So, on a sunny spring day, go fish out a few bucks from your laundry, beg for change, do whatever you have to--these cheap sweets are worth it--and they're all less than five minutes away.

Step inside the chipped red door to the ding of an authentic Swiss bell. You probably wouldn't want to show up at Soho wearing college sweats, even if they're clean--it's more like an upscale restaurant (read: not like your cafeteria). Even so, it's not hard to find a tasty dessert for under six dollars--plus a little cash for a tip, as you'll have a waiter. Try a slice of classic, creamy cheesecake ($5.95) or a tempting, moist slice of 24 Karrat Cake ($5.95)--three layers interposed with cream cheese icing. The most impressive of all deserts here, however, is the Caramel Granny (which doesn't show up on the website menu, by the way): fresh sliced granny apples baked in a buttery caramel toffee sauce and lined with a flaky sourdough crust. And of course, it's served warm, with a melting scoop of vanilla Haagen Daaz ice cream. Yes, it's only $5.95. Looks like even college students can have their cake, and eat, it too--all for under $6.

Probably some of the most pleasurable and enjoyable memories of a person has to do with sweets. When thinking back to birthdays, there is always the memory of the wonderful cake that mother beautifully made and decorated with frosting and glazes. A typical night out with dad can be transformed into a magical evening with a trip to the ice cream parlor. The end of a fantastic Thanksgiving dinner turns heavenly when a hot apple pie is brought to the table and topped with delicious, melting vanilla ice cream. A good wedding is never complete without the cutting of the splendid multi-level wedding cake, when the happy new couple gets to playfully shove and smear cake and white frosting into each other’s smiling faces. Everyone knows that as a child, the only good part about going to the dentist is getting the candy bar at the end of the visit. Why do some people get sick after eating too much suger? Some people do not even know that the abuse of sugar can lead to negative effects on your body. There is something strangely enjoyable and resplendent about the consumption of sugar. Why is it that sugar is so deliciously enjoyable and at the same time a food product that has many negative affects on people’s health?
With such an obsession with sweet foods, there is an obvious desire for an explanation of how such a once unknown substance took center stage on everybody's snack, dessert, and candy list. That's where Sidney W. Mintz comes into play. He decided to write this book Sweetness and Power, and from the looks of all the sources he used to substantiate his ideas and data, it seems that he is not the first person to find the role that sugar plays in modern society important. By analyzing who Mintz's audience is meant to be, what goals he has in writing this book, what structure his book incorporates, what type, or types, of history he represents within the book, what kind of sources he uses, and what important information and conclusions he presents, we can come to better understand Mintz's views and research of the role of sugar in history, and how much it really affects our lives as we know them.

First of all, students aren’t motivated to eat unhealthy, not-tasty food. If you observed students buying lunch in the cafeteria, you don’t often see them buying these kinds, but not limited to, foodstuffs: burritos (which are just beans wrapped in tortillas), “burgers” (meat slapped on two slices of bread), etc. Even the chicken nuggets aren’t very popular. And the prices! $3.75-$4.75 is not worth such “garbahge”, as a teacher would say. Out of the twenty five students I surveyed, 56% stated that they would like to see their cafeteria changed. ...d consumption, it is no surprise college students have trouble maintaining a healthy diet once they are on their own. Whether they struggle with overeating, consuming the more affordable but less nutritious junk food, or an eating disorder, they are harming their bodies in ways that may not be immediately apparent but are very likely to cause health problems later in life. In addition to this, eating too much of the wrong types of food or not eating at all can have a detrimental impact on schoolwork, social life, and general well being. With proper nutritional guidance and healthier options at campus dining spots, perhaps students would be able to have a better handle on managing their own health. Until all college campuses have these resources, poor eating habits will continue to be the most important, and most common, health issue that college students face today.
