Stereotyping: Nature of the Beast

. There are hundreds of behavior patterns that are considered stereotyping. In all reality it is our perception of others based on typical behavior. It is human nature for everyone to pass judgment and to categorize one another. As humans we need to continuously learn to thrive and embrace the changes of life around us. Even though stereotypes will always be around, knowing what to expect and how to react to them effectively will ensure a better form of stereotyping for future generations (Ann, 2010).

Stereotypes will always be present in American culture and its people. Knowing what to expect and how to react to them effectively will ensure a better form of stereotyping for future generations (Ann, 2010). Studies have shown that we, as humans, subconsciously categorize those around us based on how one looks, acts, and speaks. There are two theories about stereotyping and they are in complete opposition. On the one hand there is the human being, controlled by unconscious actions of the brain, and on the other hand they are responsible for their behaviour with the ability to control themselves (Billig,1999).

It is possible, that in reality, stereotyping lies somewhere between conscious and unconscious behavior. Studies have proved that people often think in categories. This implies that they will always measure other humans in some way to simplify thinking (Billig,1999). Creating oversimplified ways of thinking within ourselves has been detrimental throughout history. Today this negative impact has effected and targeted youth.

Prejudgments have devastating effects upon teenagers (Buchanan, 2009). Many of these misconceptions are the instigating cause of suicide, peer pressure, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, depression, r...

...ut we can always make a joke and laugh. The beauty of life is being able to express ourselves through the way we dress, talk, and act. Try not to think so much on the negative and lean toward humor in every aspect. Look around yourself, look at the differences in one another, and embrace love and laughter because this is life before your eyes.
