Humane society
The humane society is a nonprofit organization, which is a corporation or an association that conducts business for the benefit of the general public without shareholders and without a profit motive. The humane society is also a 501c, a nonprofit American tax-exempt organization. It was founded in 1954 by Fred Myers (1904-1963), its first name was the National Humane Society, later named The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Their first mission was to decrease suffering of livestock during slaughter. The Humane Slaughter Act passed in 1958, this would change the lives of millions of animals around America. The Humane Society began investigating animal experimentation around the 1950s to gather evidence on animal neglect or suffering. Myers said,” every humane society should be actively concerned about the treatment accorded to such a vast number of animals.” In 1961 HSUS investigated dog dealers in the U.S. to gain support for a law to be passed that would prevent cruelty to animals in laboratories. The investigation lasted 5 years, then in February 1966 life magazine published an essay about dog dealers and thousands of Americans wrote to their congressional representatives and demanded action to protect animals and stop pet theft. Later that year the Animal Welfare Act of 1966 was passed, the second major federal humane law passed since world war II. Other goals they had during this time were: reduce homeless dogs and cats, reform inhumane euthanasia practices, redact abuses by pet stores and pet breeding trades, and help wildlife and marine life. Considering the many challenges animals face in the wild, it is understandable that people may be eager to support zoos and may feel that they are protective facilities necessary for animal life. In the article “ Zoos Are Not Prisons. They Improve the Lives of Animals”, Author Robin Ganzert argues that Zoos are ethical institutions that enrich the lives of animals and ultimately protect them. Statistics have shown that animals held in captivity have limited utilitarian function resulting in cramped quarters, poor diets, depression, and early death for the animals thus, proving that Zoos are not ethical institutions that support and better the lives of animals as author Robin Ganzert stated (Cokal 491). Ganzert exposes the false premise in stating
"The Case For Animal Rights" written by Tom Regan, promotes the equal treatment of humans and non-humans. I agree with Regan's view, as he suggests that humans and animals alike, share the experience of life, and thus share equal, inherent value.
The Humane Society of the United States promotes research methods that can potentially replace, reduce, or refine animal use so that animals experience less suffering. An opinion poll was taken by the HSUS on September 23, 2001 on pain and distress in research. The findings were that 62% of people would approve of testing if little or no pain was experienced by the animals, while 75% disapprove when severe pain is experienced.
Four journalists named Helen Jones, Larry Andrews, Marcia Glaser, and Fred Myers thought it would be a good idea to create a nonprofit organization to help animals that have are treated cruelly by either abuse or when they are left alone. The Humane Society has been helping animals since November 24, 1954(2). Their mission since the beginning has been celebrating animals and confronting cruelty. There are a great number of things that the Humane Society has been doing for the animals, like saving them from people who want to harm them. Nationally, roughly four million animals are killed in shelters every year. Of these, roughly 95% of all shelter animals are healthy and treatable. (No Kill Advocacy Center). No animal should have to ever be a part of these awful statistics. What will it take to help save these innocent animals from being killed senselessly? Animal kill shelters are horrible, inhumane, and overall completely unnecessary for multiple reasons: No Kill shelters improve adoption rates, all animals lives are valuable, and No Kill shelters save more money than other shelters.
Humankind has always had a thirst for power; over its peers, environment and spiritual beliefs. To quench this thirst it has gone as far as genocide; but has often employed more subtle techniques, such as mind control. In today’s socio-economical and political worlds, mind control plays a key role in dictating tastes and lifestyles; as well as controlling political thoughts, views, and people’s understanding of the world. It is accomplished using various channels to condition people’s thinking. Publicity and advertisement campaigns saturate people with products, broadcasting over radio, and television which in itself is a prime example. Many religions employ mind control, conditioning their followers to obey without questioning.

Animals have been abused for centuries. Several of the societies against animal cruelty were around in the 1800s, but they weren’t recognized until 1873 (www.americanhumane.org/about-us/who-we-are/history/:first paragraph). Founded in 1866, by: Henry Bergh, the ASPCA is the first humane society in America, and one of the largest in the world. Henry's philosophy is that all animals deserve respect by all humans, and must be protected by law (Henry Bergh). In the early years dogs were used to pull carts and work treadmills simply because men couldn't afford horses, but thanks to Henry's diligent efforts, he helped get a law passed prohibiting dogs to work in such environments. For my persuasive paper I will research the humane society. Humane Society is a charity that cares for abandoned and abused animals. The charity takes care of animals that local shelters are unable to care due lack of resources. This charity also tries to stop animal abuse by making petitions to stop puppy mills, bring attention to wild trade and report pit bull fighting. I have chosen this charity because I had previous experience with this organization. This charity help me save a puppy that I found on the streets last year. Due to the integrity and dedication that this organization had at that one time, it persuades me to pick this charity to be the focus in my paper.
Humane societies are groups that aim to stop human or animal suffering due to cruelty or other reasons. Animal control agencies are services provided by the government. The officers may work with police or sheriff offices, parks and recreational departments, and health departments by confining animals or investigating animal bites to humans. Animal cruelty is an atrocious act that needs to be understood and not undermined. It is easy to push something to the back of our minds and put ourselves in denial when the issue is not right in front of our faces. Towards animal welfare comes the aspect of animal cruelty. Animal cruelty is a fairly recent subject that has affected society. Animal cruelty has now shown comparisons through human abused households. The concern is recent because as society changes humans attitudes change which now affects towards animals.
