Getting enough sleep at night? Well, first off the amounts of sleep needed to function correctly differ with age, but the amount of sleep people need gets shorter as they get older. The amounts of sleep people get can also affect how they act. There are numerous ways people can catch up on sleep though. Sleep affects how people act; sleep allows the body to perform maintenance to prepare people for the next day. When tired, always sleep and not try and force staying awake using caffeine or anything unhealthy. People should always sleep because if they stay awake for too long the consequences could be very severe. Sleep is essential for people’s wellbeing.
Amounts of sleep people need to live healthily and happily differ with age. The older that people get, the more sleep that people need. The youngest of kids need about 2 more hours than a full grown adult. Then an elderly person needs about 1 hour less than a full grown adult to function properly. Scientists performed a controlled experiment last year on kids from 10 years old to 18 on how much sleep each group needed and it was over the course of a month so it’s a pretty accurate representation of the amount of sleep that each age group needs. “For older teens, seven hours a night was plenty. The optimal amount of sleep for 12 year olds was higher, about eight hours, while 10 year olds did best with nine hours” (Rubin). This proves that while young, people need more sleep to be able to function correctly. So when young people don’t get enough sleep, it affects them a lot more than it would an older person since they need a lot more sleep than an older person would. However, not everyone gets the 7-9 hours of sleep they need on a regular basis. In a study done by the National Institute of Health, one-third of Americans get less than 7 hours of sleep and more than 70% of high school students are not getting enough sleep on a school night (National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute 2012). According to Frank Bruni, the reason for this is caused by cell phones, social media, schoolwork, and friends. I agree very much with this article because I can relate to it. I completely agree school work and cell phones have a major impact on the amount of sleep teenagers get.

Teens need about 9 to 10 hours of sleep each night to function best. Most teens do not get enough sleep. One study found that 85% students didn’t get enough sleep on school nights.
Were you aware that teens tend to have irregular sleeping patterns that can harm their body and the way it functions? When it comes to sleep, teens are inclined to stay up very late during the week and wake up very early in the morning. On the weekends, they seem to gravitate more towards waking up very late to catch up on the sleep that they missed earlier in the week. Sleep is a part of daily routine that is vital for a person to be able to function adequately throughout the day. Without a sufficient amount of sleep, or problems during sleep, a person could have a tougher time trying to focus and operate throughout the course of the day.
