Suffering In Silence: Preventing the Sexual Abuse of Children One of the most hated acts in the world is the sexual abuse of a child. It confuses them, harms them physically and damages the psychological core of their being. Though most would admit to being against such horrible acts of savagery, they do not know how often it goes on behind closed doors - in families, camps and other places. The lack of education and resources about the issue are a problem. If educating others could prevent even just one child from being sexually abused, it would be worthwhile. Sexual abuse is any sexual act (touching or non-touching) that is forced on another person. The sexual abuse of a child occurs when there is an adult and a minor engaging in sexual activity that is forced. It could also involve two minors if one is forcing the acts on another. The American Camp Association defines it as “any situation where a child is used for sexual gratification. This may include indecent exposure, fondling, rape, or commercial exploitation through prostitution or the production of pornographic material.” (Child Abuse Prevention Resources) The horrible truth is that sexual abuse commonly occurs within families (this could involve parents and/or siblings) or with people the families and victim know and trust. Any sane person would look at these actions and consider them horrible, but they still exist, and must be stopped. Obviously the use of children for sexual gratification is bad, but how bad is it? First of all, it is not just the initial incident that is the crime. The psychological issues facing children who have been sexually abused are numerous. Children who are abused sexually have the event (or multiple events) follow them into their adult l... ... middle of paper ... ...ldren that sexual advances from adults are wrong and against the law. (Preventing Sexual Child Abuse) The national hotline for sexual assault is 1-800-656-HOPE. Other numbers to call are 1-800- CHILDREN (Prevent Child Abuse America) and 1-800-4-A-CHILD (Child Help USA). There are plenty of sources on the internet that explain the details and signs of sexual abuse further, and give important information about the reporting and handling of such crimes. The sexual abuse of a child is a horrific criminal act, and one that is much too common in the United States. The only way to prevent it is to become knowledgeable and educated on the topic and to not stay silent, but speak for a child that may not have the voice to do so. These children cannot speak for themselves, and it is up to you to get them the help they need and possibly prevent the crimes from ever happening.
The importance of growing up in today’s society and being educated about sexual abuse is an important aspect of knowledge everyone should have. Many parents also do not recognize the warning signs from their children early on to prevent them from turning into something bigger.
Finkelhor, D., Hotaling, G., Lewis, I., & Smith, C. (1990). Sexual abuse in a national survey of
Child sexual abuse is an umbrella term describing offenses in which an adult engages in sexual activity with a minor or exploits a minor for the purpose of sexual gratification (NSPCC, 2016). The American Psychiatric Association states that "children cannot consent to sexual activity with adults," and condemns any such action by an adult as "a criminal and immoral act which never can be considered normal or socially acceptable behaviour" (American Psychological Association, 2016). Only at the beginning of the 1900s did Western society begin to value children as persons who’s "creative and intellectual potential require fostering" rather than "cheap labour" (Heller, 2012).
Child abuse happens when an adult be it a parent, caretaker or a member of the family intentionally hurts a child or an adolescent physically, emotionally, sexually or fails to adequately supply for the material needs of a given child
Child abuse has been throughout the United States from the early 1870s up to this day. The question is what can we do as a whole to prevent it from continuing. We have thought of organizations to programs to speaking out of what has developed through time and seen remarkable results. "While some children die of neglect and abuse, most victims survive with psychic scars that stay with them throughout their lives." (Grapes). Ask yourself, are you the one with courage willing to speak up against such a harsh state or will you stand back and not strive for what is the righteous choice.
As reported in Child Maltreatment 2013, out of the estimated 905,000 victims of child abuse and neglect reported in the United States in 2013, 8.8% were victims of sexual abuse. 1 This means that in that year over 79,600 children were sexually abused in the United States. “There is general agreement among mental health and child protection professionals that child sexual abuse is not uncommon and is a serious problem in the United States.” 2
Sexual abuse includes any sexual act in which one person has not agreed to it. A woman can be sexually abused by means of, but not limited to force, coercion, blackmail, threat, or embarrassment. People who sexually abuse adolescents should not only be punished to the fullest extent of the law, but also be terminated from all children, even their own; because it robs the adolescent of their adulthood and their precious quality of youth, which not only causes them to grow up faster, but also causes damage to their physical and mental conditions. Sexual abuse is unwanted sexual abuse. There are different types of sexual abuse. Most people think rape is the only type of sexual abuse but the truth is there are different kinds but the kinds that will be discussed are molestation and rape.
Child abuse, while having many different forms and levels of severity, can be basically defined as the maltreatment of a child by a parent or other adult. When one thinks of child abuse, usually the first thing that comes to mind is physical harm, but the issue is actually much more complex. The abuse of a child can also be manifested in verbal and emotional forms, as well as in sexual molestation. All forms of child abuse generally result in similar emotional disorders and behavioral issues, but the major consequences of sexual abuse, such as mental or emotional scarring, promiscuity, and the tendency of former victims to become sexual abusers, cause it to be the most severely damaging form of child abuse.
There are so many things that I have never found really interesting to me or at least something that could make me want to try and change it. I still don’t understand why people want to hurt kids. This is not something that should be a norm in our culture, but it is. This should be changed instead of just letting it happen sure it is going to be hard to charge, but there are still things that we can do to help kids that have gone through it and their parents. It also does depend on who abused them then they can go to jail. There are still things that we do not have a real understanding as to what sexual abuse is in general. It is not a well-known topic unless some has been abused. We assume that the victim is to blame them for what happened to them, but it is not their fault. We blame people because we do not want to see the perpetrator as the one who should be in trouble. In this case we do not have the knowledge as to what sexual abuse really is. The definition of sexually abuse is a sex act that is non-consensual and this could be anything. This does not mean that consensual sex is
