I once wrote about technology being the foundation of my life. Along with that is the caveat that technology is not all there is to life. With using technology comes great power, power to learn anything one would like to, power to find out information on any subject and any person with a few keystrokes. I have always stressed to my students the importance of keeping personal information private. One task my students had was to Google themselves and their families. The amount of information was usually surprising to them and their parents with whom I had them share the information. In some cases it was through no fault of theirs or their parents that information could be found on the Internet. Today there are newsletters posted from various organizations with all kinds of information. If one lives in the public then there are digital traces to be found online.
As a teacher it is my responsibility to keep my students safe but what is more important is to teach them about the social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding the use of technology. From the first day of school when I introduced our year out came the special online user agreements for the various Web-based projects we did. The students had to get them signed by a parent or guardian before we got started. This was along with the general Internet agreement they signed the first day of school, in some cases when they started Kindergarten. I felt that by sixth grade students should take more responsibility for their actions when using technology. It is also my responsibility to follow laws for children under thirteen. This can make it difficult to do everything I would like to as a teacher in the online world.

I learn on my own, through my studies and from others about how to promote the use of technology resources in a safe manner. I apply this knowledge to my teaching as I continue to learn, research and develop programs in my district.

In “Google never forgets: a caution tale,” Max Fawcett (2006) has cautioned readers to be careful of what you publish on the Internet. In the first part of this essay, he mentioned about the internet makes the digital equivalent of a dishonest diary to record your life knowledge, your opinions, and your shameful stories. It is catastrophic when you can not control over the biography’s content. Also, Google can keep everything that you posted many years ago, and they are coming behind of you same as a shadow. In the second part, he tried to explain to us that some of the information in the Internet are fake, unclear and outdated. The author used from Napa Valley as an example that “superior code is also ruthlessly efficient at finding every reference, however obscure, tangential or dated it might be, when an individual’s name is searched.” The author also stated that he made a website in 1998 and after a while and specifically in 2004 he came to search for himself and he discovered that Google still has this information kept in its memory. He also tried to clarify that Google can be a reason for an employee’s termination or job refusing when his/her boss or interviewer search about their background and find some negative feedbacks on their weblog.

