Supervision and Management Leadership is defined as the process of influencing human behavior to achieve organizational goals that serves the public, while developing individuals, teams and the organization for future service. “Effective leadership is a concept both strikingly simple and stunningly complex.”( Schafer, J) “Leadership is not about formal authority; it is the process of motivating, inspiring, convincing, persuading, and in some other way compelling others to follow. ” (Anderson, Gisborne, & Holliday, 2006) First and foremost, I will discuss leadership. Leadership’s function is strategic, while management’s is tactical. To ensure an organization operates in an effective, efficient, and equitable fashion leadership and management is needed. Both are needed, along with balance, for an individual to be effective in a position of authority. Although an effective supervisor might be stronger as a leader than as a manager, a basic level of proficiency on the latter dimension is a requisite to achieve desired outcomes. A supervisor is the person that the agency recognizes as accountable for overseeing subordinates within the agency’s command structure. “Supervisors have many different levels of responsibility. They answer to company management, but they also are responsible for the development and activities of their staff members. A supervisor is a leader who supervises over a person or facility. These supervisors are similar in positon as a director, manager, chief and more. A supervisor handles a wide variety of responsibilities, like helping it subordinates with understanding goals and the facilities targets. Training new, workers on their role and job titles. Assisting with hiring and firing employees. resolving escalations, and many more. Unfortunately some supervisors are not great to work with while others are. Great qualities that make an effective leader would be a supervisor that inspires, motivate, and instill high values in their employees. New supervisors looking for guidance need something they can refer to when faced with certain issues that arise on the job. This manual outlines six supervisory responsibilities and some basic guidelines for effectiveness. It is important to remember that with the variety of personalities in the workplace, each specific situation is going to require a different approach. Effective leadership is crucial to an organization’s success. Leaders can take a quantity of different steps to help keep projects from failing. Leadership is the ability of an individual to influence, motivate and inspire others (Gill, 2006). It is therefore defined as a process whereby a leader influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal (Northouse, 2013). A leader has to make a decision for something to happen and provide his followers with clear direction (Rost et al, 1991). It will evoke feelings of challenge, excitement and involvement for the followers to proceed with the task (Gill, 2006).
Presently many of us have learned that managers are primarily administrators who have learned to write business plans, utilize their resources and keep track of progress. We must learn that we are not limited by job title, and that means we can utilize our management skills in any position that we are in. We must also know that we can use our leadership skills in the same situations. On the other hand we have also learned that leaders are people who have an impact on those that surround them. The main difference that separates these two roles is that management is a function that must be utilized in any type of business, and leadership is the relationship that the leader has with his followers, which in turn can motivate and energize the organization.
It is imperative for supervisors to focus on what is required in order for his/her employees to accomplish their job. They must be supportive of their employees and provide continual feedback on their job performance .Supervisor need to include their employees when making changes that effect they way they perform their jobs or finding new way to do things that were problematic. Supervisors should give their employees more responsibly to make them feel more valued and powerful. There is also a major need for promotion, pay increase and compensation system (educational reimbursement, vacation incentives etc.

Leadership is trait that is extremely important in any society. Leadership is known as the way people attempting to make a difference in a situation. However, I believe that it is better said to be a way of influencing others actions. Leadership is usually connected to a great leader that affected his or her followers in a dynamic way. Throughout the semester for my leadership class, I have expanded the knowledge in numerous ways. I now have fully understanding of the purpose and process of leadership to a society. Being a leader one must maintain an image of being the role model. I believe that this is leader should be who is someone who has the ability to influence, encourage, listen, and nurture. They are able to inspire, stimulate, persuade, shape, and have an effect on others.
The leader’s role is mainly to create the framework for subordinates to make decisions and reach the objectives. In essence, this means the leader will have a support role. Without interfering in the process, the leader must ensure the subordinates are best equipped to move the organisation forward. This generally means two things: first, providing the resources for the group to operate efficiently and second, bestowing the subordinates with educational opportunities to ensure the knowledge levels within the group are
As a supervisor you have the responsibility of playing many different roles both to the employees that you supervise as well as to the management that is above you. The management that is above you wants to see that your performance is a positive one. In order to do that you need to have a good understanding of the employees that you are supervising and have the skills that are needed to be a great supervisor. Workers come from all generations and have many different personality traits as to how they work best and there are many different ways in which one can supervise others. In order to be the best supervisor that you can be you need to know what supervising style you should use with the different employees that you have.

It is a social influence process, which involves voluntary action on the part of followers and it is always purposeful and goal-oriented. Leadership deals with influence and is not the same as management, which includes planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling.
