Time goes by so fast, growing up it seemed the day I would graduate from high school was far away and a distant dream. That day is no longer just a dream, but a memory. Walking across the stage on June 3, 2012 is a moment that will be engrained in my heart forever. These changes took place during my time in the Adolescence stage of development. It was defiantly all about me during this stage. I was egocentric but it comes with the time period. It is during this time where I graduated from middle school, high school, celebrated me sweet 16, learned to drive and etc., all huge events in the eyes of an Adolescent. In accordance with Erik Erikson theory of development, it is true that I went through an identify versus confusion stage. I would find myself questioning who I was and why was it that my life was not as easier as those viewed around me. I did not understand why I did not live in a house. I thought that everyone was supposed to live in a house. I also questioned why my family was the only dysfunctional one. I lived in a two flat and on the top lived my family and I, while the bottom part was my grandmother and five of my cousins up until my first year in high school. My cousins were on my mom’s side of the family and are her nieces and nephews. I knew that my mom’s sister, who I have a hard time calling aunty because she was never there, was their mom but it did not mean anything. She was very young when she first started having kids and because she could not cope with having children, she took to the streets for something to make the situation better. My aunt has been addicted to crack cocaine all of my life. It is one thing to know that it exists but to live with someone with this addition takes a toll on... ... middle of paper ... ...ychology for a short amount of time. I am finding out all the about the mind and how people think. I don’t know what the future has for me but I feel in my heart that the study of psychology will get me there. I am reminded everyday about how short life is and to live everyday to the fullest. I truly understood know the meaning of the saying. Life is a gift and we only get one to live. For me the true meaning of living life to the fullest means spending time with those who mean the world to you, doing something outside of your comfort zone, helping others, and just not taking anything in your life for granted because in a blink of an eye it can be gone. Looking back on everything God has granted me made me a believer. A believer that life is a beautiful thing and we should do everything we can to not only improve our on but those surrounding us.
Are you are confused as to where you are going in life? Do you sometimes feel like you just do not know who you are, or who you want to be? Do not worry, this is not uncommon. In fact, according to psychoanalyst Erik Erickson (1902-1994), most young people ages fifteen to twenty years of age feel the same way. Erickson, a psychoanalytic theorist, took the human life cycle and categorized it into eight stages. One such stage would be identity versus role-confusion. During this stage, adolescents begin to truly form who they are in life. They form their present off of the good and bad experiences of their past. Erickson believes that the stages in the life cycle apply to nearly everyone. It does not matter where or what era you are from. Take, for example, a character from Bound Feet & Western Dress by Pang-Mei Natasha Chang. Chang writes a dual memoir of her and her great-aunt’s lives. In her novel, Chang tells the story of her great aunt, Chang Yu-i, growing up in a changing world. Even though Yu-i is born and raised in China during the early 1900s, she still faces the conflicts of trying to find herself.
Theories abound around how people develop emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually. This essay will examine the theories of five leaders on the subject of development.
Looking at my life through Erik Erikson’s Identity Theory perspective, I hope that I can grow old and enter the final stage of psychosocial development with a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction, believing I have coped with life’s victories and failures.
This period is marked by physical, social, moral and emotional development (Davies, Hartdegen, Haxell, Le Geyt & Mercier, 2012). It is a time when the adolescent’s sense of self or identity is becoming much more clear and they are beginning to understand their role in society, starting to question the morals of others and contemplating their own moral and ethical beliefs (Davies et al., 2012). During this time Erik Erikson believed that adolescents are faced with the psychosocial stage of identity versus role confusion (Berk, 2008). Adolescents explore their values and role in society, overcoming this conflict to better understand their own identity, however if they do not fully overcome this conflict, Erikson believed that the adolescent would be confused about their values and future adult roles (Berk, 2008). This conflict was clearly demonstrated in my own development during the late teenage years when I experienced both the results of failing to overcome and then overcoming Erikson’s fifth psychosocial stage. At age eighteen I finished secondary school and began my tertiary studies, I had been accepted into the degree I had wanted to study since middle childhood, however I quickly learnt that I was enjoying neither my studies nor my experience of life in halls of residence. Well as we all know Jean Piaget was an very important person in our history. Piaget was born August, 9th 1896 Piaget died of unknown causes in September , 16 1986 they would like to think he died of old age. He was born to Arthur Piaget and Rebecca Jackson in Neuchatel, Switzerland. His mother was a very kind and energetic woman but she did have small temper problems and it made family life very hard in the household of Piaget’s family. His mother’s mental disorder is one of the main things used to inspire Piaget’s desire for the cognitive thinking of the mind. He also became interested in pathological psychology during this time. His father was a very well dedicated man with his writings of medieval literature. At just the age of 11 Piaget was already starting his career as a researcher, because he had recently wrote a short paper on an albino sparrow. Shortly after that he continued to study natural sciences and also received his Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Neuchatel in 1918.
