Symbolism is a part of human nature; it has been a form of communication long before the written language. Ideas are conveyed through symbolism. It is frequently used in pop culture today. Many songs and music videos have symbolism in them. The music video for “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus is symbolic for a destructive relationship. Her being stripped to nothing but her skin represents her vulnerability and how love destroyed her; she emotionally becomes ‘stripped and naked’. The wrecking ball represents how she feels. Miley Cyrus becomes the building and the wrecking ball crumbles her to pieces, leaving her in the middle of it all. Another song with symbolism is “Love Club” by Lorde. When Lorde says “love club,” she is using it as a symbol for equality. In this club there are no fights for being someone’s best friend, girls don’t fight over the littlest things, popularity doesn’t matter, you don’t have to worry about fitting in, and the thoughts of suicide are gone; everyone is equal. “Firework” by Katy Perry displays many cases of symbolism. Symbolism is used when Katy Perry says,...
Symbolism can be defined as “the representation of a reality on one level of reference by a corresponding reality on another” (“Symbolism” 564). The word symbol comes from the Greek word "symballein," which translates literally into “to throw together” and suggests the combining of two unrelated worlds. Much...
Symbolism, it can be used for many things, such as expressing meaning, feelings, or emotions through an object by the author. It can be simple things that can show such emotion. Even flowers can have symbolic references, such as Roses. A rose symbolizes romance and love. A Lillie may stand for beauty of temptation. But not all symbols may have a positive reference to it. Example “These emotions are holding me down as if chains her tugging at my every move”. This shows that the character of this situation is being held down by chains that are giving her a hard time and or trapped because of these symbolic chains. Many other objects colors may come into play other short stories or articles seen. Seasons dates can be considered symbols as well. February is a symbol of love because of the holiday Vanlentines Day which is full of romance and love. Others may have their own symbols that can be infered on their own to show their grief or extacy at that time. Symbols may be located everywhere just like in this short story by Eudora Welty. Many have a big impact on what the author is trying to address to her readers young and old all races around the world.
Authors Kate Chopin and Tennessee Williams were both writers who both relied on symbolism within their novels. The purpose of symbolism within the literary world is to represent or depict something by using analogies, objects, or even animals in order to give a deeper or different meaning of what is trying to be described. As described in Literary Devices, symbolism gives writers the opportunity to evoke interests in their readers in order to ‘draw’ them into the story.
Symbolism is used in everyday life. Symbolism is the use of symbols that represent ideas and qualities. For example pink ribbons represent cancer. Another example of symbolism is a horse shoe. It symbolizes good luck in some cases. A four leaf clover also symbolizes good luck.
Throughout Elizabeth Winthrop’s short story, “The Golden Darters,” are symbols of how Emily, the main character, is growing up. The most obvious symbols are Emily piercing her ears, her father’s table where he works on the flies, and the golden darters.
Symbolism is a technique that can be find widely in books, literatures or movies. Symbolism is used to give an object a whole new meaning which can also help develop feelings and meanings to the story making it more thrill and interesting. Symbolism in both The Hunger Games and Divergent have great effects in the story, by both making it emotional and helping the readers understand the book.
Symbols in literacy are tremendously important to make a story more than what it may seem at first glance, but in the story Lord of the Flies symbolism is taken to a new extreme. Nearly everything mentioned in this story embodies something that assists in creating a life lesson from which all people can learn. A symbol is an item or idea within a story that represents a deeper meaning. Throughout this story each symbol has a strong connection with power, the need for authority is blatantly obvious, and is like a reoccurring theme throughout the whole novel. The representation of control over the island is very unique and repetitive; several simple items have an exceptionally commanding role as the story begins to expand. The head of a dead sow placed upon a stake creates an atmosphere of evil that hovers over the entire island and inflicts a certain fear upon everyone. This sow’s head in addition to a conch shell found lying on the island tremendously impact the story. These symbols help to both empower certain individuals and demean other helpless characters, which creates a separat...
Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. Many things can be used as symbolism such as colors, symbols, and objects. Symbolism is used to give another meaning to a character, word, or object and give a deeper meaning to something. The color black is often symbolized as evil or death, while the color white is categorized as life and innocence. The Christian cross can also symbolize many things such as hope, faith, and forgiveness. Objects may also symbolize things such as a chain; it can mean union but can also mean isolation. These are just a few examples of symbolism there is a manifold of things that can have a dual meaning and you don’t know it.
Symbolism can represent a character, action or a setting. It can also represent, or symbolizes something else. For example, the apple design that all the iPhone’s, iPod’s, and apple computers have, represent, or symbolizes something. The apple symbolizes “A tribute to Alan Turing, the man who laid the foundations for the modern-day computer.” In this world everything symbolizes something or represents someone or a thing. For example, figures symbols, colors, numbers, and letters they also can represent, or symbolize something. For example, the flag of the United States has three different colors, and each color symbolizes something. The flag has fifty stars, each star represents a state, it also has thirteen lines red and whites they represent the thirteen colonies.
In the book The Other Side, the author uses tone, symbolism, and audience. She uses them in different ways throughout the story. This essay will be analyzing here use of tone, symbolism, and audience.
The book The Other Side is about a black girl who sees a white girl sitting on a fence almost every day. The black girls name is Clover while the white girls name is Anne. Clover asked Anne, “why are you sitting on the fence.” “You can see everything from up here.” Anne replied. The fence separated whites from blacks. Clover and Anne’s mothers said you can’t go across the fence.
The sense of magical realism is a natural product of literature. Letting aside literature, in reviewing the circumstances of nature of the world, it can be observed that there are a lot of elements that are expressing magical things which are also real. For instance, a sudden change in the weather at a same place from autumn to spring describes a phenomenon, a thunderstone or a sudden earth quick that demolished many long lasting things. A former grows a seed and it gives birth to a plant which becomes a tall tree or it brings many beautiful flowers onto its boughs. The appearance of Sun and Moon in a planned intervals all these happenings have a logic behind it.
After reading the book, The Other Side, one can conclude the story is about two races (black and white) who are divided from each other by a fence. However, two girls, each from the opposite race, meet each other and form a bond. Thus, they use the fence to enjoy each other’s company instead of using it to keep them separated. After analyzing the story, the reader can conclude there is various evidence of symbolism, the audience for this particular story is children, and the tone of the book is inquisitiveness and innocence.
Symbolism is something that represents more than what it really is. It is often by authors in their writing to give it more emphasis. For example:" In life there will always be peaks and valleys" meaning in life there will be ups and downs but we should enjoy the peaks and fight through the valleys. Objects can also be a form of symbolism such as The Bible, it represents more than just a book. It represents Life, Church, Religion, and the life of Jesus Christ and what he stood for. Irony is like a twist or words or the opposite of what is intended. For example: Laughing at someone that just slipped and fell, then later you find yourself slipping and falling is a form of irony. Irony is found in real life situations as well as writings. Symbolism is a technique that gives authors a better story and shows objects as more than what they are. They use techniques like this to catch the reader’s attention.
The use of symbol in poetry and in literature as a whole is commonplace because it is an outlet for the author’s creative psyche. A symbol is a creative use of metaphor, using a comparison but not just a direct comparison. The author attempts to achieve the effect that there is much more than just the reader’s initial reaction creating a want to delve deeper into the true meaning, leaving a vast space of interpretation. Allegory on the other hand is a specific comparison, a symbol that is set in its meaning. This would point towards the absolute meaning of the comparison the poet or author was trying to convey (in other words, a parallel). I have chosen the E.E. Cummings poem “l(a” because it not only encompasses the idea of symbolism through its need for interpretation, but also due to its simple beauty, creating a visual image of a leaf falling.
