Sexism and Rape Culture

When looking at rape in today’s society, we have to look at sexism. “There is an average of 237,868 victims (age 12 or older) of rape and sexual assault each year.” (RAINN) If you break those numbers down that means a sexual assault happens every two minutes in America. When it comes to rape, victims are almost helpless to defend themselves. 60% of sexual assaults go unreported and 97% of rapist will never spend a day in jail. (RAINN) So what exactly is a person to do if we don’t hold attackers accountable for their crimes?

Rape culture became known during the second wave of feminism that happened in the 1970’s. It specifically is referring to rape and sexual assault in the culture of a society and how we often excuse and tolerate rape in society. We often blame victims for the assault or don’t take their accusations seriously. If only 3% of rapist are held accountable for their actions, that means we are turning a blind eye to what is really happening in cases of sexual assault.
