STATEMENT OF PURPOSE If you do a job that is monotonous / clerical and does not require a lot of logic and reasoning, you lend yourself to boredom and chances are that you would totally arrest your mind’s capacity to think. A simple fact of life, but a ‘life shaping’ matters of truth, it turned out to be. When I used to hear my dad say this, little did I realize that this childhood advice would instill in me a spirit to apply my logic and reasoning to even small things I come across. The urge of doing the best in whatever one does was sowed in deep right from my childhood. This was substantiated when I won general proficiencies at various grades and won laurels at various quiz competitions, general knowledge contests and oratorical competitions. I was first introduced to the real world CS and programming languages in Grade 9. I learned Java for 4 years and watching my code execute correctly was always delightful. And that is when I decided that I wanted to pursue CS. At UCI, I learned Python in my first year and currently I am learning C++. Some assignments have really blown me away as I was able to connect the dots between different concepts and produce results. To get exposed to CS, I job shadowed a Web Developer and a Director of Operation. To gain new skills, I did a research project in areas of crowdsourcing where I learned Django and applied my knowledge in creating a website with other teammates using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I worked on IoT and Augmented Reality as a summer intern. I am currently working on Augmented Reality as an intern, this quarter. I believe that learning and applying are different things and unless you are able to develop or progress by applying your knowledge you won’t know if you have indeed trodden the path of mastering it. I am grateful to have several opportunities to help me grow and advance in CS.
Wherever you live, whatever you do to reach your goals; without thinking, you wouldn’t be there. Whenever I consider a certain idea, the more I think about it, the more apt I am to receive or seek the knowledge, and the more probable I will solve my situations successfully. Although I may be hesitant to entertain radical and differentiating thoughts at times, I rest assured that if I am thinking for myself, the results will be in my favor no matter what the outcome, because I did not surrender sovereignty of my knowledge to anyone else.
When I started my college career, I had an idea in mind. It was “I want a computer science degree!”, and I have to say, after this first term, that thought has not changed. I mean, not enough time has passed to consider changing major at this point. According to Clifton, Anderson & Schreiner (2006) “anywhere from 60 to 85% of entering college students change their major at least one” (p. 236). I hope not to be part of this statistic. I hope to continue on through with the major that I have chosen.

When I was in middle school, I had totally no idea of what Computer Science is, but I was pretty proficient in using computers at that age. The only thing that I knew about Computer Science is that one of my aunts is in that field and that’s all, nor of my parents are in that major. Not until in High School that I got the sense of what programming is like. I was taught basic simple codings and I really enjoyed it and thought that the class was actually quite fun. But the class didn’t give me any sense of the important real-world applications of Computer Science. Not until recently as I am in the Computer Science major, I started to really have the real idea and to gain real passion for the field. Computer Science is not all about programming.
Banking on an excellent academic record coupled with a keen interest in the ever-growing field of science and technology motivated me to take up engineering. In school, I consistently secured one of the top positions of the class. I have always been attracted towards subjects that draw upon one's analytical abilities. Strive harder to get what you like or you will be forced to like what you get – A golden rule that I have been following since my childhood, in turn helping me achieve all my goals with sheer persistence and determination. Right from the start of my schooling, I have been passionate about science and mathematics because of their preciseness and logical theory involved. I passed out of 10th standard with 92.33% (School Topper) overall with 99 percent in Mathematics and 96 percent in Science. I’m extremely gratified by my results in Mathematics, as I maintained 99% score in the same till my under graduation.
I had always had an analytical and logical approach towards learning from childhood days. Growing up in the late 90’s, I witnessed computers revolutionize India – we had cellphones and personal computers and the internet transforming our lives - and like most other kids, I was fascinated by them. It wasn’t until I took course on QBasic in 8th grade, however, that I really took a liking to computer programming. The idea of computer ‘languages’ seemed almost magical to me. Over the years, that proclivity for programming grew into a passion and led me to take more programming electives in higher grades. I also took the initiative to set up a student-run Computer Club in my high school and host our first annual Computer Symposium.
