There were many characters in the story of Show Boat. In the beginning we met Captain Andy Hawks and his wife Parthy Anne. Andy was the caption of the Cotton Blossom. They had one daughter and her name was Magnolia. The purpose of Andy and Parthy Anne is to add comedy and conflict in the story. They fought a lot and it was very humorous, and it seemed as if they both stood on opposite sides when it came to raising their daughter. Magnolia was probably the star of the musical. She tied in to almost everyone in the story.
Later on, Magnolia married Gaylord Rayenal. He is a gambler and gives Magnolia a good life for a while. His purpose in the story was to add the romance, and to also add conflict. They eventually have a daughter named Kim.
In the beginning we also met a girl named Julie LaVerne. She was married to a man named Steve Baker. Julie was also Magnolia’s piano teacher. We also met a “friend” of Julie’s named Pete Gavin. Pete had obviously been involved (probably not romantically) with Julie before Show Boat started. The purpose of those two was to tell of racial issues during that time.
There were also two characters in the beginning named Frank Shultz and Ellie May Chipley. They were the comedians on board. They were there for mostly comedy…. and also irony. They are the ones who met Magnolia in Chicago. It was also very ironic how they finally got married and adopted a son who turned out to be very talented.
Joe and Queenie were two of the black characters on the boat. They were married. I think the reason they were there was to show the segregation between whites and blacks in those days. Joe would also sing a song called “Old Man River” that stood for the passing of time.

The first of the girls to be trailed were Betty Parris and Abigail Williams. Movie shows that it was Ruth Putnam whose real name is actually Ann. The Parris family is somewhat confusing in the film compared to actually history. History shows that Betty Parris also had a brother Thomas and a sister Susannah, which were not mentioned in the film at all. Also, the film says that Betty’s mother is dead but according to history she did not die until 1696. Reverend Parris never graduated from Harvard as stated in the movie. He did attend for a short while but later dropped out.

In “Good Country People” by Flannery O’Connor, O’Connor uses many different types of symbolism. The symbolism that is used in each of the characters’ names not only gives another layer to the literal descriptions that can be found throughout the story, but it also tells the reader about the characters. O’Connor uses the characters’ names as a way of showing the personality of each character, while also giving the reader insight to help them to understand the plot of the story. Mrs. Freeman, Mrs. Hopewell, Hulga (Joy), and Manley Pointer are more then just names; they help the reader understand the message that O’Connor in trying to portray.

In history, crimes have been dealt with by the justice system according to its severity as well as the offender: if the crime committed was not very serious and the offender was deemed “non-delinquent”, or “free of any real criminal disposition”, they would be cautioned or fined. However, were the crime a more serious one and the offender appeared to have a “criminal character”, they would receive more severe and more deterrent punishment (Garland, 2001: 42).

When I saw Everett, Delmar, and Pete together in the opening scene, hiding in the grass with every step, I had the impression that the plot would be amusing since they immediately seemed to resemble The Three Stooges. Every character also appeared as exaggerated and almost unrealistic or too good to be true because they were so funny! For example, at the beginning of the film, they ride on a handcar on the railroad driven by a blind African American man who tells them a prophecy. For me, his prophecy felt so randomly placed to me and I laughed because I thought it was so ridiculous! Little did I know, the rest of the film continued to feel this way, but it was a very effective and well-done in adding a comedy to the film. "Big Dan" resembled the cyclops in Homer 's Odyssey, which I found hilarious because not only did he look strange, but his character seemed so exaggerated that I found that he was meant to be this film 's version of the cyclops straightaway. There were other characters, like George Nelson, Homer Stokes, the midget, and the little boy with the gun, that aided in making this story become a more modernized version of the fictitious occurrences within the Odyssey. New ridiculous characters were continually added and discovered as the story progressed, just like the
The main characters within the show would be Peter, Rita, and the Old Man. Peter would be considered as the protagonist, and the Old Man playing the antagonist. Peter meets Rita and they immediately fall in love with each other. Peter asks Rita to marry him and are soon to be married shortly
Lala, Sunny and Peachy are just a few of the characters that were cast in the play. Be assured, however, that all the others were also suitably cast for their roles in the production. Thus, making the character selection only one of the key elements in the production’s success.
She not only includes the new couples (Fred and Mary, Celia and Chettam), but also the older ones (the Garths and the Cadwalladers and the Bulstrodes), as well as widowhood (Dorothea).
