I do believe it is necessary and possible for agriculture to become more sustainable if we expect to continue to feed and clothe the increasing world population. Sustainable agriculture is needed to serve human needs and preserve our environment, and without the increase of productivity in agriculture, we cannot reduce the risks of poverty, which isn’t going to get any better within time. The world’s population is expected to be on the rise dramatically throughout the next few years, and with economic expansion, will come an increase in the demand of food supply. Though resources are inadequate, and the affects of food security do apply to the way we have our agriculture farming, I think that within time we can still improve customs of cultivation. Keeping up with the supply and demand is what we should be improving for our peers.
Sustainable agriculture is the production of animal and plant products, food, and fiber using methods in ways where the environment is also being protected, public health is being preserved and the care of human communities and animal safety is being looked after. Preserving the environment is practiced by raising crops and animals by not relying on harsh chemical pesticides and the use of synthetic fertilizers. It is much better for our generation to have sustainable farming because growing fruits and vegetable on sustainable farms makes it safer for us to consume, and also for the surrounding areas. This helps conserve a strong ecosystem and healthy lifestyle for all human beings.

Furthermore, if we do not practice sustainable agriculture, our soil has more of a chance to become more vulnerable to droughts and flooding, possibly increase a risk for more global warming, and be less resistant towards antibiotics and pesticides. Having a sustainable agriculture today is vital to how todays farming is done, and changing to make it more effective is the only way we can continue to clothe and feed our increasing world population.

In the movie “American Meat” the writers discussed the difference between commodity farming and sustainable farming. The film does not give a balanced view between the two types of farming. The future of farming is sustainable farming. As seen in the movie, it is possible to sustain all of the American people while practicing sustainable farming methods.
The 1920’s were the singularly most influential years of farming in our country. The loss of farms following the war, and new agricultural practices resulted in the dawn of modern agriculture in our country. The shift from small family to big corporation during this time is now the basis for how our society deals with food today. More and more farm-to-table restaurants, farmer’s markets, and food co-ops are cropping up to meet the demand among consumers for healthy, local foods, as more chefs and consumers recognize the poorer taste and nutritional integrity of ingredients shipped in from far away. Fruits and vegetables that have to be shipped long distances are often picked before they have a chance to fully ripen and absorb nutrients from their surroundings. Traditional agriculture requires massive forest and grassland removal to obtain land necessary to farm on. Deforestation and overgrazing has caused erosion flooding, and enabled the expansion of deserts. It will take a long time to implement these changes and there will be Problems along this journey. The sooner we start this long journey. The longer we have to work out the Kinks in sustainable farming. We at least should think about the future generations that will live on earth. This is the one place we all have to call home and it’s our job to take care of it for the next generations. In order for us to maintain our lives, we need to consume food to supply nutrient-needs for our bodies. As the global population increased, the demand for food also increased. Increased population led to mass production of foods. However, even with this mass production, in under-developed countries, people are still undernourished. On other hand, in developed and developing countries, people are overfed and suffering from obesity. In addition, the current methods of industrial farming destroy the environment. These problems raised a question to our global food system. Will it be able to sustain our increasing global population and the earth? With this question in my mind, I decided to investigate the sustainability of our current global food system.
Envision a farm with an abundance of animals and crops.
