So it all started a month ago. I was sitting on my couch reading a book, when somebody knocked on the door. I hoped it was a pizza-delivery guy with my hours ago ordered pizza. When I looked outside there was nobody there. I immediately forgot about the suspicious knocking and went back to reading one of the sequels of Harry Potter. I hadn’t been reading a book for 5 minutes when somebody knocked on my door again. This time I didn’t even want to get up again, but I did, still hopelessly thinking of my pizza. I opened the door and there was nobody there again. So I decided to take a little walk to see who is knocking at my door and then running away. I put on my low heel boots and a blue summer jacket. It was about ten o’clock on a summer night so it wasn’t that cold but it was still chilly. I lived near a forest so I thought whoever was messing with me probably ran into the forest.     In Shadow of a Doubt, Hitchcock utilizes and stretches the ambiguous line between comedy and suspense by utilizing smaller characters in the film to keep the story line moving, and to help break sequence or rhythm of what the audience had been perceiving at the time. Many of the minor characters were used as “fillers”, such as the waitress in the bar when Uncle Charlie and Charlie are sitting in the bar, and makes the comment “I would die for a ring like this”; or the quiet, gentle neighbor Herb who is fascinated with the process of homicide and murder. It brings to the audience an immediate comic relief, but similar to all of Hitchcock, leaves an unsettling feeling of fear and suspense with the viewer. Shadow of a Doubt is a film that hits very close to home for me, primarily because of the small town feel very similar to Orono that I have grown to know so well. There is a brutal irony that lurks through the film, especially during the time period that the film was made. The picturesque stereotype of small town life in the 40’s is brutally torn apart by Hitchcock wit and creative ingénue, putting the viewer in an uncomfortable mind stretch of reality.

But after staying there for some time, she can't help but think of her husband and their children. What would happen to them? After doing a lot of thinking, she finally decides to go back home. In the end, Ramani has finally stopped seeing Shanta Bai, the other woman, and I guess you could say it's a happy ending. It's now up to you to go and guess the rest. Savitri is very much real. She is basically quite like most people. They treat problems like that. They find ways to escape it. Like booze, drugs, suicide, etc. In Servitor¡¯s case, she stays in the dark room, and finally, leaves her family. As I was reading "The Dark Room¡±, I felt compassion towards Savitri. I can clearly see that she was a confused woman. It was depicted through the first part of the story wherein her son was ill and she told Babu, her son, not to go to school that day. But Ramani intruded upon them and said that Babu has to go to school and that his illness is merely a headache. Savitri didn't know what to do then. She was concerned for Babu¡¯s health, but at the same time, she didn't want to argue with Ramani. In the end, Babu had gone off to school. As for Ramani, I felt like shouting at him while reading the novel because of his bullying.
