The Jews faced a long history of persecution and racism. Envy, greed, and thirst for power caused groups such as the Assyrians, Babylonians, and Romans (to name a few) to persecute, exile, and threaten the existence of the Hebrew community. The Diaspora was definitely not a single event taking place over the course of one night, it was rather a series of dispersals by varying groups of people continuing up to the present time. The Diaspora resulted in the spread of the Hebrew population along with their culture and beliefs, which ultimately strengthened the Hebrew community. The Hebrew Diaspora was a forced movement of Hebrews as a direct result of racial prejudice and anti-Semitic movements, ultimately resulting in the spread of the Hebrew community along with their culture and belief systems throughout the global spectrum. The Diaspora was not a new concept as it affected communities such as the Africans through the infamous African Slave Trade prior to Hebrew Diaspora. The Hebrews had a long history of persecution starting with their earliest exile from the kingdom of Assyria. The Hebrew community was exiled more than once, scattering the population and the community all over the face of the globe. However, the earliest Diasporas occurred within the Hebrew community was a result of the brutal actions of the Assyrian and later, the Babylonian kingdoms. In the year of 721 BCE, the Assyrians intruded the homeland of the Jews—Israel—and further conquered and annihilated the North Kingdom of this land. He was born on September 30, 1928 in Sighet, Romania and grew up with his two parents, Shlomo and Sarah Wiesel, and his three sisters. Hilene Flanzbaum recalls that what is called the great wave of Eastern European immigration to the eastern United States occurred between 1880 and 1920, after which generations of Jewish-American immigrants established what it meant to be Jewish in America (2013, p. 485). Ilan Stavans points out, however, that the original Jewish settlement in what would become the United States began as early as 1654 with twenty three Portuguese-speaking Sephardic Jews from Recife, Brazil (Stavans, 2005, p. 2).
Could you imagine a cold breeze that just cuts you up left and right? Or perhaps long days of starvation, with the sight of grass pleasing your stomach. For Elie Wiesel this was no imagination, nor a dream, this was in fact reality. Such a horrifying experience in his life he felt he had to share in a book called Night. Gertrude Samuels, who wrote the review, "When Evil Closed In," tries to help you depict on what devastating situations Elie was put through.
Wiesel, in essence, is now the same as Moshe the Beadle, one of the first Jewish deportees and the only one to return to the city to warn others. “He told his story and that of his companions," (page 4, 5th paragraph). Elie has become Moshe. He tells his story, not for himself, for he has already experienced the horrors, but to make sure that people are aware of what has happened, and so that it never happens again. The mood of night is harder to interpret.
“The Perils of Indifference” In April, 1945, Elie Wiesel was liberated from the Buchenwald concentration camp after struggling with hunger, beatings, losing his entire family, and narrowly escaping death himself. He at first remained silent about his experiences, because it was too hard to relive them. However, eventually he spoke up, knowing it was his duty not to let the world forget the tragedies resulting from their silence. He wrote Night, a memoir of his and his family’s experience, and began using his freedom to spread the word about what had happened and hopefully prevent it from happening again.
Every man, woman, and child has his or her breaking point, no matter how hard they try to hold it back. In Night by Elie Wiesel the main theme of the entire book is the human living condition. The quality of human life is overwhelming because humans have the potential to make amazing discoveries that help all humans. Later on in history Judaism and Jews caught even more flack. In Europe which was very strong in the early Christian Church; Jews were a clear minority. Because the Church kind of ran Europe, prejudice and anti Semitic laws came about. One in the sixth century was the Justinian Code, the Jews couldn’t read their Bible in Hebrew, and Jews couldn’t testify in court against Christians. Specifically in 533 Jews couldn’t marry Christians, work with them, hold a public office or appear on the streets of Holy Week. These ideas continued and became violent.
Many themes exist in Night, Elie Wiesel’s nightmarish story of his Holocaust experience. From normal life in a small town to physical abuse in concentration camps, Night chronicles the journey of Wiesel’s teenage years. Neither Wiesel nor any of the Jews in Sighet could have imagined the horrors that would befall them as their lives changed under the Nazi regime. The Jews all lived peaceful, civilized lives before the German occupation. Eliezer Wiesel was concerned with mysticism and his father was “more involved with the welfare of others than with that of his own kin” (4).

Eliezer “Elie” Wiesel was born September 30, 1928 in Sighet Transylvania, now Romania. Wiesel was the third child of four. His two older sisters were Hilda and Beatrice Wiesel, whom he was not as close with compared to his little sister, Tzipora. His mother and father were named Sarah and Shlomo Wiesel. In 1944, Wiesel’s family and the remainder of the community were placed into two separate ghettos in Sighet, formed by the incoming Nazis. Later on, they were relocated to Auschwitz, where Elie’s mother and Tzipora were killed. Then, he and his father were moved to Buna and finally Buchenwald. In Buchenwald, Elie’s father died, and only days later Elie was liberated, now sixteen years old. Elis Wiesel did not write Night until 10 years after his liberation, and continued on to write books such as, And the World Would Remain Silent in 1956 and Dawn in 1961 (“Elie Wiesel”).
