Stress in College
Every person will experience some degree of stress in his or her life. Stress can be healthy.
Stress can make a person feel hopeless, helpless, and powerless. Constant worry about
problems can cause a diversity of physical symptoms. Some people face stress more than
others do. College students deal with stress each stage of courses. Gender, age, and finance
is a major influence on how a person experience stress in college.
Bettina (2001) conducted research on stress stating, ‘’coping strategies used by adolescents
prove that boys use more problems oriented, and direct action approaches to stress. Bettina
(2001) says, ‘’Girls use passive and seeking strategies to cope with stress’’. Women like to talk
about their stress with others and try to find friends to be of assistance to them. Men will
put unwanted energy into doing energetic things similar to sports, working or television. In the
majority of households, girls are encouraged to converse feelings more than boys. Venting to
someone can help keep away from the sensation that stress is overpowering. Aid-win,
Sutton,and Lachman (1996) studied whether stressful episodes provide content to the
development of coping resources and reported,’’ 81.9% of men reported solving recent
problems by using prior coping strategies gained through encountering problems in their lives,
work, and family’’.
As a person gets older, he or she is capable to cope with stress better. An older person will
find ways to minimize excitement and energy levels. A returning student, will tend to know
exactly what he or she wants to do with his or her future. Having insight into your future makes
a person more focus. Returning students do not have the need to quench any curiosity with
doing anything that will stray from their vision. When a student is eighteen years old recently
out of high school, your mentality is different. A younger student is not sure of what he or
wants to do. A new student becomes very curious, with new a found freedom. New students
tend to feel as if he or she were on top of the world and life will just get easier after high

By learning information from teachers, students become better people, in a couple of ways. Besides inquiring knowledge from their teachers, students learn to work with one another, open their mind to other peoples’ thoughts and ideas, respect one another, and learn different techniques for life’s issues.

Everyone deals with stress at some point in his or her life. Most people deal with it daily. As defined in the book called Principles and Labs for Fitness and Wellness, stress is, “The mental, emotional, and physiological response of the body to any situation that is new, threatening, frightening, or exciting” (Hoeger & Hoeger, 2012). This stress is caused by a stressor, which is also known as “a stress-causing event” (Hoeger & Hoeger, 2012). Stressors can take all different forms, from moving to a new town, having a baby, or even writing a paper (Boyd, Wood, & Wood, 2011). One major stressor in life can be going to college. If not coped with properly, these stressors can leave a person with too much stress that could end up harming them mentally and physically, such as developing an illness (Boyd, Wood, & Wood, 2011). There are several ways to cope with stress. Some healthy ways to cope with stress would be practicing emotion-focused coping, building time-management techniques, and practicing meditation.
Stress is defined as “any circumstances that threaten or are perceived to threaten one’s well-being and thereby tax one’s coping abilities” (Weiten & Lloyd, 2006, p. 72). Stress is a natural event that exists literally in all areas of one’s life. It can be embedded in the environment, culture, or perception of an event or idea. Stress is a constant burden, and can be detrimental to one’s physical and mental health. However stress can also provide beneficial effects; it can satisfy one’s need for stimulation and challenge, promote personal growth, and can provide an individual with the tools to cope with, and be less affected by tomorrow’s stress (Weiten & Lloyd, 2006, p. 93).

Stress is defined in the dictionary as “state of mental tension and worry caused by problems in your life”. Everyone encounters stress in their life caused by many different variables in life and we all cope with in different ways. The way one copes with the stress is how it can affect our body. Some take to working out, eating healthy, take breaks from what is stressing you out and getting plenty of sleep which are good ways to cope with it. Some take to other coping mechanisms that are not very great for the body. Some examples are stress eating, abuse of drugs and alcohol, bottling up the stress, and depression. These bad methods can cause serious damage to one’s health on the body.
Stress has various effects on the body, both psychological and physiological. Stress can have positive effects on the body and can be beneficial, but frequent stress will eventually cause negative effects on the body.
Stress can be defined as the action by which we distinguish and react to certain events, which we assess as dangerous or stimulating. A momentary stress can mobilize your immune system to fend off infection and heal a wound. (Segerstrom, 2007) Dealing with extreme stress can be detrimental to one’s health. Throughout life, there may be different situations that can cause stress, such as a divorce, or an unexpected death. The circumstances of our lives flow through a psychological filter, and how we assess an event will directly influence how much stress we experience. Since stress cannot be avoided, we must find a way to cope with it. By coping with the stressors in life, you may be able to lead a healthier and happier life.
Stress is not something to be avoided. Everyone feels stressed from time to time and it depends on people that may feel stress in different ways. Not all stress is bad but it depends on how peoples take it. The words “stress” is something all of us have experienced but it seems that there are many different definitions used by psychologist, medics, management consultants or others. Psychologists describe stress as “demands of life” which pointed out as “stressors” and stress is the cause of the worn out tissue of our body (Meenakshisundaram, 2012, p.101). Stress can be divided into four types which are eustress, acute stress, episodic acute stress and chronic stress (illustrated in Figure 1).

Stress starts to occur when we become worried about a task or responsibilities we face. Major stress is called chronic stress. It can cause symptoms that can affect your health in a larger way. Some people may say that they succeed more under stress, but sadly, that’s rarely the case. Research has shown that "stress makes a person more likely to make mistakes" (Stress Symptoms, Signs, & Causes). For most people, stress is extremely normal for them that they don 't see it as anything but ordinary. However, stress can motivate someone while under pressure and even get you through a tough or dangerous
Stress is something that can't be avoided and it isn't possible to eliminate it from our lives. There are a lot of everyday factors that contribute to our stress level such as paying bills and running errands. There are also many bigger pressures in life that people don't necessarily deal with on daily basis, for example; divorce, death of a loved one, getting fired etc. People can create their stress by putting things off to the very last minute. To identify your own sources of stress you must examine your life and habits.
Modern life is full of troubles, frustrations and deadlines. People have to suffer stressful from many directions and they seem to be consent to live with stress. Many people think that they can stand with stressful and it is harmless, but it is not. If people live in stress during a long period of time, it has bad effect to health and spirit. Therefore, there is actually that you can protect yourself by understanding stress and how to reduce these harmful effects caused by stress.
