In today’s world, everyone has a sense of security that is born from the technological developments that science has given to society. While they may feel safe, there are much larger threats of disaster and catastrophe that cannot be prevented by months or years of intense preparation. These include natural disaster and human error. Deep Survival by Laurence Gonzales aims to educate the people on how to better protect themselves and prevent death. The novel accomplishes this through sharing personal stories and stories of others who have survived near death experiences. This is an important subject in our culture, and its significance is verified by professional reviews. To further express this importance, there are a plethora of popular television shows in pop culture that seek to entertain as well as educate its audience. Although modern technology makes it feel relatively easy to avoid and escape life threatening situations, basic survival skills, like those taught in Deep Survival by Laurence Gonzales, are a useful tool to have in any situation. These thoughts are reflected in qualified book reviews that further show the significance of the subject in today’s society.
When faced with a dangerous situation, the common mind will flood with consternation, while the body changes its customary routine to adjust to this new development. One of the first changes to occur is the release of adrenaline. That adrenaline will cause the release of stored energy and move blood between the muscle groups (Conger 2). By definition, survival is to continue to live in spite of challenging circumstances. Survival is an instinct that everyone has and people are usually compelled to make tough decisions in order to survive. What happens when those decisions could be pernicious to innocent people and even ruin their lives? Octavia Butler explores this idea in her novel Kindred. The main character Dana Franklin is forced to make some complex decisions in order to survive. Dana is sent back in time to the 1800s to help a little boy. She soon discovers that the little boy is actually Rufus Weylin, her ancestor and she must continue to help him in complicated situations throughout his life because without him she will never come into existence. She goes back and forth between the Antebellum South and her home in 1976 and even brings her husband along. In the story “Death by Landscape,” Unresolved grief and isolation were the two themes, that I discovered. Lois is a widowed mother, who isolated herself from others. Lois experienced a target lost during a week-long excursion in the wilderness. On the second day of the trip Lois experience the loss of her close friend, Lucy. The incident has a deep impact on Lois’s life and changes her whole life. Lois blames herself for the loss. She isolates herself by choice, trying to cope with unresolved grief of her close friend. Her life is empty now that her kids are grown and her husband has died.
It’s a hard thing to explain to somebody who hasn’t felt it, but the resence of death and danger has a way of bringing you fully awake. It makes things vivid. When you’re afraid, really afraid, you see things you never saw before, you pay attention to the world. You make close friends. You become part of a tribe and you share the same blood – you give it together, you take it together. (O’Brien, 220)

In the story the Deep by Anthony Doerr the story is about a young boy who was born with a serious condition of heart problem .The story mainly talks about how this young boy named Tom who his only family is his mom she owns a boarding house which the construction workers who work at the mines their job is to dig for salt. Since Tom has a heart disease and can not do anything fast if he wants to do something he has to do it at a very slow paste the themes that describe the story would be life is a cycle because everyone is born and everyone dies,and life may be hard,but we get through it with the help of others and finally everyone has a purpose in life .

The dying process is often seen as a grueling one, full of pain and anguish. But De Hennezel shows us, that when supported and surrounded by love it can be an amazing experience. The effect one person can have is amazing and can be quite invigorating. Some would say one’s passion for life is incomparable to that of someone who is dying. Murphy shows us how, when faced with death, one can choose to continue living with passion as he did through his work. Their value of life as well as death is inconceivable and can teach those of us who are alive and healthy, a thing or two about life.
