In Craig Lesley’s novel The Sky Fisherman, he illustrates the full desire of direction and the constant flow of life. A boy experiences a chain of life changing series of events that cause him to mature faster than a boy should. Death is an obstacle that can break down any man, a crucial role in the circle of life. It’s something that builds up your past and no direction for your future. No matter how hard life got, Culver fought through the pain and came out as a different person. Physical pain gives experience, emotional pain makes men.

“I envied the people in the train because they seemed to be going somewhere” (Lesley,7).
Culver has always dreamt and hoped of a place to call home or a place to be. As he observes the people on the train, he has no choice but to envy them because of their opportunity. A fire builds up in his heart and shapes his personality. In the book The Good Earth, Wang Lung envies the people with their wealth and opportunities. Culver experiences, as both men strived for something more than they had. Culver will always strive for a place to call home, giving him a fire. “As always, we started out hopeful, but as we traveled.. a pall fell over our little band” (4). Culver has experienced a life of struggle falling into a routine of hope that turns into sadness. He tries to put a positive spin on change, but in the end fails, and loses hope as they travel. His background and personality is formed by his experiences of moving affecting him for the worse. Culvers personality and situation resembles an orphan, both constantly on the move and lose their hope over time. The older they get, the more they move and the less hope they have. If he can never live in one place he will become hopeless and his family...

...ut Jake in a confused state of his life. His love has always been the river, giving him hope, peace, friendship, brotherhood, and love. The river gave him everything but has now taken away his only brother for no reason at all. No matter how much he tries to get away from his past, the river is his life and has become his home.

The circle of life is an unfair and painful process of the world balancing itself. The river is used to keep this balance by taking lives and continuing the cycle. As it uses death to maintain this process, it also provides a direction and pieces hope for anyone who requires it. Growing up is a part of life and becoming a man is a struggle for any boy. It requires experience and knowledge, but even then manhood cannot mask all pain. Unfortunately, life doesn't take pity for the weak or young. All people are victims of the circle of life.
