact? They should be if not, i will present them today. Some factors schools should consider when it comes to technology is internet safety, teacher training,budget,distraction and overall the effect it has on younger generations mind.
Not many people would argue that computer technology is bad for the K-12 classroom. There is, however, a serious and thought-provoking debate going on regarding computer technology in the classroom. At issue is to what extent and at what age should computers be integrated in American classrooms. There is no question that a certain level of technology will bring improvements in academic achievement. In one study on children of low socioeconomic status a definite improvement was seen. It was noted that, “Increasing the technology available to students encourages, facilitates, and supports student achievement – at the elementary level, the most profound effects were found in the area of mathematics” (Page 391). Page also states that, “numerous studies have demonstrated that young children’s self-esteem or self-concept directly affects their academic performance” (Page 391).
? Calculators and computers are reshaping the mathematical landscape, and school mathematics should reflect those changes? (NCTM 24). My view of mathematics and geometry is that they go hand in hand. You have to know some algebraic procedures in order to be able to perform geometry problems.
Ever since the integration of educational technology there has been a dramatic shift in most of the paradigms on which traditional learning exists. The concept of incorporating technology with education is one that has gained widespread attention. Effective use of educational technology is critical to solving numerous educational challenges. Educational technology can help us meet the needs of a diverse learner population and better prepare our students for lifelong learning.

Developing the Mathematics Curriculum: Using ICT Choosing a project Through discussion with my mentor, it was preliminary decided that my ICT project will be on something to do with shapes. I then went away and came back with some more specific ideas. These were: * An introduction to geometrical properties of quadrilaterals * An introduction to geometrical properties of triangles * Reflection and Rotation * Angles Once I had my ideas, I asked the teachers in the department what they would prefer the resource to be. Most thought that reflection and rotation was easier to teach than the others, and that more resources were available to them for that area of mathematics.
