In today’s fast moving world, sports like Cricket,

Soccer, Tennis play a very important role as they impart a new

energy and enthusiasm in one’s life. To make these sports more

effective and fair, many monitoring systems have come into

existence. One of the most prominent monitoring technologies

that has gained a lot of popularity since its beginning is the

Hawk-Eye Technology. It is used in Sports Broadcasting and

is a development that will strengthen the groups’ presence. We

have reached a stage where human errors can create change

of fortunes for the player as well as for the team. Thus there is

a requirement for a system which will be able to combat these

problems. Hawk-Eye technology was initially used in the field

of cricket to assist the umpire but now it has spread its wings in

many sports as well as in military and automobile industry. In

the year 1970, a Hockey Coach had stated that the players should

start the game by assuming the score to be 0 – 3 down. “ A goal

for your weaknesses, another for your opponent’s strengths and

a third for umpiring errors.” This quote depicts the importance

of Hawk-Eye Technology.

Hawk-Eye is a complex computer system used in cricket,

tennis and other games. Technology of Hawk-Eye was

developed by Dr. Paul Hawkins. He invented the ball tracking

systems in order to improve the quality of sporting decisions

and thus support match officials when making accurate and

quick Line Calling Decisions in real game situations. The

The key statistics that Hawk-Eye can provide are:

• Wagon Wheel:

This wheel shows the regions on the field where the

batsman has made all his runs. The different colors

of the wagon wheel are used to depict the singles, 2s,

3s, 4s and 6s which together make the quick 50s or

centuries.

• Beehives:

Beehives are similar to Pitch Maps but they are with

respect to the batsman. They show where the ball

has passed the batsman, which balls scored runs and

which balls were dot balls.

• Railcam:

This feature focusses on bowlers. Railcam allows

us to know the difference in speed and bounce of

the balls bowled either by the same bowler or by

different bowlers. This also gives us an idea of the

bowler’s line and length along with the variations in

his repertoire.
