Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to health problems. It also can be defined as abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat that can presents a risk to health. According to WHO, 2013, body mass index (BMI) is a measurement that can be obtained by dividing a person’s weight (in kilograms) by the square of the person’s height (in meters). “A person is considered obese when their BMI equal to or exceeds 30 kg/m2. A person with a BMI equal to or more than 25 kg/m2 is considered overweight”(WHO, 2013). Obesity is most commonly caused by a combination of excessive food energy intake, lack of physical activity and genetic susceptibility. Obesity is major risk factors for a number of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cancer.
For our information, unconsciously overweight and obesity are the fifth leading risk for global death. They were at least 2.8 million adults die each of the year due to the result of being obese. In addition, there are statistics that attributable to obese in which about 44% are diabetes burden, 23% are ischemic heart disease burden and between 7% and 41% of certain cancer burdens. Research had be done by some of World Health Organization(WHO) global that estimate from the year 2008; more than 1.4 billion are adults that around age 20 and older were overweight. Of these overweight adults, over 200 million men and nearly 300 million women were obese. Overall , more than 10 % of the world’s adult population were obese.(WHO, 2013). Besides that, based on BMI(Body Mass Index) there were nearly over 25 and only 5% obese Malaysians in 1996 rising to 14% in 2006 and 15% by 2012. ...

In the nutshell, people with obesity are increasing from year to year without realizing it. Many people look obesity as a simple problem but in reality obesity become the fifth leading risk for global death. If there are many causes of obesity, there are also many ways to prevent it. Therefore, we should be wise in preventing obesity because it can lead to many problems especially health problems. We must remember that preventing is much better than cure. Hopefully, after this Malaysians can be more alert toward this problem and must follow a good eating habit. We, as Malaysians must be healthy so that we can lead our country in achieving development.
Obesity is on the rise, and it is becoming more and more of a national health concern. It effects more than 1/3 of the population, and an additional 1/3 is overweight. With obesity becoming more and more of a problem each year, the American population is going to suffer from a catastrophic health emergency.
Obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. Obesity are the fifth leading risk for global deaths1. The prevalence of overweight, obesity, and extreme obesity has been increasing worldwide in the last decades, not only adults but starting as early as in childhood and adolescence1,2,3. More recent estimates suggest that body weight gain will continue to increase, particularly in the younger people4.
“What is obesity? Overweight and obesity are major risk factors for a number of chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer and while it was once an issue only in high income countries, overweight and obesity has now dramatically risen in low- and middle-income countries. Such countries are now facing a "double burden" of disease,
About 2.8 billion adults every year die of obesity (Diet). Rachel Epstein wrote the book “Eating Habits and Disorders” which talks about obesity being a disease. Obesity is a condition with extra body fat which often starts to form in childhood (Epstein 25). While obesity for some adults can be life-threatening (Epstein 25). It can also form psychosocial problems (Epstein 25). Being obese causes a risk in diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, kidney trouble and more (Epstein 25). Being obese during pregnancy can cause many problems for the mom, and for the baby (Epstein 25). Any of these things could cause many problems either in the future, or in the present (Epstein 25). The worse the eating habits, the harder it is to cure (Epstein 25). The government needs to do more about obesity because obesity rates are rising, many kids are being victims of obesity and they don’t even know it, also Medical Care is taking a big part with the growing obesity rates.
There is no doubt that obesity has taken its seat as one of the top disease that strikes the world today. In America, obesity has now spread through the country leaving 2 out of 3 adults either overweight or obese, and worldwide 1.5 billion are overweight or obese (Overweight). The cause of this disease stems from multiple reasons such as the increase in modern food production, putting out ample amounts of food causing the prices for meat, groceries, and especially junk food to plummet. Subsequently, Americans especially were more inclined to purchase more food and showed an increase in the average American house hold food intake by 1,000 more calories a day (Dreifus).
Obesity is defined by Webster’s dictionary as increase body weight due to excessive accumulation of body fat. It is a condition or disease in which the “the natural energy reserve of humans or mammals, which is stored in fat tissue, is expanded far beyond usual levels to the point where it impairs health.” Obesity is most often measured by using the BMI (body mass index). BMI is calculated by dividing the weight in kilograms by the height squared in meters. A desirable BMI for children to sustain a healthy life is between 18.5 and 25. A child with a BMI over 25.0 kg/m 2 is considered overweight. A BMI over 30.0kg/m 2 is considered obese, and a BMI over 40 is morbid obesity. “An estimated 80% of overweight adolescents continue to be obese into adulthood, so the implications of childhood obesity on the nation’s health are huge”. (Survey on childhood obesity, 2014). Obesity is a chronic condition that develops as a result of genetic, behavioral and environmental factors.
