Solving Environmental Sustainability Problems
The restaurant business is one of the most important types of business in the entire world. Restaurants feed thousands of people daily and also supply others with job opportunities. Mary is an owner of a thriving restaurant that gives customers a full tummy and employees a nice paycheck. One day, Mary decides to do a detailed inspection herself to confirm that the restaurant is running smoothly and properly. When Mary began the inspection process, there were many problems that she came across like the water that’s being wasted, the over usage of paper products, absence of recycling bins, and the packaging material is not eco-friendly. It is not the end of the world just yet because there is always a solution to every problem. Although restaurants lack environmental practices, there are solutions that can be done to fix these problems. Every now and then, people like to go out for a bite to eat with family and friends instead of staying in and cooking. Going out for a nice dinner is like a quick and easy escape because it takes peoples’ mind off the stress that’s going on in their daily lives. A small restaurant like Panera Bread is a franchise where people of all ages can dine in or do take-out. Even more, there are many varieties of food choices like the sandwiches, hot Paninis, homemade soups, salads, warm pastries, and of course the very famous, freshly baked bread. Even though the restaurant is known for being an eco-friendly atmosphere, it is not. Panera Bread is just like all the other restaurants that do not pay attention to what is being wasted regularly. From the minute that a restaurant flips over the sign from open to close, new customers are waiting to be ...

...sing a trash composter, which is rather cheap, and place biodegradable material in there. The fewer amounts of landfills, the more acreage for local parks and nature trails that people can take their families to. As a final point, owners like Mary will begin to realize what can be done to run an environmentally friendly and beautiful restaurant. The bills on water will be cut down so much lower that the actual profit coming in will double. The amount of paper being saved every day will accumulate and show other customers why it is important to recycle and use biodegradable products. The act of one restaurant going green will change others’ minds about how to be more cost effective and how to keep the environment sustainable.

With forward movement in society, it is important to consider not just what will propel most toward success, but also what will help to sustain the environment along the way. What may have been considered appropriate decades ago, may no longer be socially acceptable due to the changes observed in both the business world and the environment (Fiske, 2010). Therefore, it is important for organizations thriving in today?s economy to consider how they may capitalize most effectively from their product or service of choice while minimizing or eliminating any damages along the way (Knoke, 2012).
Whether an organization is domestic or international they have social responsibilities to the communities they operate within and to the shielding of the world. Caterpillar, Inc. is one such company that puts social responsibility at the top of their priorities. They have an abundance of engineers and technologists working on solutions to improve on sustainability. According to the 2012 Sustainability Report (2012), “at Caterpillar, we always ask ourselves, ‘What do our customers need? What does the world need?’ World Resources Institute (WRI) asks those same questions about the communities it serves, and truly delivers some amazing results” (p. 19).
These days, it seems that everyone is talking about “sustainability” or “going green.” However, these terms are somewhat confusing and difficult to classify. Over the past few decades, the concept of sustainable viticulture has emerged and is spreading awareness to grape growers and winemakers across the United States and beyond.
...ion even more. We tend to shop for more products that we want because we are never contented on what we have. This results into an increase amount of electronic waste products that often end up in our landfills, or are being burned in incinerators, all to which are the cause of air, land, and water pollution.
One of their numerous ways they achieve is by bearing in mind the environment when making decisions about their packing. For this reason, they have applied recycling programs to increase the number of restaurants diverting paper packaging and organic waste by 20%. In addition, Tim Hortons is dedicated in decreasing the environmental impact by aiming for a 10% reduction in energy consumption and landfill waste, at their corporate offices by the end of 2015. They are also constantly assessing new technology, design and construction techniques to advance the energy and water efficiency of their restaurant buildings. Thus, not only does it reduce the company’s environmental footprint, but they also profit economically by saving on the utility expenses to function their restaurants. The same achievement is apparent regarding their restaurant equipment as they partnered with a recycling company to implement a menu board recycling program. In total, Tim Hortons ended up recycling approximately 230,000 pounds of materials and generated approximately $25,000 in revenue which will was donated to the Tim Horton Children’s Foundation. Accordingly, there is no doubt that Tim Hortons participates in ethical actions on the environmental side as well to bring economic
It is difficult for humans to live in harmony with nature because humans’ selfishness always places profits before our earth’s needs. We live in a consumer society, which we purchase interesting products and dispose of them carelessly. Those products with non-decomposable materials, which make our life easier and more comfortable, result a massive damage to our environment. In the articles, “A Fable for Tomorrow” by Rachel Carson and “Our Animals Rite” by Anna Quindlen, both authors suggest destruction in nature world due to human’s activities. As environment issues presented by scientists, governments around the world start to give highly attention on the environmental protection, but there are many challenges in implementing environmental protection policies. Some of the top environmental concerns are air pollution, climate changing and trash waste. Although people started to aware the horrible consequences due to polluted environment, an efficient life, people apathy toward ecosystem and human's unlimited desires for a confortable life have created obstacles for the world to protect the environment.
Many of the customers are regulars who have been coming to the restaurant ever since it first opened, which is why the owners make it a priority to provide a consistent menu with the customer’s favorite entrees. The restaurant strictly serves dinner options, as it opens its doors at 4pm. The menu consists of seafood, pasta, steak, and sandwiches, as well as a daily entrée and soup specials, allowing every customer to find something that appeals to them on the menu. Although the menu features a wide variety of food, many of the options, especially the seafood, can be quite pricey for many customers. This results in many customers only being able to come in for special occasions, as the food is too expensive to pay for on a regular basis. Some of the restaurants most popular items, such as the prime rib, are only available on the weekend, resulting in customers who come into the restaurant specifically for thos...

“Conceptualizing is an integrative strategy designed to take scientific and mathematical thinking beyond the facts and singular theories to the level of the underlying concepts. Such core concepts such as linearity, change, and scale can effectively tie together algebra and geometry, physics and biology, illuminating a hidden pattern of relationships.” (Frid, 1995) When talking about the conceptualization of restaurants all these fundamentals play an important role. To scoop out all the hidden patterns and analyzing them in order to set up a working model for more stability and profitability by understanding customer needs and other influencing factors are the restaurant concepts. The role of restaurant concepts is not just the aesthetic or visual design of a restaurant but is also about pre-assessment
“Sustainable Development: At its heart, sustainable development is the simple idea of ensuring a good quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come. It is about living within the carrying capacity of the environment so that how we live, work and enjoy leisure activities, which do not harm or put undue pressures on the environment. It is about ensuring everyone has the opportunity to have a decent education, a quality environment that they take pride in, good health and a decent job (n.p, 2014)”

The world today is vastly different from what it was before urbanisation and industrialisation had taken its toll on the world. Since the turn of the new millennium the issue of the environment has suddenly evolved into a widespread issue which is greatly discussed throughout the world. No longer are humans living in a world where the environment is serene or stable but much rather becoming unrecognisable and diminishing before our eyes. The plants, trees and flowers are life forms which God has created for us to enjoy its beauty but it is now solely up to us and many other organisations to protect preserve and respect how fragile our environment really is.
The concept of “going green” is a necessity for the future because “our children deserve cities as beautiful as they are”. Works Cited Russell, Lauren. A. Web. " An Evaluation of Municipal Recycling Programs."
The restaurant industry has become quite competitive in recent times. In an effort to cut costs restaurants are taking serious measures to improve their performance in relation to their competitors. Two of the most important steps that restaurants have undertaken in recent years are:
