A. “Danon disease is a rare genetic disorder characterized by an X-linked dominant inheritance pattern where males are more severely affected than females”. (NORD) danon disease will affect males more than women, and they are typically affected more with this disease which affects the Cardiomyopathy, deterioration of the heart. With danon disease there is the risk of cognitive disability from mild learning disabilities to mental retardation. In males that are effected by danon disease, it sometimes will advance to the point of death or a heart transplant, when the males are in their mid to late twenty’s. Females have the risk of developing Danon disease, although in a more of a mild form and often not until the females reach adulthood.
Signs of Danon disease will start to show themselves once the child enters into early childhood or youth stages, some affected males will not show signs of the disease until as late as early adulthood; which usually happens in the female cases. Danon disease symptoms are inconsistent depending on both age and sex of the person. Boys will start to show signs of muscle problems, like difficulty sitting and walking, motor skills can start to relapse. Cognitive disability can start to be observed by parents and; or teachers. Heart disease can lead to further fatigue and shortness of breath. Young girls will not show any type of signs or symptoms, but as the female’s age, they will start to show signs, much like the males with symptoms of heart disease or muscle weakness. Visual problems were also reported in women and can be an initial feature of the disease. Once diagnosed with Danon disease we have seen a pattern of males on average living to age 19, while females live to an average age of 34.

Danon disease is only one of so many adverse disease that can effect ones growth physically and mentally, I feel by completing this research on this disease will help me realize that not all children disabilities stem from one single source and not to put the children in to certain categories. I will need to be vigilant while directing the class room in activities and look for more than one cause of a child’s inability to complete a task, this research has open my eyes to the vast assortment of rear disease that are out there, and I must keep an open mind while teaching my classes.

I have experienced firsthand the trials of a teenager living with a disability. Life is difficult, but I’ve learned if you stay positive and make good choices, things will invariably get better. I also plan to be a counselor each summer at the Youth Rally camp for those with bowel and/or bladder disorders, teaching them the importance of doing what they love and not letting their disability hold them
Parkinson disease begins after the age of 40 years, with peak age of onset between 58 and 62 years. It is slightly more prevalent in males. This disease is one of the most prevalent of the primary CNS disorders and a leading cause of neurologic disability in individuals older than 60 years. The prevalence rate is 107 to 187 per 100,000 persons, with 40,000 new cases in the United States each year.
Muscular Dystrophy is a genetic disorder in which your muscles drastically weaken over time. Muscles are replaced with “connective tissue,” which is more of a fatty tissue than a muscular one. The connective tissue is the tissue that is commonly found in scars, and that same tissue is incapable of movement. Although Muscular Dystrophy affects muscles in general, other types affect certain groups of muscles, and happen at different periods throughout a lifetime. For example one of the most common types, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, targets muscles in the upper thigh and pelvis. The disease is displayed throughout early childhood, usually between ages four and seven. This genetic disorder occurs only in boys. People have difficulty sitting up or standing and lose their ability to walk in their early teens. Sadly most people die by the age of twenty. A second common type, Becker’s Muscular Dystrophy affects the same muscles as Duchenne, but first appears in teenage years. Most people with Becker’s only live into their forties (Fallon 1824-1825).
It is estimated that 1 out of every 5,600-7,700 boys ages 5-24 have Duchene or Becker muscular dystrophy. (“Data & Statistics,” 2012 April 6) Muscular dystrophy is a group of genetic diseases defined by muscle fibers that are unusually susceptible to damage. There is a long history of the disorder but until recently there wasn’t much knowledge of the cause. (“Muscular Dystrophy,” 2012 January 19) There is no cure for muscular dystrophy but there are several types of therapy and most types of muscular dystrophy are still fatal. After over 15 years of working as a CNA and Caregiver, I decided that I wanted to continue my education in the medical field. In 2013 I took the first step towards gaining a better future with more experience as a medical professional. I enrolled into a Medical Assistant program at IBMC college of Longmont. It has been a long road and I am almost to the finish line having gained essential skills needed to move further into my career. It has been a grueling and eye opening experience for me being an adult learner returning back to school at 33 years of age. Two years ago, I embarked on a journey that would teach me more than I had ever imagined. As a recent college graduate, I was thrilled to finally begin my teaching career in a field I have always held close to my heart. My first two years as a special education teacher presented countless challenges, however, it also brought me great fulfillment and deepened my passion for teaching students with special needs. I found a job as CNA for the patient who had disabilities. One patient in particular changed the direction of my life and started me thinking about working in medicine. I took care of an older woman who was unable to ambulate due to her diagnosis of stroke. She experienced chronic weakness of bilateral lower extremity so I supported her with my arms to steady her. When I looked into her eyes, I could feel her saying, “you truly care about me, understand me, and thank you for taking the time to sense my expression and desire.” That’s the care all of us have deep inside, where our motives no longer become self-seeking but other-seeking. I hope to impact this professional with my knowledge and expertise. I am now in school again to further my knowledge of this profession. It may seem old for some. I spent most of my time in a first grade classroom. In this classroom I observed the children as well as the teacher and paraprofessional. This classroom had children with special needs and that is why there was a paraprofessional in the classroom for half the day. What I observed in this classroom was how children with special need should be handle and taught. The teachers in this room loves her job and each student in her class. While in the classroom the teacher allowed me to help with children with their work, read to them and help them with anything else that they needed. During this field experience I got to give back to not only a school, but to a community that is very near and dear to my heart. I hope that I touched each student in a special way, because the students that I got the opportunity to help learn touched my