The personal connection Americans have with their phones, tablets, and computers; and the rising popularity of online shopping and social websites due to the massive influence the social media has on Americans, it is clear why this generation is called the Information Age, also known as Digital Age. With the Internet being a huge part of our lives, more and more personal data is being made available, because of our ever-increasing dependence and use of the Internet on our phones, tablets, and computers. Some corporations such as Google, Amazon, and Facebook; governments, and other third parties have been tracking our internet use and acquiring data in order to provide personalized services and advertisements for consumers. Many American such as Nicholas Carr who wrote the article “Tracking Is an Assault on Liberty, With Real Dangers,” Anil Dagar who wrote the article “Internet, Economy and Privacy,” and Grace Nasri who wrote the article “Why Consumers are Increasingly Willing to Trade Data for Personalization,” believe that the continuing loss of personal privacy may lead us as a society to devalue the concept of privacy and see privacy as outdated and unimportant. Privacy is dead and corporations, governments, and third parties murdered it for their personal gain not for the interest of the public as they claim. There are more disadvantages than advantages on letting corporations, governments, and third parties track and acquire data to personalized services and advertisements for us.
Jeffrey Rosen from The New York Times says “ How best to live our lives in a world where the internet records everything and forgets nothing”(Rosen). A Young woman was so close to graduating for her teaching degree, but when her professor looked back on her old myspace and found a picture of her drinking at a party a few years back, he had told her since she was in fact promoting alcohol and partying she would not be graduating. Larry also states “ And because the data is digital it can be forwarded, archived and searched pretty much forever”(Magid). We all get caught up in the moment, thinking about what's happening now over what could make our future. In chapter four the focus switches away from assistive technology supporting students in one content area and focuses on the teaching profession and how assistive technology can assist teachers to employ a universal design for learning. The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) promote learning that best for the student and promoting students a variety of methods to express their knowledge.
We’re learning simpler ways to do things in our everyday lives. We’re beginning to rely on technology to give us the answers, which is nice. I myself use google and the many other resources that technology provides. Most often you can find my phone in my hands. However, I sometimes feel the need to just open a book or do research the old way. Technology is so useful and I agree that it’s great for everything, but it’s almost brainwashing. We’re constantly relying on it to do most everything for us. Technology has really affected the life of many in the world today. An extensive number of people have become addicted to what technology brings to the table. The majority of the audience being young teens. Technology has brought life to social media. Social media is taking over young minds. At a young age, kids are exposed to many things in the internet such as a sexualization. Which can cause many social problems when out in the real world. Not being able to process the right mentality can consequently result in bad decisions. These bad decisions can be regrettable and sometimes can be the cause of unemployment. Technology should be monitored by parent to prevent the problems that these kids encounter.
The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a concept that is used at the point of teachers planning. This idea stems from the field of architecture and attempts to design products and environments so that they are usable by all people, in this case students, to the greatest extent possible without the need for adaption or specialised design. (Ashman & Elkins, 2008) The universal design for learning aims to promote access, participation and progress in regular education for all students and therefore has been suggested as a response that meets the needs of students.
Perhaps the founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, said it best when he claimed that privacy is no longer a “social norm.” Virtually everyone has a smart phone and everyone has social media. We continue to disclose private information willingly and the private information we’re not disclosing willingly is being extracted from our accounts anyway. Technology certainly makes these things possible. However, there is an urgent need to make laws and regulations to protect against the stuff we’re not personally disclosing. It’s unsettling to think we are living in 1984 in the 21st century.
Cyber bullying and online crime must be put at a stop. Parents and teachers should play a great role in regulating what their kids are doing on social media. Parents give their children smart phones, tablets, and computers but they fail to convey the proper way of using those tools. They should teach them the rules of being on social media by telling them from right to wrong. Parents don’t give their children a car to use without telling them the proper rules of how to drive the car. If they don’t teach them how to drive the car then that child wouldn’t know what to do about his or her car and may lead to an accident. This is the same way of how parents should also teach their kids of how to regulate on social media. There are many privacy settings on these social network sites which some kids are not aware off or simply do not care about. We should put an aware of these settings to them and teach them from right to wrong. Parents and teachers should also encourage their kids to come talk to them if they are facing any type of
A safe supportive school climate can also help prevent cyber bullying. A tone of respect and trust can help the student share their feelings. The misuse of technology begins with the school culture and education. The school culture “sets the stage for everything that happens within the school” and affects every aspect. Student engagement, collaboration to prioritize challenges and opportunities, setting goals, action planning, assessing attitude and engaging in openness are the six characteristics that can help build a positive school culture (Taylor & Fratto, 2012, pp. 54-58). It’s also important to educate students about the misuse of technology, the consequences and dependency. The power of blogs, social networking and interacting with a larger audience have to be monitored. Students need to be instructed earlier on password, safety, security and sharing information on the internet. Students do things like write papers, access test and quizzes, and even visit their teacher’s web page where they find information needed for the course. This may seem easy to students who have always had internet in their home with a computer they can work on, but what about the students who have no idea what the internet is, or don’t own a computer or device they can to practice on. This is one of the key reason digital literacy is important. Students no matter the age or background should feel comfortable using the internet at school. A good idea would be to have students visit Cyberethics for Kids, at the Web site of the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section (CCIPS) of the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. Teachers are charged with maintaining a safe environment in their classroom. Students (and parents) expect the teacher to provide protection from exposure to danger of any kind. While students are working online in a classroom/lab environment, the teacher should be alert and always in a position to know what students are up to at their stations. Students won 't try to get away with things if they know they 're likely to get caught. Filtering, which involves blocking Web sites that have been deemed unacceptable for children, is not by any means a completely effective solution to the problem of objectionable material on the Web. Not only are filters vulnerable to being circumvented -- accidentally or on purpose "got around" -- filters also too often block Web sites that are perfectly acceptable, leaving teachers frustrated when they plan to use such sites for

As facilitators of learning, our classrooms are filled with students who are comprised of generation X’ers and Millenial’s. We must be conscious to structure our lessons and approaches so that we can present content in the most effective manner. Technology, in regards to principles of teaching, challenges the teacher to not only learn what the technology is all about, but to learn to integrate it effectively within the context of their individual classrooms. Teachers in classrooms across the nation struggle with computer technology, the many features, and the never-ending cycle of new devices that are bought into their classrooms daily. Because of the lack of training and severe levels of discomfort, teachers have developed a negative disposition towards the use of technology when it applying it to principle. Recognizing the noted factors, it can be resolved that we do live in an interactive world. Our job is to effectively integrate the technology in such a way that it supports, guides, and enhances learning for all parties involved.
