1266 Words3 Pages

Shakespeare’s Sonnet #23 is addressed to the lovely young man, called WH. The speaker is trying to convey his complex feeling towards his lover. He is tongue-tied in the young man’s company and he is trying to explain this awkwardness and express his complex emotions in this sonnet. It is, the speaker says, due to the hugeness of his love, that makes it too heavy to carry. For the author this sonnet is a silent representation of his inner voice. To show the complexity of the situation, he compares poet’s role as a lover to an actor’s timidity onstage. He asks WH to read these silent lines and explains that love will give him the insight to read between lines. The sonnet consists of 14 lines, which are splitted into octave and a sestet, and has typical for Shakespeare’s sonnets rhyme scheme: a-b-a-b, c-d-c-d, e-f-e-f, g-g. He uses first two quatrains to establish a problem and then resolves it in a third quatrain, summarizing solution in the following couplet. The author’s goal in the first quatrain is to show what is causing his inability to speak in the young man’s presence. The persona firstly compares himself to an “unperfect actor on the stage” (23.1), who is unable express his feeling and carefully follows his script, and then he becomes “some fierce thing” (23.3), whose excessive passion makes him weak. The actor’s fear on the stage illustrates his imperfection and thus he is unable to open his soul and play his part well. Just as an actor who cannot perform on the stage perfectly because of the fear, the speaker cannot find the right words when speaking to the young man. He shows that the key to becoming a great actor or lover is the ability to show one's soul without being distracted by the rest of the world. The couplet of Shakespeare serves as continuation of a previous quatrain, summarizing the solution of previously stated problem. Using “O” (23.13) at the beginning of the first line “O learn to read what silent love hath writ.”(23.13) symbolizes the strength of emotions expressed after it. In this line speaker try to convey the young man of his love towards him and asks him to try to hear author’s heart in these silent lines. He says, “To hear with eyes belongs to love’s fine wit,”(23,14) meaning that only love can make WH able to read between author’s lines to fully understand speaker’s feelings. Concluding the sonnet, the persona summarizes all his previous words explaining WH why these sonnets is the perfect ceremony of love’s rit and thus the best way for the speaker to express his feelings.
