One kind of autoimmune disease can damage any part of the body and sometimes out of control is known as lupus. People that will most likely be susceptible to lupus are women between ages ten to fifty, and lean towards Asians and African Americans. There are three main types of lupus. Discoid lupus erythematosus occurs when there are red rashes and mainly affects the skin. Drug-induced lupus can be initiated from a limited amount of medicine that only lasts as long as they are used. The last and most common form of lupus is systemic lupus erythematosus or also called SLE. This type involves is capable of affecting any part of the body which can be mild or severe, which is why the first word “systemic” is part of the name.

Lupus is supposedly a twentieth century disease but some of the signs were mentioned from Hippocrates in 400 BC and Paracelsus in 1500 AD. As time passed on, there were Parisian physicians that had officially discovered lupus by describing the marks as a facial rash and ulcers which looked similar to a bite from a wolf. Some believe that this is how the name lupus, meaning wolf in Latin, was originated. Around the same time in Vienna, the first picture taken showed a butterfly shape of the rash, eventually becoming a worldwide symbol for lupus. In the early 1900’s, Sir William Osler reported there were not only rashes but also chest pain, kidney disease, and severe problems that are not a concern to us in today’s world of modern medicine.

In many cases, people with systemic lupus erythematosus tend to have problems with joints, kidneys, lungs, skin, and the heart. Typically one person will not have every probable symptom and will vary among each individual. Mutual signs of lupus are red rashes, unexplained fe...
