Technology In Education
As the world heads into the twenty-first century, innovative types of technology are rapidly growing and changing more than ever before. Not only is technology, like computers and personally owned devices like cell phones, tablets, etc., moving and advancing with new applications coming out, but this technology is beneficial to everyday lives by making tasks easier. For example, having a banking application on ones smart phone makes checking savings and other accounts easier. Instead of going into the bank, one can pull it up on their cell phone. Aaron Smith, a researcher for the Pew Research Center's Internet Project, states “Eighty five percent of American adults now own a cell phone of some kind” (Smith 2) and according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of homes with cell phones increased from 36 percent to 71 percent between 1998 and 2005 (Edwards 1), and that was just in 2005. Estaminets for the number of cell phone owners around the world come close to about six billion people (Smith 2). Cell phones are not the only technology increasing. Other technologies like iPads, tablets and other personally owned devices make daily tasks easier by increasing the rate of access to information. Technology’s job is to help society make activities, like finding information, faster and easier. Due to the abundance of technology in our world, children are growing up learning how to use these tools, and expecting them to be apart of their day to day lives much like how technology is becoming a crucial part to their parents every day life. This includes seeing and using different types of technology at school.

Our modern day society depends on technology for everything, can anyone imagine a life without their phone or computer? Probably not, social media and other popular applications have become so ingrained into our daily lives. Not only can we connect with people anytime throughout the day but we also have so many useful applications that help us on a daily basis. Technology has changed our world dramatically over the last several decades. Several generations before us did not have air conditioning, telephones, television much less internet. However, today we have access to all of this and more. Technological advances have not only made changes in how we communicate, but also in how everyday tasks are done. The New York Times explains how social media affects children’s behavior and academics, and how the concept of dating has been altered while Louis C. K. explains how the 21st century takes little things for granted and YouTube channel charstarlineTV shows how daily activities can no longer be done without the use of cellphones.

Maiers “Keys to Student Engagement” shows the raw potential that school systems already have. It also shows that students need the drive and ambition to succeed. Tristan’s article on edutopia provides ideas that are already in motion. His ideas and tips have already started to work in public high school in his community. With the guidance and vision of these three authors public school issues could cease to exist. Even though there’s a lot involved getting administrators (and some teachers) on board, it is possible, and in the near future, a reality.
Since the Internet has emerged from society, access to information has been made readily available for anyone to discover. The Internet connects us to the world everyday, whether at work or at home. It helps us communicate with others; via email, social networking, or blogging. With the absents of the Internet, our society would be missing out on a vast amount of knowledge. Therefore, the Internet is unmistakably beneficial for society to use as part of their daily lives. Also, cell phones have evolved from being solely in place for emergencies, to searching the Internet and paying bills. People of all ages are using cell phones, whether for work or pleasure. There are so many technological devices in our society; however, this technology can be misleading. People voice numerous arguments, both beneficial and non beneficial- concerning technologies in our world.

With this paper I am striving to talk about technology in a classroom setting. I aim to talk about how technology can be positive as well as negative in the classroom. Personally, technology can bring so many creative options in the classroom but can be a set back when there is a misunderstanding in how to use it properly. Within a classroom setting, there should be a variety of learning so every student can find what suits his or her learning best. I will be making sure to cover both sides to this argument.
However, this also discusses the effects of technology on various aspects of our everyday personal experiences, both with each other and with the world around us. On the other hand, technologies such as cell phones have become a problem in getting students to focus in class and distracting drivers and thus, resulting in vehicle accidents. Technology is beneficial, but can also become an inescapable distraction in our lives. It is important to view technology as having the ability to make our lives better or worse, yet also as having the ability to change our personal lives and behavioral patterns. The use of technology makes our daily tasks easier, such as a better sense of direction while driving via a GPS, safety features in our cars such as Auto Drive and Auto Park.

As I reflect on EDUC 6715: New and Emerging Technologies, I have learned effective and efficient ways of incorporating technology in the classroom. This course has helped broaden my knowledge on how to use the various technological devices to facilitate learning. As I look back on this course, I realized that technology is constantly evolving and transforming into newer technologies. It has been a delightful learning experience that provided me support on obtaining, adopting, and applying technology that will help to transform my classroom, school and community. This course has been instrumental in helping me to view technology as a tool, which will revolutionize education. The opinions of many people vary on technology and the effects it has on today’s society. Some say that it’s more beneficial than anything, others completely disagree, and some have mixed emotions. Would you rather read out of a book, or play online learning games with a possible risk of eye problems? It’s about taking matters into your own hands. 71% of people believe technology has improved their lives. 76% of people completely disagree by saying that technology creates a lazy society and that is distracting and corrupting. Daily life with technology is also another huge issue in society. According to a survey taken in January 2013, people feel their work productivity has dropped 8% in the last year. They also felt that their relationships with their family at home dropped 4% in the past year. The opinions vary, but they are needed to show how technology is affecting different people.
Going to school and getting a great education is important for a successful future in today’s world. Years ago, many children did not go to school and many young adults opted to work instead of attending college. In today’s society, gaining a high level of education is almost always mandatory for many jobs. There are many changes being done to the education system along with new items and ways of teaching in the classroom. There is a growing amount of changes in the classroom such as technology, teaching time, teaching styles, and freedom of space.
Almost every child between the ages of eight and twelve is getting cell phones. The average home in America has as many televisions as they do people. Technology is one of life’s most impressive and incredible phenomena’s. The main reason being the shockingly high degree to which our society uses technology in our everyday lives. It occupies every single realm, affecting people both positively and negatively. There are so many different forms of technology but the two most often used are cell phones, and the internet/computers in general. Today’s younger generation was raised alongside technological development. Kids now a days learn how to operate computers and cell phones at a very early age, whether it be through their own technological possessions, a friend’s, or their parents. They grow up knowing how easily accessible technology is, and the endless amount of ways in which it can be used. This paper will be largely focused on the effects of technology on the younger generation because your childhood is when these effects have the largest impact. I am very aware of the subject because I am the younger generation. Aside from major effects on study and communication skills, there also exist the media’s effects on teen’s self-esteem and mental health.
