Soccer has proven to be a notable sport throughout the years starting with its unique history. Soccer began all over the world tracing back thousands of years. The Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Ancient Greek, Persian, Vikings, as well as other nationalities all played a form of the game soccer. In China and Rome, games that were similar to soccer were played around 200 B.C. (Helmer and Owens, 5). People believe that soccer started more than a thousand years ago when villagers killed attacking pirates by cutting off their heads and kicking them around (Helmer and Owens, 5). As time went on, people in Europe also played a game similar to soccer during Medieval Times. In fact, soccer was used to prepare warriors for battles in Ancient Greece and Rome (Dilov-Shultheis). In later history, the English called the game “Football” because soccer was played by kicking the ball with the foot (Helmer and Owens, 6). Foer vowed to show us how the game of soccer can impact different regions and cultures. He indicated us how these relationships (between different nations and beliefs), while there, are hard to apprehend on the global scale. But trough soccer, these relationships reveal themselves in a hesitant fashion.
In conclusion, as we can see there are many difference in Foer’s and Winner’s thesis and the way they approach soccer. The most remarkable difference are that Foer’s approaches soccer as a way of religion and identification and Winner’s by looking at the style of play and not the form. In Foer’s analysis we identity soccer as a way of resisting nationalism and join a global culture. Winner’s analysis of Dutch soccer also associates soccer with personal price rather than a national pride. But in Foer’s analysis, people are turning to sports fo find values and others characteristic that they would find are taught in religion. While in Winner’s we are looking at players who are looking for a beautiful goal and being the center of attention. In one we see the search for values and in the other self-conscious players looking for glory.
In almost every high school throughout the United States, there always seems to be some discontent between the members of the football and soccer teams. One is considered to be the most popular sport in the United States, while the other is deemed to be the most popular sport in the world. The former, football, has more participants at the high school and college level than any other sport in the United States. While the latter, soccer, is one of the fastest growing sports in the country. Although these two sports have some significant differences, they also have more similarities than some people may realize.

In the world of sport, soccer and football with respect to demographic has had numerous controversies. Although both sport are known famously around the globe, for many years fans from both sides are known for asking, is American football same as soccer? What’s the time limit on both sports? Soccer the way we play it came from England in the 1800’s. Soccer was not that popular until the mid-1900’s. Today soccer is very popular and it is one of the nations fastest-growing sports. There are many exercises and drills you can do to improve how you play soccer. There is also many physical conditioning that players can do. Soccer can help you stay fit and healthy. In the 19th century, soccer started to come to life in America. Some colleges started to play the game in the 1820s, with the first contest taking place at Harvard in 1827. Then, a huge invention took place in 1855. That year, the Charles Goodyear soccer ball was invented. Charles Goodyear created these soccer balls with vulcanized rubber. 12 years later in 1867, soccer took two huge steps. The first standardized soccer rules were published that year. Now, graduates from different schools could play together and had proper rules to follow when playing a game. But later that year, another just as, if not mor...
Today, a soccer team consists of eleven members: seven offensive and four defensive players. One rule that has stayed the same since soccer began, the goalie may use his/her hands to prevent the ball from entering the net. Players are not allowed to trip, hold, shove, push, kick or strike any other player on the field. A game of football is divided into two half's, both forty-five minutes long with added time if there were pauses in the game depending on how much time was wasted. Just as in any sport, players will try to exploit the rules to have an advantage over the opponent. Tactics such as falling down without contact to receive a free kick is common to see in football. As irritating it is to see a player exploiting the rules for an advantage, there is no comparison in seeing a player tumble over in a hysterical
In conclusion, football and soccer have their similarities, but these similarities are superficial. There are many fundamental differences, such as the use of one’s hands being illegal in soccer, except for the goalie when he/she is inside his/her respective eighteen-yard boundary. Another example is the alternation of a team’s offense and defense in football as opposed to the simultaneous effort of the offense and defense in soccer. These differences in rules, rituals, and concepts distinguish these two sports from each other. However, there are similarities, such as the fact that both sports allow eleven players on each team to play on the field at a time. Also, the area where one scores is in the same locations in both sports, the end zones of football and the goals of soccer are on opposite sides of the field.
Football, which is commonly known today as Soccer, began in Europe during the Middle Ages (Leibs 67). “By the early 1600s, the game developed a...
Living in country like Vietnam, soccer is the king of sport. That is why it is not surprising that my childhood has grown up with the soccer’s ball until today. My mom told me that I liked kicking the ball around and had so much fun with it when I was only about two years old. Since then, playing soccer is my favorite’s sport and it is my hobby whenever I have free time. It is interesting and amazing, especially the feeling when I score a goal or my teammates do it. That feeling fulfills in me like I have just archived something very important. Playing soccer also helps me to relax and be confident when I have stress and frustration. For instant, after doing assignment or studying all day long, I feel tired and exhausted. However, having fun with the ball such as kicking it against the wall or trying to do some tricks, all of my tiresome and exhaustion die out.
