Wherever you heard T.J Ford, you would always hear of his astounding and flashy plays. However, due to severe injuries, it resulted in the superstar’s retirement. Ford was a great player during his tenure in the NCAA and was already breaking records in his freshman year. Some of his accolades include the wooden player of the year at Texas when took his team the Texas Longhorns to the final four. Ford did achieve many accomplishments in the NBA, but not to his full potential has he had expected in college. Ford went through injuries throughout his NBA career such as his injured tailbone, which he gained during his rookie season and the injury that left him retired was his spinal injury. Even after months of the recovery, he was still feeling the after effects of the injury and had to take extra cautions. The injury to his tailbone caused Ford to be very injury prone, a minor injury could cause him to end career. The career ending injury would be a simple elbow to his back by Baron Davis the Knicks point guard. T.J. Ford stated that “If it's anybody else, it's just a regular play… But because of me and my condition, a simple elbow in my back has a different outcome than hitting some else in the back”. (1)
Spinal cord injuries are excruciating, emotional and physical for people who endure these damages. The spinal cord has countless nerves that run down the back and carry signals back and forth form the body to the brain. These injuries are usually caused by a blow or dislocation of a vertebra on or around the spinal cord. The spinal cord does not usually cut through the vertebrae, but the vertebrae pieces press down on the nerves, which causes a very sharp pain. Spinal cord injuries can be categorized into complete or incomplet...

... injury a person is at their weakest. With a regular quantity of certain foods, it will help the process continue at a balanced rate. People with spinal cord injuries have different protein, carbohydrate, and fat requirements and are required to lower their calorie intake since they would have a lower metabolic rate; protein should be increased to 1.5g per kg of body weight to help increase healing of wounds, and fats should be lowered because of the lower metabolic rates of spinal cord injured individual’s. The main point of good nutrition is to prevent future damage to the body and with good nutrition it helps lower the risk of multiple illnesses such as osteoporosis, diabetes, heart disease, and urinary tract infections. Lastly, rehabilitation helps with pain management by medication like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, narcotics, and strong pain killers.
What does Jovan Belcher, Ray Esterling and O.J. Murdock Have in common? They all were famous football players who commented suicide. Each player had something called chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE. This is a condition where sufferers have had repeated hits to the head that leads to concussions and ultimately head trauma. In this research paper, we will go over the data about the NFL to see could they have prevented CTE in these players if they had placed the player’s safety first.
For example, Paul George was faced with a gruesome leg injury. Many people believed that Paul would not be the player that he once was. However, after about a year of recovery, Paul was turning heads with his outstanding performance on the court. Now, Paul George is considered one of the best players in the league. Paul George worked twice as hard to come back from his hardship. In the end, all his hard work payed off as he came back twice as stronger.
In my paper I will talk about the basics of the injury, history of the UCL, ways to diagnose a UCL tear, and how to recover from Tommy John surgery, along with some unbelievable facts about this distressing injury. This injury and surgery has revolutionized baseball and prolonged the careers of many great players in the MLB. Tommy John surgery is a very serious injury, especially if you play baseball at a young age. If you’re young enough, it could easily end your career, but for most players they are usually out for close to a year plus. The injury results from the forceful motions involved in throwing a baseball.
Kids just want to have fun. In a bygone era, parents wanted kids to play sports for fun and camaraderie. However, a new attitude is developing among coaches and parents, which is mopping-up fun from youth sports. Now it's all about the team and the game. The team must win the game at any cost.
A. Background In recent years, there has been an increase in research investigating the long-term effects of repeated head trauma on the brain, especially in athletes. Following his discovery of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), Dr. Bennet Omalu inspired a movement of research aimed at establishing better safety standards and protocols in football. It was not until 2002 that the initial connection between repetitive head trauma, such as concussions, and brain injury was suspected (Ott, 2015). As common as concussions were during the late 1970s and 1980s, they were often swept under the rug, as they were seen as insignificant injuries.
Sports Medicine is a medical field that specializes with physical fitness, treatment and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise. It was introduced around the early Greek and Roman era when the first modern Olympic Games took place. The Greek felt they could do something to help heal and prevent injuries that the athletes were receiving. Now in sports medicine, certain injuries can only be assessed and treated by specific physicians. These physicians can include physical therapists, athletic trainers, and strength and conditioning coaches. Although sports physicians are most commonly seen by athletes after they are hurt so they can be treated, there are some physicians that are seen before an injury occurs so that they can learn how to prevent injuries.
