Social Networking and Narcissistic Behavior

Social networking has risen in popularity throughout the last twenty years and in effect narcissistic behavior has increased within society(particularly America's society) since the 1980's(Jayson 1). Studies show that the greater an individual is inclined to narcissistic behavior; there is a resulting increase in their online social networking activity(Mehdizadeh 357). Social networking sites or “SNSs” are defined as: “A web-based services that allow individuals to (1) construct a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system, (2) articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and (3) view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system”(Boyd, Ellison 1).

Narcissism can play a role in deciding to create a profile page on a website such as Facebook although it is not a necessary personality trait to do so because some people just want to stay in contact with family and close personal friends. The word “Narcissist” comes from the story of Narcissus, who was punished by Aphrodite, making Narcissus fall in love with his reflection in a fountain of water wasting away and dying(Berens 163). In popular research of narcissism it is defined as “A pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and an exaggerated sense of self-importance”(Oltmanns 387).

I was born pre-internet so one day when I have children I’ll blow their minds, telling them about how when I was a teenager there was no such thing as social networking. In fact, I’ll explain that the Internet was just beginning to become useful to the public and websites didn’t exist.
