Retailers have created their own Facebook book pages and Twitter accounts to market themselves. Now, they are selling direct to consumers (e-commerce stores) via the social networking sites of Facebook and MySpace.

Affiliate marketers take advantage of social networking sites to reach a target audience without investing a great deal of money. Social media is used to have products noticed and to promote the brand were consumers spend most of their time.
Products that sell best on the internet through social media are products consumers are fairly familiar with or products that do not carry an element surprise upon receiving them. People tend to buy products online that they don’t need to touch smell or examine. The consumer has a pretty good idea what they are getting. I think the most appropriate product categories are books, movies, music, travel, electronics, flowers, cards and clothing.
Amazon.com does well because there is no mystery to buying a book as reviews are written on line and you are able to determine rather easily if this book you prefer and shipping is generally easy and fast. Social Media sites also help in promoting a book as people post reviews of what they read which could encourage a purchase of a book.
