Personal Statement
My passion in engineering and science is, in part, due to my Grandfather, who is the deputy director of one of the research institutions at the Chinese Academy of Science. Influenced by the atmosphere of scientific and intellectual conversation, I have been exposed to cutting edge technology my entire life. In particular, my interest in material science can be traced back to my explorations in civil engineering and mechanical engineering at Stony Brook. In my freshman and sophomore years, I was taking a lot of civil engineering and mechanical engineering courses, through which I discovered that the major breakthroughs in those fields were at the material level nowadays. As a student looking for my own contribution to make a difference, I steered myself towards a journey - to become a researcher in material science.
In preparation for this journey, I selected various courses at Stony Brook to cover the entire spectrum of material science. More specifically, in studying engineering chemistry, quantum mechanics, materials science I and II, I have prepared myself with solid foundations and basic scientific principles. I also took many advanced courses in material science with focus on research techniques, including thermodynamics of materials, and strength of materials. With extensive mathematics, physics and programming training, I felt comfortable in learning advanced materials. Meanwhile, I am versatile with technical tools, like C, Python, Solidworks, Matlab, LaTeX and Linux, which will assist me in dealing with both practical and research problems.

Professors affiliated to the Institute for NanoBioTechnology produces many interesting works in the interdisciplinary area between material and biomedical science, such as quantum dot tracking and I am interested in expanding my knowledge into the field.

Mark Miodownik is a professor at the University of London and the director of the Institute of Making his interest in materials science began at an early age as the result of a traumatic event. In the book Stuff Matters written by Miodownik, he explains how his interest in materials science began, and how “stuff” has changed civilizations throughout history. Stuff Matters is an interesting and enlightening non-fiction book describing how common materials such as steel, concrete, paper and glass have influenced civilization.
This inquisitive nature attracted me to the sciences throughout my school years and, in particular, to chemistry during my undergraduate years at college. I spent a significant portion of my junior and senior years conducting an honors research project under the guidance of Rob Geis Ph.D., Chairman of the department of chemistry. My research experience taught me not only how to form a carbon-carbon bond using transition metals, but more importantly how to properly obtain, process and analyze data in order to draw conclusions and formulate theories. ...

Nanotechnology, shortened to "nanotech", is the study of the control of matter on an atomic and molecular scale. Nano science and nanotechnology are recent, revolutionary development in Science and Engineering that are evolving at a very fast pace.[1,2] It is driven by the desire to fabricate materials with novel and improved properties that is likely to impact virtually all areas of the physical and chemical sciences, biological sciences and health sciences. The word ‘nano’ derives from the Greek word ‘nanos’, which means dwarf or extremely small and mathematically, a nanometer is a billionth of a meter or 10-9 m. Particles whose sizes fall in the size range of 1-100 nm is called a nano particles, whether it is dispersed in gaseous, liquid or solid medium. During my undergraduate career, I conducted research which resulted in a professional journal submission, maintained full time student status, earned exceptional grades, found time to serve as Psi Chi chapter President, and worked full time as a graphic designer and real estate agent. These accomplishments are a reflection of motivation, strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a deep commitment to quality performance. Based on research interests and my strong record of excellence, I am confident that I will be a productive student in your program.

There is a very famous maxim, “You can never be overdressed or overeducated.” I strongly believe in this quotation. My desire for knowledge was never ending. Machines fascinated me since my childhood. I always wondered what the mystery behind their functioning was. So I chose to study mechanical engineering. I learned many things about the machines, the more I learn about them through the research the more they enthralled me. I developed a strong interest towards manufacturing field when I started studying manufacturingtechnology in my 4th semester. I gradually fell in love with those processes. Though my college helped me to solve my enigma, my never ending crave for knowledgein manufacturing inclined me to study in your University which is the most promising academy for a student like me, where study and research go hand in hand. It is superfluous to mention, university of Hartford is the best place to learn manufacturing technology.
But I did have an interest in materials. However, mechanical engineering is a very broad field. Mechanical engineering has an area of specialization referred to as “Materials and Manufacturing” [4] It doesn’t focus so heavily on material development and design so much as material selection and the methods of manufacturing parts using those materials. For example, “How do you mass produce carbon fiber parts?” would be a problem that a mechanical engineer of this specialization might set out to solve. At this point I had also had some exposure to electrical engineering, through a Snap Electronics kit and obtaining my Amateur Radio License. Mechanical engineers do take some electrical engineering classes. This gives mechanical engineers an understanding of electrical control systems and electric motors [5], both of which play important roles in machinery

An ambition to learn and grow and having passion for engineering have prompted me to go in for graduate studies. Chasing my Dreams! While growing up at a young age I was always intrigued by objects that produced mechanical work and energy be it prime movers such as automobiles, construction and mining equipment, turbo machinery such as jet engines, space shuttles or complex mechanisms of mechanical watches, I used to spend a lot of time trying to learn and figure out their basis and propositions, it was necessary for me to explore my inner conscience to understand my fascination towards machines and their ingenuity, Mechanical engineering seemed a direct consequence of my convictions. I have always admired my father as a civil engineer and his hard work and struggles throughout his life; He has always been a role model for me. He motivated me to pursue my dreams so I decided to pursue my undergraduate study in Mechanical Engineering
Throughout my school career I have always loved chemistry. In Chemistry there was always a sense that there was more, there was always something new and exciting to be discovered and theories to be proven (or even disproven). Chemistry was the main subject with a real practical aspect to it during school and it is this, along with my genuine fascination with the subject, which fuels my desire to study it further.
This chapter discussed the reflection on the project and the wider implications of the project, and demonstrated the reflection on the MA experience. In a word, the major project and the MA experience gave me an extraordinary chance to carry on the higher education and learn new and advanced learning skills.