The number of girls and women participating in all levels of sports has risen greatly in recent years, and the way they play has changed too. Women's sports used to be played by a slow defensive style. Today, the sports are played with speed, precision, and power. With these changes have come increased injuries, and female athletes have higher injury rates than men in many sports. Knee injuries have been rising in female sports. Anterior crutiate ligament (ACL) injuries have become the most common injury in the knee to female athletes. Females are four times more susceptible to injury then men.
One of the most common injuries in sports today is head injuries. Some of the major sports that head injuries occur in are hockey, football, and MMA due to the body contact between two players. Concussions cannot be detected through a CT scan or x-rays.
To concur with the first point, high school athletes receive more concussions than college players do. The National Research Council has determined that “High school athletes suffer concussions at nearly twice the rate of college players.” Although high schools take more action in keeping their players safe it is still dangerous for high schoolers who are in these contact sports. Despite the fact that there are impact test for athletes to take, it still will not keep them safe from obtaining a concussion. Because high school athletes receive more head injuries than college players, it raises the question of should athletes only be able to have one concussion before they have to stop participating in contact sports?
warm) in the left upper and lower extremities; decreased strength and movement of the right upper and lower extremities and of the left abdominal muscles; lack of triceps and biceps reflexes in the right upper extremity; atypical response of patellar, Achilles (hyper) reflexes in the right lower extremity; abnormal cremasteric reflex in the right groin; fracture in cervical vertebrae #7; and significant swelling in the C7-T12 region of the spinal canal (Signs and symptoms, n.d.). The objective complaint of a severe headache could also be consistent with a spinal cord injury (Headache, nausea, and vomiting,
The spinal cord is a major channel in the body where motor and sensory information travels from the brain to the body. It has white matter that surrounds a central gray matter. The gray matter is where most of the neuronal cells are located. Injury to the spinal cord will affect the conduction of information across any part of the spinal cord where the damage is located (Maynard et al., 1997). This will often result in permanent disability of a certain muscle or region of the body (Meletis et al., 2008) and a loss of tissue where the damage is located (Peng et al., 2009). As of now, there is no treatment for spinal cord injury expect for steroids. All steroids can do is provide protect of the spinal cord from secondary injury for specific patients (Peng et al., 2009).
It happens all too often, athletes are coming home complaining of dizziness, confusion, and a headache. “More than 1.6 million Americans suffer a sports-related concussion every year, and a growing number occur among high school and college athletes” (O’connor).

In John Feinstein’s Foul Trouble, Danny, a basketball player, experiences the tough NCAA restrictions. Terell and Danny were on their way to the most elite showcase basketball camp in the country. They arrive at the camp and make their way inside. All kinds of diverse reporters and television hosts swarmed Terrell. Danny was feeling as if he does not belong there. He walked into the building and sat on the bleachers. The whole place was teeming with college coaches. Danny could not wait to start the camp games. Coach Wilcox, Danny’s father, was also very eager.
The sheer energy of a gymnast alone can be felt by audiences of all ages, but what the spectators lack the ability to feel is the pounding of the bodies that bear the impact of the athletes in action. Gymnastics consists of a mixture of acrobatic performances of four different events for females, and six different events for males (Gianoulis 1). Gymnastics is demanding in a multitude of ways, including: physically, emotionally and mentally. It requires countless hours of dedication. The concerns of most gymnasts are moving up to the next level, or getting a more advanced skill, while the concerns of the doctors, coaches, and parents revolve mostly around the athlete’s health, which is put at stake for the adored yet dangerous sport. Injuries are common among both male and female gymnast alike, but due to the fact a female gymnast’s career peaks at the same time of major growth and development, a female gymnast’s body as a whole is more likely to undergo lifelong changes or affects (Gianoulis 2). Among the injuries of the mind blowing athletes, the most common ones affect the ankles, feet, lower back, wrist, and hands of individuals (Prevention and Treatment 1). From sprains, to the breaks, the intriguing sport of gymnastics is physically demanding on a gymnast’s body.
