Strategic Planning
Strategic planning should be a “purposeful process that utilizes the core values, missions, and goals of a school system to establish articulate action plans to achieve organizational objectives” (Marin & Leinbach, 2014). This healthy view of strategic planning is what all schools should strive for. However, sometimes strategic planning can be seen as just another hoop that has to be jumped through in order to get through the year.
Developing a Strategic Plan
This information was gathered in an interview with Andrea Williams, principal of Theresa Bunker Elementary School. Mrs. Williams first shared with me that developing a strategic plan in this state is done with a goal for the school to achieve over the whole school year in order to be in compliance with state regulations. The district offers support to the schools in completing these strategic plans. This is more of a systems approach to developing strategic plans for each school in the district. The state provided a tool for developing plans which was not very user friendly. In order to meet the specific needs of the district and each school, the Director of Federal Programs at the district office developed a form or template that was disseminated out to each school. This form helped to streamline the development of a strategic plan as well as to make it more relevant to the needs of the schools.

The steps involved in the process of making a strategic plan for the school in the district begins first with the district infrastructure receiving information about the requirements from the state department of education. ...planning process more relevant for teachers, parents, and students there needs to be a better understanding of what this process is. In the reading for this assignment it stated that some teachers view strategic planning as “something done to them rather than with them” (Marin & Leinbach, 2014). There is not much buy-in or ownership in the strategic planning process how it is being implemented in this state currently. This is an area for improvement in the developing of strategic planning. There needs to be more dialogue between the administration and the faculty about what the plan actually is, how it is developed and who executes it. It is much more effective when teachers know why they are doing the work and feel more involved in the process. There is a need for a shift in the thinking about strategic planning at all levels involved (Marin & Leinbach, 2014).
Background Information In implementing a strategic plan for Coastal Medical Center, our consulting team has conducted many analyses and formed numerous strategies in order for Coastal Medical Center to be successful. Such assessments include an internal analysis, external analysis, gap analysis, and SWOT analysis. In conducting these analyses, our consulting team was able to better understand the internal environment, external environment, where the organization currently stands in terms of performance, and the major strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that oppose the Coastal Medical Center. From our inquiry, we will be able to establish a strategic plan that best fits the organization’s needs.
Connecting people to the success of the district is one matter, but asking them to support it financially is another. The district is growing in size and is in need of new facilities and internal academic structures to support the growth. As the district continues to grow she is challenged with ensuring that the schools continue to interact with each other and do not return to the independent silos they were when she arrived. After analyzing the Coastal Medical Center, it is apparent that the employees and staff have no conception of the mission, vision, and values of this health care facility. In addition to this lack of structure, CMC has many projects in the midst of production that lack support of a common goal, employees are unsatisfied with their jobs, the two boards lack ability to agree on strategic decisions for the organization,, and the medical center has a dismal reputation when it comes to quality care.

Assessing the environment is the second part of step four in the strategic planning process. The organizational internal assessment is important in identifying the strengths and weaknesses of Brendel Elementary School. By providing an organizational assessment, the planning team can clarify the aspects that help in accomplish the mission and fulfill the mandates in the organization. This part of step four enriches the management information system (MIS) with more qualitative data in order to make MIS more effective. An effective school leader possesses skills to create, implement, evaluate, improve and share a staff development plan. I met with Ben Rhodes, Sandy Creek Middle School’s principal, to interview him on the specific elements of his yearly staff development plan. We began with the design process focusing on the district and school goals. District goals include improving literacy across the content areas in reading and writing, Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum (GVC). Guaranteed and Viable Technology (GVT), and Closing the Achievement Gap (Equity in Excellence). Using a variety of assessments to focus on specific needs, Ben Rhodes and Mary Sonya, our Pupil Achievement Specialist, examined CSAP, Explore, MAP, and RAD data. They use the Colorado Growth Model to help guide them to determine if students have made adequate yearly progress. Together, they created the plan that included the district goals mentioned above as well as continuing to include new technology skills, information on special education changes with Response to Intervention (RTI), maintaining current staff implementation of literacy goals and a new goal of raising achievement in math.
Strategic planning did nothing but hinder Youth Haven from making more profit, keeping investors happy, and staying on mission. It was not the best management technique for Youth Haven. Since they had a deficit of $20,000, I believe they should not have outsourced to a third-party for a fee. Because of this their funding continued to get increasingly tighter. They still had a deficit and if they can not keep their investors happy, they are going to leave too. Strategic planning should be used as a stepping stool used to evaluate company policy and mission retention. Strategic planning was not used wisely within this organization. New businesses will take longer to thrive with the United States falling economy. The faltering job market and the deepening slump in housing threaten to hurt consumer spending. Consumers are becoming more conscious of their spending and therefore using cash to pay for smaller necessary purchases. The cost of entertainment and other presumed luxuries may be pushed to the background by most families, when having to choose whether to pay for a bill or treat the family out. Thriving businesses will understand the need to provide a service or product at affordable prices.
Reading this article was as painful as getting teeth pulled. The article was a professor's review of a class he instructed at the University of Chicago on strategic planning. The class was not conducted in a typical class format, but instead had students actively involved in groups that gathered data, analyzed, critiqued, and prepared strategic plans for area businesses who volunteered their records time and employees for such scrutiny. Much of the article was focused on the first class session, which from the sounds of it was quite hectic. After reading the assigned text the class as a whole determined 8 steps of which their models would be based on.
If asked what strategic planning is one could interpret it as simply a road map that can guide the organization in the right direction. It is very unlikely that an organization would know which direction to take without a sense of direction. Managers are faced every day with decisions that have a major impact on the direction the organization must take, therefore, strategic planning can play an important role in guiding managers in the right direction. In other words strategic planning is a tool that management can use to give them a sense of direction that will guide them in doing a better job and to ensure that all the members of the organization are working toward the same goals

Strategic planning implies establishing in advance what an individual or organization wants to achieve within a specified timeframe and deriving ways on how to achieve that. A strategic plan is basically a course of action that is used to attain desired results. It means anticipating the future and having measures on how to grow into the future. Technology is a macroeconomic factor that is rapidly growing and changing. Technology has had positive effects all over across the globe to business organization and to individuals.
Strategic Planning is looking at where you are now, knowing where you want to be in the future and planning the steps to get you there.
Strategic planning is the continuous and systematic process of guiding members of an organization to make decisions about its future, develop the necessary procedures and operations to achieve that future, and determine how success will be achieved.
