Taking a Look at Lawrence Kohlberg's Studies

Lawrence Kohlberg was your average American boy. He was born in 1972 into a wealthy family. While growing up in Bronxville, New York he attended schooling at Phillips academy, but to a surprise as a student he was very mischievous. After his schooling he became a part of the Zionist cause, helping to bring Jewish refugees through the British blockade. In 1948 he attended the University of Chicago and obtained his BA in one year due to his excellent scores on the entrance examination. He was going to school to study to become a clinical psychologist. While in the process he came across the work of Jean Piaget’s moral development. This caught Kohlber’s interest and Kohlberg himself began to look into moral development. He began to interview children and adolescents on moral situations (Walsh, 2000).

Kohlber soon came out with a book named Rony Cruz is a healthy and active nine year old girl. She is extremely outgoing and definitely has her own thoughts and ideas and isn’t afraid to express them. She is part of the student government in her middle school. She enjoys working to her capabilities and if able beyond. When I was reading her the dilemmas she was listening very well. Being a nine year old of course she got distracted but snapped right back into it once I reminded her to focus. Rony took a couple minutes with each question. She didn’t just blurt out any answer, she carefully contemplated each question to come up with the best answer she could have. Which she did, her answers were very understandable and the reasoning she gave for her answers were very clear and well thought out. ...ive you plenty of evidence to determine where each subject would belong in terms of Kohlberg’s different stages. The study also helps the student asking the questions and looking at the stages a better learning experience and a way to actually put yourself in the mindset of the theory. Both subjects were very cooperative and there answers were different but at some points would be similar. Rony that was at stage three still had a sense of morality. And although she believed that she had to follow her duties as a citizen by following the laws she would follow them in consideration to her morals. Likely Ciara too felt that way, the only difference was that unlike Rony Ciara had a strong idea of what her answers were and what she would do. Rony would contemplate each question carefully trying to gain the respect of all the people in the situation with her answers.
