Gerard Manley Hopkins Gerard Manley Hopkins is a reflection of his time period because his work represents realism, his work was different from what was expected, and his work had to do with religion. Although Hopkins is considered as one of the great poets of the past, he was not that appreciated during his time period. The only reason that we have his work today is because his friends held on to his work after his death and decided to publish it for him in 1918. Hopkins age was defined by the change from romanticism to realism. This was a slow change but it was one that was greatly needed by Hopkins. His work was not very well liked by people because it was about things that were against the church (Bloom p.90). During his time this was a big mistake, but in the same sense this portrayed realism to its fullest. Although some of Hopkins’ poems seem disturbing, they are actually excellent pieces of work. He portrayed realism by only writing about things that were realistic to him and his society. People did not accept Hopkins’ poetry because they did not like him; they did not accept it because it went against everything they believed in. The church was the most important thing in peoples’ lives during this era and most of Hopkins’ work were about things that went against the church and its beliefs. Even though people did not accept his poems during his time, they are very well accepted now and are considered masterpieces of his era. Hopkins’ work was ve...
Writing poetry can be a long and relentless task. There are several points that may arouse concerns when an author writes poems. One of those concerns would be criticism. In the world of literary arts, criticism can be found everywhere. The individual does not have to be a scholar, in order to be a critic. Critics surround authors in many different directions, and they are among a diverse group. These facts alone would be a reason for authors to be very skeptical of their works. Moreover, that reason alone would cause an author to be very protective of the use of such works. Authors tend to have concerns about cultural views as well. Culture values were at a very high peak during Anne Bradstreet’s time. Those specific concerns can very easily peak an author’s insecurities. Anne Bradstreet exemplified insecure thoughts towards her poetry because of society and the culture of the 1600s. Bradstreet’s insecurities made her a target among the male writers. During her time, women were not common
When you read his works, you think to yourself “He must have been in a really dark place in his life in to have written this”, well he was. Instead of turning all of these horrific moments into negatives, he turned them into positives with poems and short stories. With his use of advanced vocabulary and detail you have to be somewhat mature and dig deep to uncover the true meanings and understand it completely. It challenges you to push yourself into more in depth things. As you read the poems s...
Sex Education is essentially the teachings of human sexuality in regards to sexual anatomy, reproduction, intercourse and behaviors associated. Learning about these aspects is important to adolescent development as it is a natural part of life. One way children learn about this is through school or somewhere in their community such as an after school program. Though it seems like an obvious lesson to learn, children have a difficult time getting this information from any source other than an organized curriculum in their health class at school. This is somewhat understandable as it can be very uncomfortable for parents and guardians to discuss these intimate details with their innocent child but it has the potential to cause problems later in the adolescent’s life. Brewin’s article addresses the parental concern that sex education may actually stir sexual desires and behaviors in the children that were not present before (Brewin.) However, curiosity comes about naturally and if it is met with over-protectiveness and suspicion from parents then the child has no other choice but to get the facts from another source which could possibly be firsthand experience.
Poetry is a versatile avenue from which waves or ripples can be made potentially. A writer of poetry has the ability to make their readers feel a while wide array of emotions and situations synonymous with the human condition. I, at first, was completely turned off to the idea of poetry at first because all I was exposed to early on by way of poetry were bland professions of love or lust or seemingly simple poems I was forced to process down to a fine word paste. Edgar Allan Poe was interesting, but it was a tad bit dry to me. But, after reading poems the Harlem Renaissance gave me a bit of hope for poetry. To me, the poetry written during that time period has a certain allure to it. They have serious depth and meaning that I, myself and empathize
... different authors from two different ways of life could write poems in different styles about the same topics. Hughes with his blues infused poems and Cullen's with his "Negro spirit and Christian upbringing" (Ferguson), both of these men inspired hundreds of people and their work can still make an impact on those that read it. It sure did for me. I recommend these poems to anyone, and I hope that everyone can enjoy and appreciate them as much as I have.
Both Romantics and Modernists felt loss of authority, either from man or man's religious following. Poetry changed what it focused on as those figures lost respect or importance in the public's lives. I believe Yeats sums up my point partially in lines 19 and 20, "That twenty centuries of stony sleep/ Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle.
Sex education has been an ongoing debate for decades. In the early 1970’s, twenty states voted restricting sex education from the school curriculum, leaving the District of Columbia and only three states (Maryland, Kentucky, New Jersey), requiring schools to teach sex education. By the mid 1980’s, a deadly disease permitted through sexual intercourse was recognized; the fear of catching a disease sex education quickly became accepted. In 1986, Surgeon General C. Everett Koop felt sex education should start as early as third grade stating, ‘“There is now no doubt … that we need sex education in schools and that it [should] include information on heterosexual and homosexual relationships. The lives of our young people depend on our fulfilling our responsibility”’ (qtd. in Donovan). December 1997, the District of Columbia and nineteen states provided sex education in school. Sex education covers a range of topics and concerns about safe sex, abstinence, gender, development and human growth, human reproduction, sexual anatomy and physiology, pregnancy, relationships, body image, sexual attitudes, value and morals, sexual behavior, sexual health, sexual orientation, and sexual pleasure. Parents and religious groups believe abstinence should only be taught in school. The teaching of sex education, to many, only encourages student to engage in sexual activity, and for that the parent should only teach reason if they choose to do so. Sex education provides information and answer questions for students whom are scared or shy to ask a parent. Information provided for students in this course will help decrease pregnancy, and disease, provide information and help for any situation; and change the mind of some students about having sex. Sex ...
