Children are always thought to be carefree and laughing, however sometimes there are hidden problems behind those smiles. The Big Brothers Bigs Sisters organization was founded over 100 years ago to help children with the everyday issues that they are facing. The program is made up of matches that have one “big brother or big sister” and one “little brother or little sister”, more commonly known as “bigs” and “littles”. These pairs of people do various activities together such as arts and crafts, sports and most importantly they communicate with one another. These friendships are built on the trust between the individuals. During the school based program an adult from the community or a high school student will come in during the child’s day and spend an hour or so with the child talking and doing activities. They will meet one day every week until summer break. The community based portion of Big Brothers Big Sisters was made to create a relationship between a child and adult in their local community to positively influence their life. Unlike the matches in the school based program, the matches in the community based program spend more time with each other. Also community based matches are able to go out and do things rather than just stay in one place. They get together two-four days during a month but are together for the whole day. The college club is similar to the school based mentoring program but on a much larger scale. The matches are required to stay together for at least a year however, the college students often decide to stay matched longer because of the impact that the “little” has on them. “ In 2011, only about 15 students were active “Bigs”, today more than 90 University students are mentoring 90 Dayton-area children each week to help them develop confidence, Improve academically and build better futures”(“Little Start, Big Impact” 1). Colleges all over the country are pairing up with local elementary schools to help the children that might be suffering from depression, loss of a family member, being bullied, or they just need a friend. In the couples program, partners or spouses are matched up with a “little”. “Couples in the program can enjoy low cost to no cost activities when they spend time with their little.
