This is a story about series of of the mysterious murders which were done quite mysteriously in one of the pacific quiest and the most peaceful island in Great Britain in Combe Island. Commander Adam Dalgliesh is brought to investigate a murder which was done in the most popular and beautiful place in the Island, in The Lighthouse. Combe Island is an outpost place, where rich and powerful people were coming to relax and to run away from their problems. Famed novelist Nathan Oliver was one of those people. He had a unique opportunity to come to the Island whenever he wanted, because he was born in this place. To the Combe he arrives with his daughter Miranda and his copy-editor Dennis Tremlett, who actually has an affair about which Miranda’s father has no idea. When Oliver discovers that they are couple, he reacts with fury and tells them to leave the Island the next day. A lot of people in the island find Oliver very unwelcome and unpleasant guest. Writer is trying to push the manager of the Combe Island Trust Rupert Maycroft to make sure that he could live in a cottage where was living the oldest habitant of the island Emily Holcombe. She is the sole remaining member of a family that owned the island for many years. It was because he said that this cottage is more suitable for writer. The next day writer Nathan Oliver was found dead hanging from the topmost railings of the lighthouse. The pathologist, Dr. Edith Glenister, determines that Oliver was throttled to death before a rope was tied around his neck and his body thrown over the side of the lighthouse railing. ...ok written by Oliver in which a young girl is seduced by an older man. So it was mostly a motif for Dan to kill Oliver, because that book was written about his mother. As it comes later Kate and Smith finds out that Oliver was Dan Padget‘s father. He also killed Adrian Boyde because the priest knew Padgett wasn't telling the truth about his whereabouts the day Oliver was killed. It was too risky for Dan to keep Adrian alive because knowing his weakness for alcohol and his sense of honesty, he could not let him tell that he could be a murder. Before Kate and Francis can arrest Padgett, he takes a young staff member, Millie Tranter, hostage and threatens to throw her from the lighthouse. Kate bravely forces herself through a narrow window so she can unlock the lighthouse door. She and Benton climb to the top, confront Padgett, and Benton convinces him to surrender.
