Statement of Purpose for University of Oxford

Life can be so short and shallow, sometimes it requires a tragedy to evoke us of what is truly crucial in life. Eight years ago my cousin died after suffering a severe asthma attack. I was so melancholy when thinking about all the life experiences that he will being missed by taken at such a youngish age, and what a loss this was for the whole society to never be aware of what good or contribution he could have achieved, if given time. Breathe in the future, breathe out the past. I realised that the fact of his end is not a nightmare. It is a wake-up call that blares for the current healthcare technology and innovation insufficiency, in meeting the medical and societal challenges.

My cousin has always been my inspiration, not only to go for my ambitions, but also ensure that my ambitions and goals will benefit others as well, as I am still alive and able. Since my childhood unleashed a lust to comprehend how things worked and why things happened; this soon flourished into a specific interest in biology and physics; and later Biomedical Engineering – Engineering for life. I have seen a glimpse of the kind of future I am aiming for in my existing employment as research assistant assisting medical doctor in breast cancer diagnosis, during my internship in hospital and my time working on final year project for vein graft surveillance programme in hospital. With the body of experiences I have built up during my undergraduate studies and afterward, I see a future career for myself in biomedical engineering. However, my curiosity and thirst for more understanding in this field remain unsatisfied, and I know that I have to earn a firm educational background upon which to consolidate my widespread as well as build my future practice.

Someone said that other people will know who you are by what you have done, but you know yourself who you are by what you are capable of doing. I always believe that a meaningful life means fully devoting ourselves to all that we can do, settling our goal high and working hard to reach that high. It’s better to look back on life and say, “I can’t believe I did that,” than to look back and say, “I wish I did that.” Ensconcing myself in British culture, intellectual environment, vigorous and break-through research at United Kingdom is the opportunity of a lifetime. I anxiously await the opportunity to building a solid educational foundation which I hope to constantly improve upon by staying abreast of any improvements in the field, at University of Oxford. I believe I can contribute and help University of Oxford reach even greater heights.
