Once upon a time there was a kid named Alfred. Alfred was in the 3rd grade and he loved playing on the schools playground at lunch. Alfred was kind of an awkward fella and he had no friends. The kids made fun of him every single day.

One time Alfred was playing on the playground enjoying himself when a group of bully’s came up to him and started making fun of him because playing on the playground was lame. So Alfred just ignored them and kept playing on the playground. Alfred decided he wanted to do the monkey bars to show the bully’s he was cool. So he started doing the monkey bars and when he got to the middle he got nervous that he was gonna slip and fall. After the teacher was done laughing she told the bully’s to go away and she told Alfred to just let go of the monkey bars and fall down because she didn’t want to touch a kid who peed in his pants. So Alfred trusting his teacher let go of the monkey bars and fell down and broke his leg. The teacher couldn’t hold back and started laughing so hard she was crying. Alfred started crying because he had a broken leg, he had peed his pants, the teacher was laughing and he had been getting bullied. When the teacher realized Alfred was crying she stopped laughing and told Alfred it was going to be ok. The teacher knew she had to get Alfred inside the school so they could get him to the hospital but she didn’t want to touch him because he had peed his pants. So the teacher made Alfred drag himself all the way inside the school and to the main office where he could call his mom to come get him. As soon as Alfred made it to the main office he started crying even harder because he had brought even more damage upon his broken leg that the bone had pierced the skin and was sticking out. Alfred called his mom in from the kitchen and when she came in to the living room where he had been asleep he looked at her and said “you don’t even do yoga!” and she said “honey I know I just didn’t wan’t you to ruin my seats with your pee” and Alfred was so angry with his mom that he peed on the couch right in front of her. Now this couch was a 15,000 dollar couch that he had just peed on. Alfred’s mom was so angry that she got in her car and drove off. When Alfred’s father got home and saw that he peed on the couch he figured Alfred couldn't make it to the toilet because of his leg so he just peed right there on the couch. So Alfred's father took Alfred and changed his pants and said son let’s go to Mcdonalds. So when they got to Mcdonalds they ordered the food and ate and Alfred was very sad because he couldn’t go play on the playground. All of the sudden the bully’s walked into Mcdonalds with their parents and when they saw Alfred they started making fun of him for peeing his pants and breaking his leg. The two stories are written completely unrelated to each other; however, both stories have vast similarities in the time and place in which they take place. Hemingway is a writer that is very methodical in his word choices. When reading these two stories a second time the reader finds considerable differences in the writing style the author uses in each story. To demonstrate, three sentences from each story will be compared and contrasted to show the differences in word usage, word connotation, and to find which story is written better. The initial pair of these sentences to be looked at are, “A fourth planed down, to run quick-legged and then waddle slowly toward the others,” from the short story “The Snows of Kilimanjaro,” and “On the far bank of the stream Macomber could see, above the trees, vultures circling and plummeting down,” from the story “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber.” The subsequent couple of sentences are “’You Bitch,’ he said,” from the “Snows of Kilimanjaro” and “’Why not let up on the bitchery just a little, Margot,’ Macomber said, cutting the eland steak and putting some mashed potato, gravy and carrot on the down-turned fork that tined through the piece of meat.” Finally, the third set of sentences are “She shot very well this good, rich bitch, this kindly destroyer of his talent,” from the story “Snows of Kilimanjaro” and “’That was a good shot,’ Wilson said,” from the story, “A Short Happy Life.”
