Introduction
Urbanization, which is becoming a buzzword during the last few decades, is enlarging at a booming speed. It is predicted that 93 percents urban growth will occur to the year 2020, in the developing world (Elliot J.A, 1999). Generally speaking, more than half of the people around the world have been moved to cities, which led to a series of “matters” connected with people’s life that changed in a dramatical way. In this period, sustainable development, another buzzword during the past few years, came into people’s view and gradually became the mainstream of society development. Its definition is to make the development continue in a long term, which means allowing appropriate economic growth and industrialization without environment damage or undermining the quality of the natural environment (Adams.W.M, 1999). Sustainable development plays a growing part in the world today, for its showing us how to reduce the effect caused by rapid urbanization, namely environmental pollution, deforestation, and scarcity of resources.
Environmental pollution
According to sustainable development, the development of urbanization should be in a eco-friendly way. Along with the speeding urbanization, many factories is zooming in an unbelievable speed to meet the growing demands and consequently causes environmental pollution, such as air pollution and water pollution. Air pollution has been “at levels where serious health effects are reported”, according to Mage David (1996). A way to combat air pollution is popularizing gas purification system in factories. As technology has been making such a progress, the utilization rate of the fuel is close to the maximum. The utilization of heating oil can get to 89% annual fuel utiliza...

Sustainable development is a recent concept that has become important for a wide range of people and industries. Sustainable Development involves maintaining the current rate of development leaving suitable resources behind for later generations to continue to develop.
The concept of sustainable development, a relatively new concept has now taken action into the structure of many present day organizations. Identified as “green growth”, the formation of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index provides a platform for managers to understand what it takes to be a sustainable organization. On the subject of sustainable development, the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) sponsored by the United Nations published a report defining as,“Development that meets the needs of the current generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs and aspirations” (WCED, 1987). Sustainable development is composed of the following two notions. First is the idea of sustainability (to maintain), and secondly, development (to make better) (Bell, 2003). Improvement of our own lives today does not mean at the cost of damaging the quality of
According to the International Institute for Sustainable Development, sustainable development is defined as development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. If we follow this definition, it becomes easy to see that the vast majority of the “developed” world has not, and is not developing sustainably. The idea of sustainable development requires us to consider how our action of developing will affect other countries, and future generations. Many people believe in “the butterfly effect”, where the flapping of a butterfly’s wings in one part of t...
To develop a framework for assessing the sustainability of urban development, firstly, I will identify what mainly constitutes sustainable urban form and function within neighborhood scale, then critically analyze some existing approaches to assessing sustainability of urban development, finally give my own framework for sustainability assessment.
Water and the water cycle have essential roles in almost every environmental system (textbook). The hydrologic cycle, also known as the water cycle, summarizes how water in all different forms circulates through our environment (textbook). There are different parts of the hydrologic cycle that have an impact the climate. Some of these parts contribute certain effects of climate change like droughts, melting glaciers, decreasing river flows, and much more (textbook). This paper will examine the components of the water cycle and the impacts that it takes from climate change.
Sustainable development defined by Sustainable Development Measurement index (N.d.) as “sustainable development refers to social, economic, and environmental development that meets the needs of current society without compromising or limiting future development and growth” (Cantor, 2001). In short, the theoretical approach on sustainability contains three essential elements, which are social, economic and environmental development. In order to achieve sustainable development, nations are needed to balance between the economic development, environmental protection and social consensus. However, in recent years, numerous ecological damages brought by economic and industrial activities and led to disputes among the society. The growth of the human
With the development of urbanization, an increasing number of social problems have emerged. These problems will decelerate the urban development, however, there are many ways in which sustainable development can reduce the impact of these urbanization problems. “Sustainable development seeks to improve the quality of human life without undermining the quality of our natural environment” (Adams, W.M. 1999). Actually, sustainable development can partly solve the urbanization problems, for it can reduce the impact of the problems such as traffic jam, housing shortage and severe pollution, but it is difficult to completely solve these problems in a short time.
Should students take advantage of the public transportation more seriously than owning a car? The public transportation can solves to numerous problems; the bus transportation can be a universal antidote for bigger issues such as global warming. By taking the bus can save students’ time and money, rather than students who have a car have deal with traffic and expensive parking fee. Students who own a car might experience sitting in such a long traffic, where during the traffic cars may produce noxious gases relieving particle of air that can contribute the affect to human health. The public transportation is the best solution for an enormous population of students, so students’ needs to get on the transit a try. The transition system in the

Sustainable development means that the present generations should be able to make use of resources to live better lives in such a manner that it doesn’t compromise the ability of future generations to survive and make better lives for themselves as well. For sustainable development to occur, there needs to be sustainable economic, ecological and community development. Society needs to be educated about ways in which they can use resources, especially natural, in such a manner that it doesn’t cause harm to the environment and put future generations lives at risk.
Recently, as developed countries, many cities have become more suitable to live in with all facilities that people need in favor of a comfortable live style. Therefore, many people migrate from rural areas to urban areas in a process so called urbanization (Wikipedia, 2009). Urbanization has become one of the most important issues facing both people live and governments in most countries. An important term that has been suggested as a policy to solve the problems associated with urbanization is sustainable development. Sustainable development might be defined as a balance between human needs and saving the environment (Wikipedia, 2009). This essay aims to examine the problems of urbanization as well as will discussing how that the policy of sustainable development can be a good solution for it. In addition, the essay will shortly focus on three main points: overcrowding, traffic congestion and air pollution.
The most common definition of sustainability is living in a way that meets the social, economic, and other requirements of the current population as well as ensuring the same requirements will be able to be met for future generations. Living sustainably is something that affects every person on the planet. The way we live now affects our lives today, as well as the future population. Some people believe that sustainability and living green will not matter to them as the effects of their actions will not manifest in their lifetime, but this assumption is incorrect. Currently two-thirds of the services provided to us by nature are declining, 85% of all fish stocks in the ocean are overexploited, depleted, recovering or fully exploited. There was a 38% increase in annual global carbon dioxide and it will take 50+ years for the ozone layer to get back to pre 1980 levels. Global warming is one example of long-term change in the environment that has been caused by humans. Other examples are the introduction of nonnative and invasive species, land development, and changes in water quantity and quality. Statistics according to the article Resilient People Resilient Planet. There is no guarantee that if people continue to live the way they are living, things will continue to be sustainable. However sustainability is not just about the environment, social and economic aspects are equally as important to creating a sustainable world. (Figure 1). In this paper I will explain what it means to live sustainably, why it is a problem, challenges and how humans can live more sustainably.
There are numerous reasons why many people prefer using their private vehicles for their daily commute. However, public transport
In class we discussed what sustainable development meant to us; each group had its own definition. Our group’s definition was that sustainable development is for the long term for future generations, for the basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, and job. The basic will increase over time and our resources will diminish, which why sustainable development is important. Sustainable development is important for future generations so that they end up with a world better than ours. Sustainable development is achievable if society works together to meet everyone’s basic needs and create a better world.
