The Civil War split the nation in half. It tore apart families, and Union soldiers against Confederate soldiers for four miserable years. From the first shots fired at Fort Sumter 1861, and ending with a unanimous Confederate victory in 1865. All in all 630,000 people died and many thousands wounded. The deaths in the Civil War totally surpassed the death totals from any other war (1). For those managed to survive the up hill battle just began, they faced many unknowns in a world moving in an uncertain direction. With the north beating the succeeded south in the war, politicians faced a hard task of reuniting the divided country. With reconstruction now in affect, both northern workers, and southern farmers now face many new obstacles and uncertainties about their jobs. The southern farmers had it bad, they lost the war, lost their slaves, and were forced to move west in order to find new farmland and continue to make a manageable living. However the north and south would find out that they would need each other in order to move the country forward. Most of the southern farmers moved west to find new job opportunities and fertile farmland however they were faced with many problems such as living conditions and bugs. When moving west, most farmers decided to settle in Kansas or Nebraska. The Homestead Act was instituted in 1862, if gave 160-arce farms to settlers to improve to land and live on it (3). If the farmers felt this was still to small of a land they were able to buy more land or borrow money to buy the land. The problem with that was that there was very little amount of trees to make houses so farmers resorted to making housed from sod (11). “The Sod wall is about 2 feet thick at the ground and slopes off on the outside... ... middle of paper ... ...trokes occurred. Some Pennsylvanian railroad workers worked shifts as long as 15 to 18 hours, and their pay had already been reduced by more then one-third. The railroad strikes coast over 10 million dollars worth of damages (5). In did not look good in the north either, where industry workers faced difficult problems after the Civil War. Post Civil War, the western farmers and the northern industrial workers did not get on with their lives easily. They both had to overcome many difficulties and battle up hill after just finishing up with the goriest war of all time. It took a while for both the western farmers and northern industry workers to settle into their new lives. However if it wasn’t for the strides made yesterday, this country would not be in the position it is in today. Yesterdays struggles help make the superpower known as the United States of America.
The Civil War, beginning in 1861 and ending in 1865, was a notorious event in American history for many influential reasons. Among them was the war 's conclusive role in determining a united or divided American nation, its efforts to successfully abolish the slavery institution and bring victory to the northern states. This Civil War was first inspired by the unsettling differences that divided the northern and southern states over the power that resided in the hands of the national government to constrain slavery from taking place within the territories. There was only one victor in the Civil War. Due to the lack of resources, plethora of weaknesses, and disorganized leadership the Southern States possessed in comparison to the Northern States,
The Civil War split our nation, Americans fighting Americans, brother against brother. The war lasted four long years, a key battle fought westward was the turning point in the war: the Battle of Vicksburg.
The Civil war was possibly the greatest tragedy that this country had ever faced. Years of constant arguing, compromises and cynical ideas about slavery pushed this so called "United Nation" into an atrocious collision between the Northern abolitionists and the Southern proslavery farmers and plantation owners. The nation suffered enormous losses economically and went into a downward spiral. The reconstruction period began with many leaders stepping up to try and fix this crippled country, but it didn't turn out like everyone hoped. Slavery was still the largest issue and the reconstruction halted because of the disagreements the people faced. After many years of working, compromising and passing laws, the task proved itself to be impossible, as the country remained to be separated. The lack of unity was present because most of the amendments, laws and rules passed during reconstruction were created to protect and ensure the rights of African Americans. However the South continued to promote slavery and "putting blacks in their place" until the 1950's.
The Civil War was when the United States split because of the injustice of slavery. The North insisted to free the slaves, but the South refused (Wulf et al). After four years of fighting, the south surrendered at the Appomattox court house on April 9, 1865. By that time, over 680,000 americans had died. Even though the war was over, there was still tension between the North and the South, and their anger was directed at Abraham Lincoln, which eventually lead to a story that changed the United States forever (O’Reilly and Zimmerman 33-37).
The Civil War was a hard fought battle between the North and the South. The Civil War was caused by four main things: sectionalism, lifestyle differences, secession, and slavery (Wise). Slavery was the ultimate cause of the Civil War. The different leaders from the North and South had a large impact on what happened during the Civil War and how the battles were fought. The battles of the Civil War brought turning points and tragic moments in American History. In the end the North won and took control of the country and tried to bring it back together as quickly as possible. The Reconstruction Era after the war lasted for 12 years as the Presidents tried to reunite the split country (Reconstruction). The Civil War was a long hard fought war that ultimately changed the U.S. forever.
In the years following the Civil War, it was a tumultuous time for America and it's citizen's. In the southern states, people were dealing with not just the loss of their slaves, but also social upheaval, as well as the rebuilding of an economy that had largely been destroyed. In the north, we have the struggle of the common factory worker and the saga of the early industrial age, as well as the early beginnings of the labor union and the struggles that came with the formation of those organizations. In the west, those that chose to be beneficiaries of the Homestead Act were cultivating their 160 acres of land, as well as facing the challenges of unpredictable weather, lack of good soil and in the end, their own lack of skill.
Following the American Civil War, the whole nation was forever changed and was the result of many good and bad things. Although it was a very costly war and was So, the Civil War did define us and made us the good and the bad things we are and led to an extremely significant change because slavery was abolished once and for all and African American rights followed many years later, the Federal Government imposed more power over the states, our country was divided for a while, and it left the nation in debt due to the fact that we fought each other.
No other conflict has brought as much bloodshed, trauma, and division to the United States of America than the American Civil War. While other wars that Americans have fought in may have been fought on larger scales, with grander armies and greater resources, none compare to the lasting effects of the Civil War which continue to plague the Nation to this day. Approximately 618,000 Americans lost their lives between the years of 1861 and 1865. States, cities, and families turned on one another in a desperate struggle; a struggle which was to continue to divide the Nation long after the last guns had been fired.
