Civil Disobedience
After reading both articles "Silence Killing Your Company?" and "Civil Disobedience I have come to many conclusions in respect to silencing one's self in the face of authority. It is very important to me that when I am faced with a situation that I express myself fully and to the extent that I may be shunned from the group. In many situations people find it hard to speak up when they have a voice to be heard and in many of these situations they are correct in doing so. Disagreements within an organization can cost the company money and time when disagreeing about petty matters. However, when faced with an issue of importance or someone's moral values it is important for that person to speak up. Today in society there

As stated in the article "Silence Killing Your Company", you should know when to "zip it". Often times people are just controversial people and love to challenge authority in any way that they can. If an issue that you want to bring up has no direct effect on the work that you are performing, then you should rethink your decision to speak up. Also if you are spending too much time arguing issues than resolving them you should rethink your arguments to decide if they are actually worth speaking up for. There is also like the article suggests a time and a place for certain arguments. Everyone should confront their differences but sometimes there is a time and place to address certain issues. For examples criticizing something that your superior does, in public, may be a bad idea that can hurt your career or your …show more content…
As the author of "Silence Killing Your Company", points out it is very costly not to speak out. If your place of business has you doing something illegal that you morally object to however continue to do. You may be held legally responsible for your actions. As in the case with Enron, many people whom were just following orders and refused to speak out about the problems within the company, cost themselves time in jail. They never spoke out therefore they were held responsible for their actions. In this case I believe it is important to rise up and let your voice be heard to defend yourself and those hurt by the actions taken by your superiors. Not only did the scandal cost the upper level management their freedom but it cost hundreds of people their life savings and their jobs. If someone had spoken out these innocent people would have wonderful retirements ahead of them instead of working until the day they
There is much strength associated with both speech and silence. One can use either to their advantage in a power struggle. In the book One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Randle Patrick McMurphy and Nurse Ratched employ the power of speech and Chief Bromden uses the power of silence until the end of the novel when he gains the power of speech. These cases prove that the greatest power is not held in speech or silence alone, but in the effective combination of the two.
Insincere diversity initiatives are unsurprisingly ineffective as employees and consumers carefully observe enterprise activity, easily spotting insincerity. Modern enterprises are increasingly previously closed-minded corporate cultures , because ultimately, a firm’s engagement with this community defines its brand identity of industry partners, employees and communities as a universal community. .
Organizational diversity is a vital attribute causing rapidly growing controversial debates in today’s public and private business sectors. Many of the adversarial perspectives regarding organizational diversity have manifested in various organizations due to the implementation of laws, sanctions, programs and other initiatives designed and mandated to create a more equalized employment workforce.
The chapter’s discussion of discrimination in the workplace is a frequently occurring ethical issue in today’s business environment. There have been many laws and regulations passed to help promote equality in the workplace, yet even in today’s day and age we still struggle to abolish all forms of discrimination. Discrimination comes in many forms including, disability, race, religion, and sex to name some of the most prevalent issues. Because proving discrimination in the workplace can be difficult sometimes, employees can be put in a strenuous position depending on the leadership of the company and support of company culture.
Schein in his book “Organizational Culture and Leadership” explains how different believes and behaviors start to be logical when we understand their cultures by stating “When we learn to see the world through cultural lenses, all kinds of things begin to make sense that initially were mysterious, frustrating, or seemingly stupid” (2010, p. 13). This kind of foresight should be the starting point in order to manage the tremendously growing diversity in the workforce nowadays. Leaders and administrators of both public and private organizations through their influence are responsible to promote and manage diversity in an ethical manner.
Gender, racial, and ethnic diversity means different things to different people. Some believe that diversity is about quotas, and affirmative action. Others believe that diversity is something that will happen on its own with out intervention. Some experts who study diversity, however, believe that diversity is not something that should be left up to chance. It is important, therefore, for organizations to take action to encourage and foster diversity in the workplace (Clarke, 1995, p. 13).
The impact of diversity in the workplace is contingent upon several factors. Across companies diversified workforces are becoming increasingly common. To successfully manage a diverse workforce, organizations are ensuring that employees understand how their values and stereotypes influence their behavior toward others of different gender, ethnic, racial, or religious backgrounds; are gaining an appreciation of cultural differences among themselves; and behaviors that isolate or intimidate minorities are being improved (Noe et al., 2010, pg. 302).
Public communication is very important when in a discussion with coworkers and such. The one weakness that some people run into is silence. The spiral of silence theory by Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann explains why certain people fall under the pressure and seclude to silence. Silence may not always be a bad thing, but according to a study by Lucy J. MacGregor, the fact is that silence during a speech or conversation is absolutely bad. With this, silence while talking to a large group negatively affects the listeners in a way in which some words in the speech will not be remembered. The point is that silence tends to destroy people’s speeches. Words are forgotten in the speech; Loss of the attention by the listeners happens and the listeners noticing that the speaker is just trying to delay the speech. As novelist Margaret Atwood has once said “A voice is a human gift; it should be cherished and used, to utter fully human speech as possible. Powerlessness and silence go together.”
This part of the statement is too absolute. Silence can be beneficial. There needs to be active movements against evils. Martin Luther King Jr. was not known for his silence. This statement says it is better sit in silence than to attack the evils of the world. By speaking out things can happen. It is better to be known in your lifetime than to be like Emily Dickinson and have all your works published posthumously. The benefits of speaking outweigh anything. It may be true that actions speak louder than words, but the action requires communication. Communication is the base of any action even in a revenge plot. In the novel, the count had to establish himself in the aristocratic community in Paris before he could enact his revenge plot of tearing people apart from the inside out. Though there can be excess talking leading to useless rambling, it is better to communicate to solve the evils of the world than to sit in silence.

Diversity is all around us and how organizations deal with the notion of diversity can be complex and quite diverse. We know that being diverse in the workplace is important to the organization's success, should be recognized, accepted, and embraced. It’s how the organizations live up to what they believe in and must go above and beyond legal compliance and requirements to promoting diversity and inclusion. Otherwise, employees may view the organization's vision and policies as lip service and only be tolerant of diversity because the organization said so.
Diversity issues will gain importance because of the effective interactions and communications between the people. Diversity is the reality of the business world. It can have negative and positive impact on the employee’s behaviour towards work and work results. This also depends on how the employees have understood it and grasps it.
