Over the years since Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created the character Sherlock Holmes and wrote a collection of stories of the detective, there have been many television adaptations of his Sherlock Holmes stories. Currently in the 21st century there are two most commonly watched, a Sherlock, BBC version of Sherlock Holmes, and Elementary, US version of Sherlock Holmes. Most of whom have read the stories have read them when they were college students, but after reading the book they wonder which version is best to watch in hope that one is true to what they read. After watching BBC Sherlock and Elementary I noticed they are different in many ways based on adaptation, characters, Sherlock and Watson, and fidelity, but only one is true and best to watch for readers of the original.
One difference between the two shows is Sherlock’s deduction skills, Sherlock shows Sherlock’s deductions skills to the fullest extent, whereas Elementary does not. In Sherlock, the BBC adaptation, each episode closely resembles one of the original stories with a better explanation behind each one. Throughout the show while Sherlock is thinking or observing, words will pop up on the on the screen, to show what is going through his mind as he deducts his observation. This good for viewers because they are able to follow with what is going on, making it impossible to be lost. For example In A Study in Pink, while Sherlock is investigating the death of a woman in pink he observes every possible clue left behind and while this happens viewers read and see every clue on the screen that Sherlock sees that we can’t like the ring she was wearing was dirty from the outside but clean on the inside indicating that she has taken her ring off numerous...

Sherlock BBC version is best because it gives a better understanding of what’s going on by involving viewers by posting words on the screen that tell what is going on what Sherlock is thinking or when he is depicting little details they will see what he is eliminating as possibility’s. Based on also the characters the show doesn’t change Sherlock’s image or Watson gender and keeps it original as Conan Doyle have envisioned them to be. There is a reason that Conan Doyle decided to choose Watson to be a male because he wanted Sherlock and Watson to both be crime solving partners and friends not to have a thing for each other like Elementary intended to do. Sherlock BBC is also best because it has many episode that stick to the original stories as mentioned for example A Study in Scarlet and A scandal in Bohemia as many others.
Bow, this is because it is packed with suspense and tension throughout. It shows drama and suspense in different places which is why I enjoy it. Crime fiction has been developed over the years with such characters as Poirot. But all the characters have been portrayed similarly to Sherlock and Holmes. Crime fiction is so popular because it helps us become more involved and able to interact with the story.

I chose to rewrite chapter one of The Hound of the Baskervilles from Sherlock Holmes’s point of view for many reasons. I thought it would be interesting to read a Holmes novel form Sherlock’s view point, so getting to write it myself somewhat provided me with that opportunity. Although it was not Doyle that did the writing, I feel as though I got better in touch with Sherlock Holmes as I was doing the rewrite. Having to try and think like Sherlock to write the story from his view, made me see the story in a new aspect. I think it would be extremely interesting to have an entire novel from Sherlock’s viewpoint rather than Watson’s.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: A Scandal in Bohemia, demonstrates how a specific character can be used to expand upon the complexity of the story’s main character. Specifically in the case of Irene Adler, Conan Doyle does not go into much detail about her, as much as he uses her as a contrast to Holmes. Adler’s presence in the story is the antagonist, but seems much more than that to Holmes’. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s use of Adler seems to be very unique and creative compared to some of his other works, though after her appearance, Conan Doyle’s works with Sherlock all come to a similar structure, that Sherlock seems to come to adore the villains, more so the villains intellect, and put up with the people that hire him.