As human beings we all know that sex is a big part of our lives. It is how we reproduce. Unlike generations in the past, sex is more openly discussed today than ever before. Advertisements, media, newspapers, and celebrities are all promoting sex. In short, most teens become sexually active in high school. They can`t seem to get enough of sex and it definitely inquires our minds, increasing our adrenaline and paralyzing our initial sense. Once you hit puberty your senses are aroused and you began to become very curious. How young is too young to know about sex, or to engage in sex? For my research paper I wanted to go into more detail about sex education being taught in schools and by parents. Who does the responsibility fall under? Should it be taught at home by parents or at school by teachers? Parents attempts at sexual education leaves teenagers curious, misinformed and more at risk to find themselves facing the reality of disease and unplanned pregnancies. Therefore, sex education should remain a part of middle and high school public education curriculums.
Comprehensive sex education should be taught in public schools. The youth of today cannot make educated decisions regarding sex if they are not properly educated. Not educating America’s youth in all aspects of sex education is comparable to allowing them to drive without being taught. This choice of not allowing comprehensive sex education is schools is dangerous and can have life long consequences. These consequences will not only affect the individual but can ultimately affect America. It is vital for Americans to begin giving their youth the education that is needed.
In order to define romantic poetry on must look towards Bronte and Hemans male contemporaries at the time since their works influenced many other writers of that time. William Wordsworth and Coleridge both wrote criticisms on what made a good poet and what factors made up good poetry. In Biographia Literaria, Coleridge defines the poet and poetry. He sees a "distinction from the poetic genius itself which sustains and modifies images of the own mind " (Coleridge). He believes in the power of exciting of the reader by using new "colours of imagination " to adhere to the truth of nature. In the Preface to Lyrical Ballads, Wordsworth describes the principal object of poetry to make the incidents of common life interesting by tracing our nature. He wanted to use "the beautiful forms of nature" to write simplistically so that many could understand it. He attributes great poetry to a certain type of person: "For all good poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings; but though this be true, Poems to which any value can be attached, were never produced on any variety of subjects but a man who being possessed of more than usual organic sensibility had also thought...
How exactly does music have the ability to positively affect the mind? It is a question that is rarely contemplated. The beneficial influences that harmonies, instruments, and other musical forms possess on the mind are not widely acknowledged. Few have the capability to comprehend the importance of a simple rhythm and what it can accomplish. The emotional state, concentration, and memory are just a few of the many aspects of the mind that can be effectively altered by music.
When Lady Macbeth says “Out damned spot! Out I say...here’s the smell of blood still” (5.1.34-39), that scene shows the reader that Lady Macbeth has an internal problem that can’t be held inside of her any longer. The guilt of having King Duncan’s blood on her hands manifested itself into her, and came out of her at night when she was sleep walking (Diehl 195-197). These examples of symbolism in Macbeth gives the literature smooth flow and the play keeps the reader constantly interested and always trying to figure out the deeper meanings behind the
Sex education should not be explained as a chapter in human biology, neither should it be treated as if it is or could be, value-free. Education for interposed relations, family life, and intimacy should be taught in all public schools. The programs should include conversation on human nature, and an examination of human beings as social individuals who find deep satisfaction. To increase long and healthier lives when they are apart of long-lasting social relationships, that have inspirational needs for meanings and moral standards.
In late 18th century Europe an artistic movement, which would later be identified as Romanticism, was taking root. Europe was experiencing several changes in terms of revolution, war, economics, and threats to their social structure (Norton 2). These changes sparked many writers to shift their literary focus towards a style that emphasized the glorification of the ordinary, spontaneity, the personal “I” of individuality, Nature as a living being, and an interest in the supernatural and exotic. One such writer was William Wordsworth. Born in 1770, his writing career began to take hold in the peak of this literary period. He would later become one of the most quintessential examples of a Romantic author. Writing poetry that focused on the spontaneous overflow of emotions and accentuated his love of the natural world, Wordsworth created a style that would become a basis for both criticism and comparison for years to come. Two poems that seem to emphasize the ideal qualities of Wordsworth’s work are Expostulation and Reply and The Tables Turned, both published in 1798 as components of Lyrical Ballads. According to Wordsworth, the two pieces originated in a conversation with a friend that resulted in a bit of a debate over differences in learning styles (Norton 250).
In recent years, whether teenage children and younger are having sex has become a huge issue, a very serious issue but also taboo to talk about. This issue is easily looked at as out of control, because it hurts the vision of the younger generation. To prevent the issue as a problem, sex education is strongly needed in the education system. Sex education would inform the teenage and younger children everything they need to know about sex. Sex education would also include other sensitive issues like sexual health, sexual reproduction, sexuality and others that parents may often feel uncomfortable talking about with their children. Therefore, with sex education in schools it becomes the responsibility of schools to address this issue, and inform
