Sports Medicine is a medical field that specializes with physical fitness, treatment and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise. It was introduced around the early Greek and Roman era when the first modern Olympic Games took place. The Greek felt they could do something to help heal and prevent injuries that the athletes were receiving. Now in sports medicine, certain injuries can only be assessed and treated by specific physicians. These physicians can include physical therapists, athletic trainers, and strength and conditioning coaches. Although sports physicians are most commonly seen by athletes after they are hurt so they can be treated, there are some physicians that are seen before an injury occurs so that they can learn how to prevent injuries. In ancient Greece and ancient Rome, Herodicus first combined sports with health. He is the reason that people realized that exercise and a good diet help better our health. With these realizations, sports training and athletic competitions became very popular and led to the first Olympic Games that took place in Athens, Greece in 1896. These competitions made coaches and fans realize how important and needed it was to stretch and warm up before training events. They wanted to find ways to prevent injuries and also treat them immediately when they occurred during events. The phrase sports medicine was not thought of until the 1928 Olympics in Switzerland which was where the First International Congress of Sports Medicine had their first meeting and became an organization. Many times, they will conduct training camps, skill improvement courses, clinics, preseason workouts and tryouts, and training programs based on teams and individuals in specific sports. As with any sport, injuries occur quite frequently in the NBA. How these injuries are handled varies by team. Sometimes it is all about how serious it is and if it can get worse through playing through it. A lot of it is determined by how the player feels and how much the organization really wants and needs them on the court. Like if the team really needs a win or even just won’t accept the player to not play due to the crowd expecting them. Then if the player doesn't feel comfortable enough to play, like Andrew Bynum last year with his knee. Are injuries and recoveries ever truly handled appropriately by the players and the organizations? Circumstances determine whether or not injuries and recoveries are handled appropriately in the NBA.
The number of girls and women participating in all levels of sports has risen greatly in recent years, and the way they play has changed too. Women's sports used to be played by a slow defensive style. Today, the sports are played with speed, precision, and power. With these changes have come increased injuries, and female athletes have higher injury rates than men in many sports. Knee injuries have been rising in female sports. Anterior crutiate ligament (ACL) injuries have become the most common injury in the knee to female athletes. Females are four times more susceptible to injury then men.

Athletic Training plays a big role in the world today. Many people are on the go whether it is for sports or every day activities. Athletic Trainers can help with athletes of any age or industrial workers performing physical tasks or even an average citizen in recreational athletics. To achieve a degree in Athletic Training, there are many tasks and skills to be learned. The Education Council under the National Athletic Training Association put together an education program filled with a set of guidelines of what has to be taught to graduate with a degree in Athletic Training. Before you can learn and understand Athletic Training, you must know the Anatomy and Physiology of the human body. This includes bones, muscles, levels of organization, tissue levels, systems of the body, skeletal structure, articulations, integrative functions, sensory function, blood, and embryology (Martini, 2001). Besides Anatomy and Physiology, the methods of taping is also extremely critical to this career. Before you can understand what each taping techniques are used for, you must also know about sports injuries. Athletic Training is all about the prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and evaluation of athletic injuries. Another skill that must be learned in the Athletic Training Education Program is how to provide immediate emergency care. That includes everything from background information to actually being able to save an athlete’s or any one else’s life. High school and college athletes who have a history of concussion are 2 to 5.8 times more likely to experience another concussion compared to those who have no prior history of injury . Guskiewics et al. suggest that the increase of risk for another injury was higher during with the initial days after the first concussion. With repetitive exposure to concussions, the symptoms grow stronger each time. Although the symptoms disappear some time after the injury, symptoms can appear years later related to the damage done by the many concussions.

Athletes have a different mindset than others when it comes to injuries. The desire to return to activity as soon as possible often interferes with the athlete’s common sense. According to Charles Peebles, if an injury cannot actually be seen by the athlete, such as a stress fracture, the injury does not instill into their minds that they need to stop whatever sport or activity they are part of (Peebles). The physician and the athletic trainer must protect the athlete from injuring himself/herself further and sometimes that involves making the decision that the athlete must stop his/her sport for a given amount of time.
What is Sports Medicine? Well the word says it all; sports medicine is the study and practice of medicine related to the science of sports in the areas of diagnosing and treating sports injuries, injury prevention, and athletic training that includes workouts or exercises and nutrition. In other words, sports medicine is a field of medicine that concentrates exclusively on the injuries resulting from sports such as football, baseball, basketball, and other sports. There are many different kinds of sports injuries; therefore there have to be several kinds of orthopedics or specialists to treat patients according to their injuries. There are many sport medicine researchers that are working hard to find different ways to help all kinds of injuries. They also look for corporations that are willing to support the athletes and help out with the costs of sports medicine.
