Regarded as a truly important event in history, the Shot Heard 'Round the World made headlines. It was the start of the Battle of Lexington and Concord, the first official battle of the Revolutionary War. On April 19th, 1775 British troops marched to Lexington and Concord, where many militia men already awaited their arrival. The British were after the ammunition of the militia. Paul Revere previously warned the militia so that they could be prepared. Many people are unaware of the fact that Paul Revere was accompanied by William Dawes on his midnight ride. As soon as the militia heard that the British troops were on their way, it removed its stockpiles of ammunition from their hiding places and relocated them to a new shelter. When the British arrived at Lexington, they found the militia in position, ready to defend itself. The British stopped and prepared to face the militia. Both sides remained silent, standing their ground until a shot rang out. Once the first shot was fired, the Battle of Lexington and Concord began. This also meant that the Revolutionary War began. It was unclear which side fired the first shot. Historians were able to use this to their advantage. They had the ability to portray an image of the large British Army ganging up on but “being defeated by a small defiant army” (Where Did the Shot Heard Round the World Happen?). Both sides claimed the other had fired the first shot, only adding to the already evident tension. Meanwhile, a separate group of British soldiers reached the destination at which they were told they would find the stockpiles of ammunition.