Research studies say Obesity is in charge for a large number of early deaths every year in England, and decrease life expectation by an average of nine years. Therefore this document will discuss the major factors that contribute both causes and health risk includes a possible prevention. In general, Why do people become obese and what are the major health risks they would expand in the future?
Obesity is when a person’s calorie intake exceeds one’s activity level. Activity burns calories and what ever calories are not burned, are stored as fat cells in the body. 19-24% is a healthy body mass index (BMI) for an individual. Mary Jo Thomas, M.D., states that “One that is obese has a body mass index of over 30. With a BMI of 30 or greater, one is at an immediate health threat.” (Thomas, 2013) Scientific evidence supports that the main causes of an obesity may include: ““increasingly sedentary lifestyle; high consumption of simple carbohydrates and fats (especially the refined sugars and greasy preparations common in junk and fast foods); and stress. To a lesser degree illnesses such as hypothyroidism (u...
What is obesity? Obesity is excess of tissue. There are many different methods determining excess of fat. The most common one is body BMI or Body Mass Index. The excess fat increases fatty acids and inflammation. All this can lead to type 2 diabetes. Obesity is a disease that affects many Americans. According to the article “ Genes Do Play a Role in Obesity” the interaction between obesity related genes and
Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduce life expectancy and/or increased health problems. Obesity has been a health problem ever since infectious disease had began in the first half of the 20th Century. The person with obesity is not the only person who is affected by their disease. In the case of childhood obesity, It can affect the parents because they might be the cause of the child’s issues. It can also lead to many different health problems such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and respiratory problems, and it can also even lead to death. Obesity has affected the world in many ways: task forces have been formed to address the issue, people are suffering from health problems due to obesity, and others suffer psychological and social issues.
Obesity is a very common health problem in the U.S., and the number of people considered obese is forever increasing. More than 35.7% of U.S. adults are considered obese (“Adult Overweight”). The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism points out that “obesity is a chronic medical condition characterized by too much body fat” (Beeson, Hill, Wyatt). It is diagnosed by a number called the Body Mass Index or BMI. This number calculates the amount of body fat based on the person’s height and weight. The higher the BMI the more body fat obese people have which leads to obesity. An adult with a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight. An adult with a BMI of greater than 30 is considered obese (“Adult Overweight”). While Obesity is an extremely serious problem in the U.S., this condition, except possibly for the cases of genetic and hormonal disorders, can be prevented by portion control, exercise, and eating a well-balanced diet.
(Jonas Minet, Stephen morris 2010). The prevalence of obesity has increased more than twofold in the last 25 years. In 2014, world health organisation (WHO) estimates that 1.9 billions of world’s adult populations are overweight, of which at least 600 million were obese, representing 13% of adult’s population (obesity WHO, 2014). Obesity is no longer a rich country’s problem, but also affects the poor and emerging countries which make it a major public health challenge. ( )
Obesity is a public health issue due to the complications it leads to later in life. Obese individuals are more susceptible in obtaining health problems such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, therefore have a higher risk of mortality (WHOgoogle). Yet not only is obesity a problem of the individual but of society as well. In 2008 US spent an estimated cost of $147 billion on medical cost of obesity, almost a 70 billion dollar increase since 1998(CDC). Both the detrimental health issues it leads a too and the excessive amount of cost it causes, obesity is epidemic that must be addressed.
Obesity, also often referred to as being excessively overweight. An abnormal accumulation of body fat over an individual’s ideal body weight. Obesity has been associated with U.S. for many decades, but the cause of it is still unknown. There are many factors such as genetics, various combinations of hormonal, metabolic, and behavioral factors that play a role in obesity. In most of the cases, it is still hard to determine the exact causation of obesity. This epidemic has been increasing throughout the industrialized world. In less than 40 years, the prevalence of obesity in the U.S. has increased by over 50%, so that two of every three American adults are now overweight or obese (Obesity in America, 5). Most obvious consequences of obesity are diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease, but cancer, arthritis, and depression are other serious factors to health. All in all, obesity and over weight account for nearly one of every 10 American deaths, and they also drain our society of $223 billion a year (Obesity in America, 5). Obesity is something that is present and dangerous, but people seem to overlook it.
In the 21st century, a lot of people in the world are faced with the nightmare of being extremely overweight. This is majorly due to the type of food we are eating, increased sedentary lifestyle and other factors such as stress. Being overweight comes at a cost, the most lethal one being the risk of acquiring new diseases associated with excessive body fat which is a major contributor to the many deaths that we are experiencing worldwide today. In medical terms, being extremely overweight is referred to as obesity. Obesity is an excess of body fat that is associated with health problems (Stettler et al 1). Research carried out by various individuals and institutions point out to the fact that obesity is the biggest killer worldwide..
