Women were always expected to stay home and take care of daily chores. Compared to the men, the women weren’t treated as equally. Women were treated as property towards the men. Everything a woman owned, a man owned. I am going to discuss what has changed from the beginning of women’s rights till now. I will also talk about specific time periods and what has occurred during those periods. An example of a major contributor to women’s rights would be Susan B. Anthony. She was an American civil rights leader to women during the 19th century. A more specific time period would be sometime around the 1800’s or later. She also was involved with Women’s suffrage. Susan also made an impact on those women. Susan was a leader instead of a follower, and even though she wasn’t the most know leader or activist in women’s rights, she still tried to make a contribution to her community. She made a commitment to the women with no rights, and had the quality of a leader. Another thing she tried to do was giving. She tried to give freedom with nothing in return, and never lowered her expectations for anyone. All I think she asked for was a chance to prove that confidence was the right answer. I also think that she supported them as well as they supported her.
Starting off from 1 BC and before, I can definitely say that many girls and or women were married at a young age. A majority of women would be already married from the ages of twelve to fourteen. Basically, all of those were arranged marriages. Even though that is so, they had arranged marriages so that way they would marry their own social class. Women were only second-class citizens. They were supposed to stay home cook, clean, achieve motherhood and please their husbands. The constitution did not allow women to vote until the 19th amendment in 1971 due to gender discrimination. Deeper in the chapter it discusses the glass ceiling. This paper will discuss the well published work of, Pomeroy, Sarah B. Goddesses, Whores, Wives, and Slaves: Women in Classical Antiquity. New York: Schocken, 1975. Print. Sarah B. Pomerory uses this book to educate others about the role women have played throughout ancient history. Pomerory uses a timeline to go through each role, starting with mythological women, who were called Goddesses. She then talks about some common roles, the whores, wives, and slaves during this time. Pomerory enlightens the audience on the topic of women, who were seen as nothing at the time. Men were seen as the only crucial part in history; however, Pomerory’s focus on women portrays the era in a new light.
The lack of participation of women in society in the United States before the women's rights movement in 1948 was remarkable. They did not participate in activities such as voting and fighting in wars. They also could not own property and "belonged" to their father until they were married, when they would then become the property of their husband. They were brought up to get married, often while they were still very young, then to become a good mother and housewife. The lack of activity though changed during the American Revolution that lasted from 1775 to 1783. This American Revolutionary experience had a great impact on the eventual movement for women's rights.
The thought of women having equal rights has caused major controversy throughout American History. Women have fought for their rights for many years, wanting to be more than a wife or a maid. Women’s Rights Movement was an effort by many women around the U.S standing up for themselves. Feminists like Charlotte Perkins Gilman had a big impact on the movement by writing stories and articles, she spread awareness by writing these. Throughout this Movement women got the right to vote, and many more opportunities they were not offered before.
As women started working, patriarchal control of the family was upset (Faragher 400). Women were now bringing in income just like the men were and to them this was empowering. They now longer depended on a man to survive. Now that women were working many also wanted an education beyond high school. Women started going to college and with a better education were able to further increase the interest of the women 's rights movements (Knight 361). Despite these advances women still were not close to gaining equality to their male counterparts. However they did gain more control of the family’s well being.

“The history of the past is but one long struggle upward to equality,” this was stated by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, a very crucial women’s suffragist. Over time, women’s history has evolved due to the fact that women were pushing for equal rights. Women were treated as less than men. They had little to no rights. The Women’s Rights Movement in the 1800’s lead up to the change in women’s rights today. This movement began in 1848 with the Seneca Falls Convention. The constitution of the United States is largely modeled on that of the republic. The role and circumstances of Roman women also changed rapidly since ancient Rome was legendary founded on 753BCE and was fell in the fifth century. Roman women had some degree of independence for the ancient world when compared to Greek women.