Chapter one provided a brief overview on child development, which included debated topics, theories and the various stages of development. The chapter was an introduction to readers that outlined the basic notions of child development and how they can be implemented while working with children. The field of development includes factors such as nature, nurture, existing conditions for the child and the child’s own traits. In order to understand and effectively work with children, the chapter emphasizes the importance of each factor and how they relate. Child development has been divided into three categories: physical development, cognitive development and social-emotional development. Although different, these domains are interconnected and

Researching this topic has taught me that we can’t skip over skills and expect to have success or live happily ever after. I now realize how important learning from my mistakes can be. The theory of Cognitive development by Bruner can benefit greatly to overall development of the children when applied in an early years setting and in the home too. Children’s cognitive development has been viewed by different theorists, and they have found how they can help parents in their child’s development.
Developmental theories are broken up into two perspectives; Life-course, and Latent Trait. These perspectives may answer questions on why juveniles have grown to lead a destructive life-style and why others grow out of their delinquency. Latent trait explains that some tendencies we are may be born with and how important it is to be there for our children. Our parenting skills do have a profound effect on how our children may lack self control or have an impulsive behavior.
During this time, people will find themselves facing the task of self-discovery. Everything from what they believe in, what they want in life, to discovering who they are as a person (Santrock 2014). Technically, I am still in this stage. I remember facing many questions like where I wanted to go to school, what I wanted to study, and even questions on what kind of lifestyle I wanted to live. During the times these questions were usually asked, I was extremely insecure. I felt like I didn’t belong anywhere and that I wasn’t pretty enough. As I progressed through this stage I started to see what really made me happy and where I wanted to fit in with society. An increase of independence can lead to better interactions with schools, neighborhoods, and communities (Sokol 2009). I started to get involved with student senate, Dance Company, and community service during the earlier years of adolescents. I didn’t start out doing these things but I had to adapt and change to participating in things that didn’t make me feel uncomfortable. I have had more than one identity crisis; I went from being a total stoner, to partying/drinking every day, joining the Mormon religion, practicing Buddhism, and then to wanting to live in a van for the rest of my life. As I reach the end of this developmental stage, I have a sense of self. I have learned to respect others regardless of differing factors like religion. It is inevitable, children and adults constantly evolve and the evolution of this population requires an ongoing scientific investigation (Eberbach & Crowley, 2009). The scientific investigation of the evolution of children and adults is described as developmental psychology. Developmental psychologists establish theories of developmental trajectories, interpersonal, intrapersonal, emotional, and cognitive processing. Moreover, developmental psychologists endeavor to provide descriptive and expository research to enhance client and professional development (Machery, 2011).
Erik Erikson states, “In the social jungle of human existence, there is no feeling of being alive without a sense of identity.” With that being said, I have become the person I am today with those in my life influencing my development, and I wouldn’t feel “alive” if it wasn’t for them. Those in my life have helped me find a sense of identity and figuring out who I am really am and what I am made of. Therefore, I can relate my development to the stages of Erik Erikson 's psychosocial development. I chose to interview, my mother, my cousin Bailey, my grandma, my sister, and my best friend Allison.
Off the five developmental theories, I would like to describe and explain two grand theories, Cognitive theory and Behaviorism.
Each of the eight stages in Erikson’s theory has its own crisis and achievement period. One stage must be completed successfully in order to move on to the next. If not completed fully, an individual might have an abnormal development and perhaps later return to the stage to try to resolve it, causing disruptions to the person’s normal life responsibilities. Understanding of what an adolescent is experiencing when searching for identity, tend to be very easily unstable. Adolescents experience various emotional states. Nothing to worry about, but the adolescent may feel it is the most critical issue they are faced with in life. Erik Erikson begin this journey because of his own subjective experiences of feeling confused, and shameful, and deceived by his own parents. In search of his identity was the driving force of the Identity crisis concept. Each psychosocial stage of Erikson’s theory has played an intricate part of one’s life span. The fifth stage identity vs. role is one of the most crucial stages of life. The teen years are a time of personal exploration. The adolescent years are like exploratory surgery. Those who can successfully establish a healthy identity develop a sense of loyalty. Those who do not complete this stage well may be left feeling confused about their role and
