Recommended: History of figure skating competition

Speed Skating has been around for a while now. This specific sport has many different techniquies, and skills. There is a lot more to skating then putting on shoes that have wheels and going on a wood floor skating around in circles. In 1863 James Plempton had the idea to actually invent part of the skate. After James had spent time inventing it, James had thought it would be necessary to add something more to the skate. James added what he liked to call the “Fire Rocket”, which able’s the skate to be able to turn. It only took James about 5 months to create what is called the fire rocket.

In the 1890's this is what happened to the sport of ice hockey. Suddenly the game was more than recreation and organization entered, rules were drawn and leagues were formed. With the new structure came segregation of the sexes. As the sport progressed for the men, the women were left behind. In spite of all this, the first all female organized game was played in Barrie, Ontario in 1892. Women's ice hockey slowly limped on up until the 1920's.

The Special Olympics, however, have found an effective method of preparing children, teens, and adults for society through sport. The diverse selection of sports, their rules, and physical demands, is an advantage when there is a huge range of disabilities. There is a program offered for almost everyone. People who benefit from these games range from the athletes themselves, the officials, coaches, caregivers, parents, to the spectators and on-site first aid staff. Mrs. Kennedy-Shriver said this in regard to special athletes, "through sports, they can realize their potential for growth." Over and over this fantastic organization has demonstrated integrity, good sportsmanship, and goal oriented programs that work!
